Taking the Dog on Holiday Without Telling the Caravan Site… Am I Mad?!

1000 replies

oceanmountain · 02/02/2026 15:11

So I’m going away in a couple of weeks and had a dog sitter all sorted… and now they’ve just cancelled because of a family emergency.

I’ve tried everywhere and can’t find anyone else to take the dog on such short notice, and I really don’t want to cancel the trip and upset the kids. So I was thinking of just taking the dog with me and not telling the caravan site.

Has anyone ever done this? My dog’s tiny and doesn’t shed, so I honestly don’t know how they’d even notice.

My friend said I shouldn't do it but I cant see any other option?

Most sites I have stayed on also have a charge for dogs to stay, and that's with taking/using your own caravan/motorhome.

Does this company charge for dogs?

There would be no children in my van with allergies and I will clean before I go? and surely the site cleans the caravans too... no hair will be left as she's a non shedding breed

no.

There is zero chance that you will clean it enough for someone like me who is hugely allergic won't get a reaction.

Pay for kennels or disappoint your kids.

Most holiday accommodation even if it advertised as pet friendly, doesn’t allow people to leave their pets there unsupervised whilst they go out. So that would be a concern for me as to whether your dog is OK being left alone in a strange place.

I guess logically that if they are, then they may be OK with Kennels, and it’s probably best to explore this option or an alternative pet sitting service before you go down the route of sneaking them in to the caravan.

This is also true. You can't just leave it there while you go out for the evening.

Sunshineismyfavourite · 02/02/2026 16:22

It is wrong to say that some dogs do not shed. They do. No dog is 100% hypoallergenic. It is selfish of you to sneak your dog into a caravan that is allocated to people who do not want or cannot, due to allergies, sleep and live in a space where a dog has been living.

Sleeping in a bed or sitting on a sofa for several hours/days and being exposed to allergens from a dog's saliva and skin (never mind hair) is totally different to walking past someone taking their dog for a walk. No comparison.

Don't be selfish. Sort out an alternative for your dog. Read the other thread trending at the moment about someone who has severe allergies to dogs and pets.

well my car would be right next to the caravan?... Id just walk it out and put it in.... Iv never seen a member of staff near my van before....🤔

You’re not the brightest bulb in chandelier, are you @oceanmountain ?

crazycatladie · 02/02/2026 16:24

I’d be worried if the next people in were allergic to dogs or the cleaners, if they were it would be awful for them.

Hhhwgroadk · 02/02/2026 16:24

We used to live in a holiday area and there was a really good family owned kennel and cattery nearby. I have seen dogs not want to leave this particular kennel with their owners. We used to put our cat in there as well and she would demand a treat every afternoon at a certain time. She didn't get one at the same time at home!

Heronwatcher · 02/02/2026 16:24

princesspadam · 02/02/2026 16:01

I told them mine was a support dog, no problem, no charge
she’s hypo allergenic anyway, doesn’t shed

the only issue was no gate on the decking but we managed with a lead

Christ we’ve found someone with a more dubious moral compass than the OP!

I can’t believe you’d lie about being disabled- and appear to be proud of it. It’s people like you who make lives of those with genuine disabilities more difficult and contribute to the people who think that all
disabled people are workshy and/ or taking the piss with reasonable adjustments. You really should take a look at yourself.

sandyhappypeople · 02/02/2026 16:24

Genuine question, but why weren't you taking the dog anyway (in dog friendly accommodation)?

I've got dogs, and they come away with us, but would never take them to accommodation that wasn't dog friendly because of people with allergies.

Brefugee · 02/02/2026 16:24

oceanmountain · 02/02/2026 15:54

Dogs are everywhere in holiday parks, you cant stop a person taking their dog for a walk near you van. People walk their dogs around the whole site.

you seriously cannot be as thick and as entitled as you come across here.

The ENTIRE point is that you are taking a dog into a dog free caravan.
Don't be that person

HisNotHes · 02/02/2026 16:25

Completely unreasonable. Unless you’ve experienced severe allergies to animals you have no idea about how miserable you could be making the holiday of the person who stays in that caravan after you.

