Why is what’s happening in Leicester secret?

GrandmaMazur · 04/02/2026 10:59

I just saw a news alert about a very serious incident that happened last night in Leicester and the area is cordoned off with a heavy police presence. But there are no details available.

I don’t remember seeing a news story like this before where nothing about the actual incident is reported. Does this happen regularly and I’ve not noticed or is this quite unusual?

I hope it’s nothing too awful.

I stated before, it was in the news that it was over a parking dispute.

You can believe what you want. I was parked in the same parking lot for most of the day where it occurred and was back and forth to the car. Many empty car spaces as there always is whenever I go.

Maybe the assailant was someone like the OP who started a fight with another driver in am empty parking lot earlier this week. She says there were plenty free spaces, so took offense with another driver parking near her dog.

Once again, this is bbc.co.uk, the News section and they posted at 7.15 this morning with the headline Murder arrest after student stabbed near campus. This article has been added to all day.
If you don't believe me, it's there to look at, still with that time on it. What's your BBC news source?

This article has been added to all day.

I think you answered your own question there!

We are all looking at the live updates, which show when information was added. I posted screenshots upthread of the updates just before and after the information was released about the stabbing.

Live updates over, but still up for now:

De Montfort University student stabbed to death in Leicester with 18-year-old arrested on suspicion of murder

The man is in police custody with a large cordon in place near the campus of De Montfort University.

@Floatlikeafeather2

This is what I read, it shows the live feed & different updates.

There is a clue here!

You clearly haven't read the other thread currently running where the OP managed to have an altercation in an otherwise empty car park 😂

All this shouting racism, after years of islamic terrorist attacks, Southport, Nottingham, Rhiannon White... is it any wonder people jump to conclusions, plus when that idiot drove into the crowd in Liverpool last year the fact he was white was reported immediately, its almost as if the powers that be are pushing for ethno nationalism!

Nor did mine.

Go and have a look, instead of arguing. BBC reported the incident as a stabbing at 7.15 this morning. It can't be helped if you didn't see it, but it was there. Have a look.

I wish they wouldn't say "don't speculate"

Why? They don't mean you shouldn't think about it, they say it to stop empty-heads spreading gossip and false information on social media where it can cause real life issues.

You can’t look now as they’ve been updating the page since the first reports and since more information came to light. Someone else posted screenshots above showing what was available on the BBC at different times. The headline gets updated along with the news story.

They do mean you shouldn't think about it. Nothing is a bigger trigger for speculation than telling people not to speculate. It doesn't stop speculation, it fuels it.

No, it really is no wonder that people jump to conclusions when you take into account a) the fact that many people are horribly racist and b) that many are also incredibly stupid.

It is of course intensely annoying to the rest of us that we should be reminded about the stupidity and racism of our fellow citizens every time any kind of crime is committed anywhere, as if white people never ever commit crimes whatsoever, but we should of course be used to the kneejerk reactions by now.

thebrollachan · 04/02/2026 17:24

I think there's an important lesson here, which is that anyone who wants to debate how an incident was reported (especially the timing) needs to post screenshots not links. Because there's always one idiot who doesn't understand how news web pages work.

They didn’t though, just google or look at the BBC news twitter feed rather than arguing!

My first thought too. BBC and police working out how to spin it. I expect he’ll turn out to be ‘Welsh’ like the guy from Stockport.

His ethnicity was reported immediately because there was live video of him committing the offense all over social media. And it still didn't stop false rumours of a 'muslim terror attack'. The media reported on what they saw in the videos.

Police policy on disclosing the nationality and ethnicity of a suspect/offender was updated last August precisely because of situations like Southport. The current guidance allows them to disclose it where..."there is policing purpose, a risk to public safety, misinformation, and significant social media unrest."

You think the police are telling you not to think about something? How does that work? And how would someone simply thinking about it impact anything?

Nothing is a bigger trigger for speculation than telling people not to speculate. It doesn't stop speculation, it fuels it.

Do you think the police don't know that?

He was Welsh. And Christian. What's your point?

KellySeveride · 04/02/2026 17:36

I imagine they’ve been quiet on the details because of the assailant is anything other than white the likes of Tommy Robinson et al and all the racist twats will be trying to march to “take are country back”.

So the police know it fuels speculation but they do it anyway? Why?

I read several. I also googled to see if it was being reported elsewhere and the same headline was shown for several news outlets, including the BBC. (I don’t generally use the BBC as my main news source)
