Why are people so determined for me to pull out in front of them?

I was driving today and it's a usual road. It reaches a road where visability is low and there is a bride. I always stop and have a good look before putting out. There are traffic lights in the distance and a in front of a hatched "keep clear" sign.

On the opposite side of the road lots of cars will stop and let me out - even when the road is empty..

I just don't get it.

Why.

I just don't know why someone would see a car and stop.

I agree with you, @smelliecat . It is really annoying when drivers 'let you out' when there are no cars behind them. Its especially annoying if they simply slow down a minimal amount and expect you to dart through quickly.

It just creates a new set of road safety calculations, displacing the calculations you were already making about your planned and problem-free manoeuvre.
And on top of the new calculations you also have the etiquette issues on your mind - the need to thank them while simultaneously being pissed off with them.

All minor concerns and calculations, but totally unnecessary and distracting ones .

ALSO, these numpties have clearly not checked their rear mirrors before slowing down - otherwise they would have realised how pointless their self-indulgent chivalry was. And that's dangerous. A couple of months ago, a driver slowed down really abruptly to 'let' me make a right-turn in front of her. A lorry was close behind her. It had to brake very sharply and the lorry driver was beeping and furious with her.

There was me, a vulnerable cyclist in a mid-road position, with a near-crash in front of me just because of her misplaced and badly executed generosity.

I’d also stop to look at a bride in the street. Is she always there?

It's getting to the point where incompetent drivers don't realize you don't let people pull out in front of you

On a serious note, being annoyed that other people don’t go about their way in a completely perfect way, a way that’s pleasing to everyone around, never doing one thing wrong, is really is something that only exists in MNland. IRL nobody gets so clenched about somebody <gasp> letting them out of a street.

No really, I don’t know a single person IRL who gets so easily wound up. If anyone moaned about this IRL I’d think “WTF”. But people come on MN to complain about people letting them out, not looking where they were going when walking for 0.2 seconds, not holding the door open, brushing their arm because they were close etc. Surely these intersections of other people are a part of living as a human in public and we just have to put up with it and accept we all dot hi ba to piss people off

Mate, who is saying I'm wound up. Only you are wound up

Yeh sure starting a thread on MN and saying just don't get it. Why. I just don't know why someone would see a car and stop.

sounds like someone totally fine with the situation 🤣

But seeing as you asked: they’re decent people. They’re trying to do you a favour, probably knowing how annoying it is to be waiting to be able to come out a road. They’re not doing it to upset you or piss you off. Nothing sinister. Just decency (yes some people have decency)

FMLGFastMovingLuxuryGoods · 05/02/2026 08:59

I wasn’t just referring to you BTW OP it everyone who is rather amusingly annoyed by other people’s courtesy

scrimblescramble · 05/02/2026 09:04

Worse.

Someone gave way to her on the road.

Fulmine · 05/02/2026 09:08

smelliecat · 04/02/2026 23:16

Correct. Why should I risk road safety by pulling out in front or them? On an empty road

How are you risking road safety if there is only one car around and it has stopped to let you out?

FMLGFastMovingLuxuryGoods · 05/02/2026 09:10

Fulmine · 05/02/2026 09:08

Yes exactly.

OP herself is grumbling about it being en empty road, so where the risk?

Also - you don’t HAVE to do as they say OP. You’re entitled to take your own time.

I do. I'm usually eye rolling and calling them a thick idiot from my car and watching them get more and more annoyed before they drive off.

60watt · 05/02/2026 09:19

OP your first post is almost impossible to understand because of all the typos. And your stroppy further posts tell a story of their own.

YABU.

Why though?

Why does this get to you?

Do you think they’re trying to piss you off?

brightbevs · 05/02/2026 09:30

Oh this is a fun guessing game of what the fuck OP is actually talking about!

Visibility is low and there is a “bride” - but not an actual bride, nor a bridge. Hmm. Is it a bridleway? Probably not if you live in a city. Anyone else able to decode this?

helpfulperson · 05/02/2026 09:48

Willowkins · 05/02/2026 01:14

I'm sorry I'm going to need a diagram

I can't visualise the set up eithet.

Btrsun10 · 05/02/2026 10:28

I agree OP.
My daughter's driving instructor drilled it in to her to ignore people being "polite". It causes accidents and often forces the driver to rely on the polite persons cues. The driver can feel under pressure as they don't want to seem rude.
As others have said, if you pull out into someone else's path and there is an accident, you will be liable.
Why cant people just follow the rules of the road?

Quite

I assumed it was a narrow bridge (with the low visibility) and people were letting her across first rather than two people trying to squeeze past

But she's disagreed with that

And won't bother to explain

fromthegecko · 05/02/2026 11:21

I always just impatiently wave them on their way, for the many reasons mentioned by PPs.

But the fact that it happens frequently suggests there might be something about this particular road layout that prompts it. Any chance of a diagram?

That’s all well and good for an inexperienced learner who needs to pass their test, but you’ll never get anywhere if you refuse every time someone lets you out..

If another car comes to a dead stop and let’s you out, there is just no way that that it’s dangerous unless you’re not a competent/confident driver.

Even flashing, although not Highway Code Approved, is a clear indication that a driver is expecting and allowing you to cross their path. Just drive with caution.

Can someone please just clarify wtf a ‘bride’ is? I thought it was some kind of countryside term but OP lives in a city? I’m so confused 😂👰🏻‍♀️

Apparently it’s not a bridge so maybe the OP really does mean bride and that’s why she stops to look?

I shall remain silent on why she feels the need to put out. TMI really OP.

Mumsnet has always been pretty rude. I used to be on here a lot when mine were tiny (13 years ago) and it was very robust.

Yeah old school robust I can deal with. I've been here since it was all fields. Its just quite nasty of late but the world is too so I guess what do I expect?
