Taking the Dog on Holiday Without Telling the Caravan Site… Am I Mad?!

1000 replies

oceanmountain · 02/02/2026 15:11

So I’m going away in a couple of weeks and had a dog sitter all sorted… and now they’ve just cancelled because of a family emergency.

I’ve tried everywhere and can’t find anyone else to take the dog on such short notice, and I really don’t want to cancel the trip and upset the kids. So I was thinking of just taking the dog with me and not telling the caravan site.

Has anyone ever done this? My dog’s tiny and doesn’t shed, so I honestly don’t know how they’d even notice.

My friend said I shouldn't do it but I cant see any other option?

Don’t take your dog. You will get caught and have to pay the fine. Look at a wider area for dog sitter or try trusted pet sitters and people come to you.

dogs smell to non dog owners and it would be noticed.

If it's a big site like Haven then dog friendly caravans are dotted all over the park so I doubt anyone would notice you shouldn't have one in the caravan. I stayed at Haven in May last year, booked a dog friendly caravan because I have 2 dogs and the actual van we were allocated had a sticker on the fridge saying this is a non-dog friendly caravan. So they probably do release a few caravans if they have over booked to dog owners. A small non shedding dog is unlikely to leave much smell, is probably a lot cleaner than most children and if it doesnt bark when you go out to entertainments wont be drawing attention to you.

I have had that with Haven too. The sticker on the fridge.
But we paid extra to have the dogs there, and did not dream of leaving them alone in the caravan.

howshouldibehave · 02/02/2026 21:12

If you can't find another dog sitter, friend or family member to have your dog, can't swap to a dog-friendly caravan or different dates, then you can't go.

Caravan parks usually have dog-friendly caravans all together in one section so it will be very obvious you shouldn't have one in your caravan.

If you do just decide to go regardless, that would be monumentally selfish and I hope they chuck you out.

Read what it says in the small print.

I don’t know what’s worse - @oceanmountain wanting to do this, or the fact that there are other poster who, I can only assume, have read the accounts of severe allergies caused by dog dander and dog fur, and have decided that the health of these people don’t matter, as long as the OP doesn’t get caught.

rainbowsandraspberrygin · 02/02/2026 21:16

Book into kennels. There’s always a first time - see if you can do a visit first.

Don’t take a dog to a non-dog caravan. Crazy selfish. Allergens stay. Dog smell stays. People will see you and hopefully report you.

grumpygrape · 02/02/2026 21:20

I really think we're all wasting our time here now, well hours ago, I don't think OP is coming back.

Don't know why but can't be arsed to try and find out.

Mouikey · 02/02/2026 21:21

I means years ago we used to take our hamster and not declare it!! I wouldn’t with our dog though, who is also a tiny toy breed, quiet nd doesn’t shed.

Dogs never been in kennels so not an option.

Of course it’s an option!

Namechangerage · 02/02/2026 21:23

If they advertise the caravan as no dogs. Then it’s not fair, there might be someone after you with allergies who has a ruined holiday…

DeanStockwell · 02/02/2026 21:25

princesspadam · 02/02/2026 16:01

I told them mine was a support dog, no problem, no charge
she’s hypo allergenic anyway, doesn’t shed

the only issue was no gate on the decking but we managed with a lead

Can i just clarify, you took your dog that is not a support dog into a non dog friendly place ?
You are even worse than @oceanmountain , not only did you take your dog into somewhere you shouldn't but you claim its a support dog too.
So you risk other people's lives , lie about your dogs abilities and con the company out of money ?
You are the type of person that gives all dog owners a bad name.

What do you mean?!

every dog that has ever been to kennels will have had a “first time”. Imagine if the owners all said “they haven’t been so they can’t go”.

What with this and the car park lady it has confirmed my view on certain types of dog owners 🤯

Well, there is not usually an option when you book about taking a hamster.

I was thinking the same thing. Car bashing car park lady wins the threads for me today.

