Sharing bath water

Just that really.
For what it is worth we have a massive roll top bath which takes 15 minutes to fill
I usually offer out to rest of family when I am done.
is that okay or grim?

Haven't had a bath in getting on for 35 years because I can't stand sitting in my own effluent. The thought of climbing into someone else's used water is stomach-churning. 😐

And the rest of us wipe after the loo 😂

That’s nearly as bad as boogies on the steering wheel 🛞

😂😂

Its not at all grim! Its not like someone's shat in the bath before you! Yes I pop in the bath for 5 mins and DS has it after. First user doesn't wash hair, shave etc. Its totally fine and an efficient use of water.

Why is washing head hair in the water a no go for shared water but washing genitals and arsecrack before someone else uses the water is ok? As I said in my last post I don’t think people who share water are grim but my childhood experience of fishing out pubes makes me feel sick and I couldn’t do it now.

ChocolateCinderToffee · 04/02/2026 21:55

My mother used to make me bath in my brother's water and I knew he'd peed in it.

Bloody grim.

I shower, these days.

Heyhoherewego23 · 04/02/2026 22:05

I’m genuinely really shocked about the severe reaction to this. I had no idea I was so grim! We all wash frequently and my children are always clean.

I had a couple of weeks with a shower not working, was I supposed to run 5 hot baths before 8.30am? It wouldn’t heat up quick enough!

The repulsion about sitting in your own skin cells I find really bizarre! It’s water, you’re washing, you come out clean. To be fair I’m not a wallower, I get in, wash, get out. You do realise you give your child a hug, their skin cells are rubbing off on you? When your child is sick, do you leave them to it in case they get anything gross on you?

I would never make my children get in grey lukewarm bath water but that really has never been the case! Water is not rationed at all anyone can run themselves a hot bath or shower at anytime, but I can’t imagine needing a quick wash and draining a bath just to refill.

It’s not the skin cells that would bother me but the fact someone has washed their arsehole in that water puts me off a bit to be honest.

I think if you’re sitting in your own ‘effluent’ you’re doing baths wrong. That usually refers waste product going into water or a lake/stream going into larger water. Are you using the bath as a toilet?

Thoseslippers · 04/02/2026 22:30

My DH sometimes uses my bathwater if I haven't washed my hair in it abd we are in a hurry.
If I've washed my hair the water is just too dirty to use.
I dont let the kids share because they all get filthy
I wouldn't use my DHs bathwater I just think its a bit ick
But as I said he uses mine coz he's from a family where he grew up doing that so doesn't think its ick. Tbf I often bathe twice a day so my bathwater isn't going to be that dirty unless I wash my hair in it

It makes the water really grim.
Genitals are a small part of you in a large amount of water.
If you've got long hair that's a much larger part and it also holds onto dirt and grime.
You can tell its dirtier because if I get out of the bath after not washing my hair the water is clear and looks clean. If I wash my hair the water looks murky.
Its also the shampoo of course.. who wants to bathe in slimy shampoo residue?

My mum would have grown up in a household where a bath was a metal one filled up with water heated on the stove (she remembered moving to a house with a proper bath and indoor toilet in her childhood) Our childhood home (1980s) had hot water from an immersion heater, so you could 'run out' of hot water, and I remember there was a lot of stress about 'putting the immersion on', I assume it was expensive, or felt expensive (single parent low income household)

Not worrying about hot water or heating is definitely a luxury I appreciate as an adult and don't take for granted.

Our immersion heater had a switch but we were rarely allowed to use it. Both our heating and water were powered primarily by the coal fire so only working for a few hours in the evening. We would share bath water during to this. Not something I’d ever do now since I can just turn on the tap. Feel like it’s a bit like sharing underwear 😬

ploddyy · 04/02/2026 22:34

I don’t want to soak myself in someone else’s leftover sweat and dirt. It turns my stomach. We used to do this when I was a kid and I vowed never to subject my own to it.

Endofyear · 04/02/2026 22:38

DH and I share bath water - but I always go first! When the kids were small, I used to stick the youngest 3 in together, they could play for ages in there 😂 and it was easier for me to get them all bathed in one go!

OnMidnightsLikeThis · 04/02/2026 22:43

How dirty is everyone’s hair ffs?!

largeprintagathachristie · 04/02/2026 22:44

“Who’s having first bath? was something I often heard in the evenings in my family (70s and 80s childhood) - I don’t think there would have been enough hot water if we hadn’t shared baths.

I freaked out my teen SDC - used to their own bottles of shower gel - by sharing that my whole family of five washed with the same cake of soap. That was normal, right?

Datgal · 04/02/2026 22:45

Me and my partner do 😁. Me first mainly cos I'm a quick dipper and my partner is a lounger.

Sparrow7 · 04/02/2026 22:46

Normal in our house

GreenEyesIsBack · 04/02/2026 22:47

Oh god just no, absolutely gross.

Minjou · 04/02/2026 22:48

TheActualQueen · 04/02/2026 20:52

The germ phobes make me laugh. Have you never had sex with your partner?

I know right? "I couldn't possibly ever get in bath water my partner was in"....wtf? Don't you get their hair and skin and fluids on you at other times, and much more directly?
. people are so fucking weird.

But why share the same water they’ve washed their arsehole in when you don’t have to? It’s different from sex.

Yes its much cleaner. Have you any idea how much water there is to dilute any bum germs?

Wishthingswerenouting · 04/02/2026 23:01

IWantToHibernate · 04/02/2026 20:57

But this isn’t about sharing bath water with random members of the public. No one would want to do that. Unless your partner is ‘truly filthy’ what is so bad about it? Are you also against sharing a bed? What about kissing, you are literally exchanging germs with another person. You could argue that is dirtier than sharing bath water.

Sharing a bed is not the same as trying to clean myself in the back swill of their cleaning of themselves. Hair, skin, soap scum, and sweat soup. That I’m then putting all over my body and adding to it. It’s not about germs it’s about dirt.

ByRealPoet · 04/02/2026 23:03

This is just nasty. The hell.

My hair isnt dirty but the combo of shampoo, conditioner and loose strands of hair is pretty unappealing if you were getting in afterwards.
I usually wash my hair in the shower, If ive just had a quick bath, (no hairwash) DH is fine to use the bath water after

Cola32 · 04/02/2026 23:09

Having a bath together isn’t so bad, but offering your stale, tepid bath water (with floaties, dirt and dead cells) to the next person is disgusting. Do people seriously do this or am I misunderstanding? Why even bother bathing, you’ll be dirtier than before you got in.