Ewock · 02/02/2026 16:25

princesspadam · 02/02/2026 16:13

@Ewockdid you not read my post
shes A dog for people with allergies!

No dog is completely free of allergens, its just not how it works. They can produce less of the allergin but that can still cause huge problems for people with severe allergies.
You also said you told them she was a support dog, insinuating that was a lie. So I stand by what I said

Manxexile · 02/02/2026 16:25

oceanmountain · 02/02/2026 15:17

Dog is very small, thing toy breed and doesn't bark.

I would take it out with me in the day for a walk but would be left in the van for a hour or 2 in the evening while we see the entertainment on site/arcades for the kids.

Fuck

It isn't even a proper dog.

It's some inbred victim and fashion accessory.

"toy" indeed.

AcrossthePond55 · 02/02/2026 16:25

@oceanmountain

It's not usually the hair that causes allergic reactions, it's the dander. And all dogs have dander. Just like all dogs shed, some just not as much as others or have curly hair that 'traps' the shed (like poodles). If you brush a 'non allergen' dog, you will get loose hair, and dander.

A normal 'clean' doesn't do it for allergies. Most places use some kind of HEPA machine that cleans the air. Normally a hotel will run one for 24 hours to purify the air. You planning on buying one and lugging in with you and running it 24/7? No? Then don't bring your dog.

I have a dog I love dearly. But I'd never take him with me and stay in a 'no pets' lodging. If you want to be sure your pet is always welcome and doesn't disrupt others, buy an RV or a caravan.

Doseofreality · 02/02/2026 16:27

Entitled cheeky fucker behaviour. I’m with your friend.

I thought the same?! If she's so tiny and easy to look after why on earth would you pay a dog sitter when there is / was dog friendly accommodation available?

sesquipedalian · 02/02/2026 16:28

You are being V unreasonable (and you know it) but clearly you won’t listen to anyone on here, because you and your dog are so special that rules that apply to everyone else don’t apply to you. You need to take a long hard look at yourself, and consider how your dog can ruin someone else’s holiday just because you couldn’t make provision for it. There is more than one dog sitter on the planet, and various kennels. You need to find a solution that doesn’t involve you and DDog breaking the rules of the caravan park (and setting a terrible example to your DC).

ThejoyofNC · 02/02/2026 16:30

Well you are clearly going to do it anyway but I hope you get caught.

ShakyFridge · 02/02/2026 16:30

oceanmountain · 02/02/2026 15:36

Dogs never been in kennels so not an option.

First time for everything!

I'd be pretty annoyed if I rented the caravan after you as my FIL, DH and son are all very very allergic to pet dander.

EleanorReally · 02/02/2026 16:32

why dont you leave her in the car then?

Snaletrale · 02/02/2026 16:33

if it’s a privately owned caravan that’s rented out, then neighbours might well know the owner and let them know. If it’s a dog free section, then management may be alerted. Staff may well notice regardless of the above.

I’ve watched people begging escorted out of a neighbouring holiday cottage for breaking the rules. It happens.

Sunshineismyfavourite · 02/02/2026 16:34

princesspadam · 02/02/2026 16:01

All dogs shed skin and saliva which some people have severe allergies to. Anyway, hypoallergenic means low risk not no risk. It's like saying a cake you've made is gluten reduced - might be OK for some people but not if you're coeliac.

Snaletrale · 02/02/2026 16:35

And if you leave it alone when you are away, stress may make it damage stuff, or it may be barking for all that time - even if it doesn’t normally.

Tigerbalmshark · 02/02/2026 16:35

NinePoppadomsAndASaagAloo · 02/02/2026 16:08

Why do some people not take other peoples allergies seriously?! Allergic reactions can potentially kill people.

If your child had a peanut allergy would you care if the restaurant serving them said “oh it’s only got a tiny bit of peanut in it, it’ll be no trouble!”

I think OP is one of those people who opens a packet of dry roast nuts on a flight, just after the announcement that there is somebody with a life-threatening peanut allergy on board. After all, why not? Fuck everyone else, if they end up in hospital she doesn’t care as long as she saves money on kennel fees.