Some dogs hate kennels. Mine did not eat at all and shredded her paws on he bars. She screamed the place down all week.
I never put her in kennels again.

It’s not about the smell or even really the hair but the fact that the shed skin cells (or in some cases saliva, even dried) can cause severe reactions if the following users are allergic and specifically booked a dog free caravan.

Musicalmistress · 02/02/2026 21:33

Notthehill · 02/02/2026 20:08

OP people are giving you a hard time, but I say go for it! No one will notice or care. Is it possible to bring a small crate with you, just in case you need it? I have a tiny dog and have gone to huge lengths and expense to have it looked after while I'm away, only to find that absolutely no one would have noticed or cared if I'd brought her.

The people coming after who have booked a no dog caravan for a reason may well care - my DB would end up hospitalised because people like you think it doesn’t matter!

Well her dog has never been so it might be absolutely fine, like most are. Not really relevant.

Try this Facebook site, it’s for homes and pet sitting and has many people who may be able to help you.

GilmoreGirly86 · 02/02/2026 21:41

As a parent of a child who has severe allergies, I would beg you not to do this. However, the fact that you even posted this in the first place and your replies defending doing so show that you are going to do it anyway. When you get caught and kicked off the site, you can explain to them how selfish their parent is that they thought the rules aren't important and don't apply to them.

Silvertulips · 02/02/2026 21:46

Look for a dog sitter near the caravan site or on the way - doesn’t have to be local to your home.

andthat · 02/02/2026 21:50

oceanmountain · 02/02/2026 15:17

Dog is very small, thing toy breed and doesn't bark.

I would take it out with me in the day for a walk but would be left in the van for a hour or 2 in the evening while we see the entertainment on site/arcades for the kids.

Don’t do this.

My brother has very severe asthma and pet hair causes him to become very ill.

You could hospitalise someone by doing this.

You didn’t book a pet caravan…it would be so wrong of you to sneak your pet into a non pet caravan…

stichguru · 02/02/2026 21:54

How much do you LOVE hurting people for no reaason?
IF the answer is NOT "It gives me enoourmous pleasure and I think it's really funny" you won't take your dog.

People with allergies can be allergic to 1 hair, 1 drip of urine, the smell of dog
Cleaners with allergies can be allergic to 1 hair, 1 drip of urine, the smell of dog
You can't always see every single hair a dog drops.
However careful you think you are being, you will only do this if you LIKE hurting people.

Screamingabdabz · 02/02/2026 21:57

Well this thread has put me off booking at Haven if ever I was going to! If they don’t give a shit about letting their ‘no-dog’ stickered caravans to dog owners (and charge extra just run the hoover a bit more), then that’s absolutely immoral and downright sickening for those with allergies.

Changingtimes81 · 02/02/2026 21:57

Tiswa · 02/02/2026 19:12

This just highlights the general issue with allergies in that people don’t get them, they (and I very much imagine you are one @liamharha) how dangerous things that th vast majority are fine with.

DD was nearly hospitalised from cats and wr have to monitor it very carefully (as do I) taking antihistamines if we know we are around animals and we aren’t even that bad anymore

and here there is an expectation that there is no dog hair because here is the thing @oceanmountain there is no such thing as a completely non shedding dog - everyone sheds (including is hair and skin) it is just levels

There is no such thing as a hypoallergenic dog either. My friend got a supposedly hypoallergenic dog(can't remember the breed but small white & really cute) I was all over it thinking wow a dog I can pet. I was fine at the time then on the way home my symptoms were exactly the same as usual around any dog. It was worse because it wasn't only my eyes. The dog was licking my hand & it was covered in hives. Sadly many dog owners have no time for people with dog allergies & act as if we hate them. Many people would love to be able to pet a dog without becoming ill or knocking back antihistamines if they know they're going to be around them. I've trained myself not to care much for dogs but only because of my allergy as many here will understand.

Ok but OP doesn’t know that. They will be in the UK so she can always cut the trip short if the dog hates it.
