Sharing bath water

Just that really.
For what it is worth we have a massive roll top bath which takes 15 minutes to fill
I usually offer out to rest of family when I am done.
is that okay or grim?

Absolutely. Anyone around with a social conscience in drought years - like, I think, '76 - had to drop their squeamishness and egocentricity and think of the social necessity of using far less water, which (back in those pre-privatisation days) everyone paid for equally. Using far less included sharing it. With a life-threatening climate crisis upon us, we've got no choice if we want this blue planet to survive but to use far less of its non-renewable resources. So yes bath(water)-sharing has to be normalised again - just like we have with reusing plastic bags, composting food waste, driving only when essential, etc, in the name of sustainability. Our kids know this only too well - and won't forgive us if we leave them yet more of an environmental nightmare to resolve, even as the climate clock ticks louder.

There are hygienic ways to do it though. Sharing much water is done out of upbringing and habit, nothing else.

In Africa (at least where I'm from) where water is actually scarce and many people don’t have running showers, you prepare a bucket of warm water and pour it over you. It is actually highly efficient. People don’t share bathwater

But this is MN, so it’s probably seen as a marker of being middle class (and so superior) to share used bathwater. See also shoes on inside; dogs licking plates and bathing infrequently.

Yes I know what you mean

i prefer to shower in mornings but will get in bath after dh in evening

Magsbd · 05/02/2026 19:05

Disgusting. 🤮

FasterMichelin · 05/02/2026 19:06

Gross.

Tableforjoan · 05/02/2026 19:08

It’s not about it germs as such as in the feeling of being clean.

I wash to get clean so firstly for me I shower not bathe as showering washes away dirt while bathing sits in the dirt.

So to say hop in the bath after my dh would be adding his dirt to mine. Definitely not getting clean.

If I showered after it defeats the point of saving the water as a point at all, as I should just shower to start with and save the time and water.

If you bathe for pleasure then again the idea of sitting in someone else’s used water definitely does not appeal.

GreenChameleon · 05/02/2026 19:08

I get in after the DCs. Wouldn't get in after anyone else, not even my DH!

Grim.

NorthXNorthWest · 05/02/2026 19:11

3rd party nasties: fecal matter, dead skill, sweat, athletes foot for starters

Do you share towels too? 👀😱

CollieModdle · 05/02/2026 19:11

Yuk.

But I don’t like baths anyway, and always shower.

I consider big deep baths environmentally non-ideal so if you must do this, better run one bath shared than two, I suppose.

99pwithaflake · 05/02/2026 19:12

Eurgh, I think it's disgusting to sit in someone else's filthy water. How can you get clean? 😩

TittyGajillions · 05/02/2026 19:15

Proccy · 04/02/2026 21:41

Never thanks. Very grim. My dp told me when they'd had a particularly bad fallout with their ex they pissed in the water, then their unknowing ex partner got in and washed their hair etc. So no, I certainly wouldn't 😁

And you're happy to be with someone who did that? That's abusive and disgusting 🤢

Morepositivemum · 05/02/2026 19:17

Personally think it’s grim but then baths and paddling pools would be the things I personally think should be banned because of wasting water so I kind of feel like I should just leave!!

Bubbles90 · 05/02/2026 19:23

Nothing grim about this. A lot of families do this. Perfect fine unless you are particularly dirty in which case you wouldn't offer your bathwater anyway.

tedibear · 05/02/2026 19:36

I’m just about to get out and DD8 wants to go in. I’ve literally just washed my hair and body. No shaving or anything, it’s absolutely fine. If the water ever looks a bit grubby I’ll tip it out and refill.

When I was growing up it was the norm as once they hot water had been used it would take hours for it to heat back up again (immersion).

Lollipop81 · 05/02/2026 19:46

Growing up in the 80’s our family did it, I wouldn’t dream of doing it now personally.

Hankunamatata · 05/02/2026 19:49

Depends

Myself and dh often share a bath as these so long to fill but we have showers every morning and don't have mucky jobs. If waters dirty nope

TheActualQueen · 05/02/2026 20:02

Currently lounging in DHs bath water right now 🤣
I wouldn’t use anyone’s bathwater if they were sick BTW.
But a healthy husband - meh?!

houseofisms · 05/02/2026 20:55

We do that… adult first then offer to the kids. They spend hours in the bath

S4uk · 05/02/2026 21:02

Yup!
it still happens here - mum first (likes it hottest) then dad then me!
yes, I am of a certain age, but still live at home.
often my 2 children will get in with mum…

Newyearawaits · 05/02/2026 21:05

Seems fine to me

Of course it’s grim! You’re sitting in a tub full of dirty water and someone else’s dead skin cells and bodily excretions 🤮

Gribouille · 05/02/2026 21:46

Ruined by Saltburn...

Glitchymn1 · 05/02/2026 21:50

DH has gone in after me, but I rarely bother. I’d rather shower. He will eat after me, use my cup, glass, fork, towel, nothing is safe. 😬I don’t like using anything after someone else, even DD.
