Hi Ladies I want to find out what ladies are doing to make a comfortable income around their primary school children and still have time for family? Kindly advise?

I think 15 years out of the workplace is only one way to couch it - there was a great post yesterday where someone rewrote her SAHM role as a job and skills and it was really very good.

I too think 50k is going to be a lot though unless you have a serious specialisation. I did think of remote concierge jobs though - combination of admin and organisation, but again with a bit of a specialism you might struggle.

50k per year

After you spoke about admin I was going to suggest virtual PA but I doubt it would bring you in £50k.

50k per year

This cannot be a serious post 😂

Jellycatspyjamas · 02/02/2026 14:57

Part time work on £50k is going to be hard with no recent experience and an admin background. I’m around that part time with 30 years in my profession. Have you had a look at job adverts for the kind of job you’re training for? What are they offering because that’s your benchmark.

99pwithaflake · 02/02/2026 14:57

I think you're deluded if you think you can walk into a 50k per year, WFH role when you've not worked anywhere in well over a decade.

FrozenFebruary · 02/02/2026 14:58

Burningbud1981 · 02/02/2026 14:22

Not really. I work for an insurance company. We are hybrid. The majority of insurance companies in my sector are also hybrid. Some have gone fully back to the office.

Are you earning £50k for flexible part time hours?

SalmonOnFinnCrisp · 02/02/2026 15:01

Virtual PA is what springs to mind.
Youd maybe get close to 50k for full time but it sounds like you want a 9-3 job...

EmotionalSupportVest · 02/02/2026 15:03

Taking in ironing + Only Fans

Maybe combine the two?

Ionlymakejokestodistractmyself · 02/02/2026 15:06

I don't earn 50k for 30 hours and I've been in my profession for decades (admittedly am underpaid but still...). I could get paid more but I would lose the flexibility.

itsthetea · 02/02/2026 15:06

Strong data analytics skills that are in desperate short supply was my route but that isn’t for everyone

50k for part time term time work - I suspect there are very few ladies or gents in the country on that !

BlackCatDiscoClub · 02/02/2026 15:08

Could you go back to work full time for a period to develop your skils? If you have a good three years on your CV it will demonstrate your work ethic, and could give you a bit more leverage for finding more tailored work.

florence1234567 · 02/02/2026 15:10

I work in sales full-time from home (no cold calling), and make around 50000 to 60000 pounds a year.

BlackCatDiscoClub · 02/02/2026 15:11

Also, sometimes we have to compromise earningsnfor flexibility. My work is full time but amazingly flexible with two days wfh, but i earn much less than your 50k goal. With my skills I could look elsewhere, but I've found that job fit, feeling happy about my work and having flexibility, are more important to me than those extra few grand.

50k per year

have a look on indeed jobs site and what they paying teaching assistants because you're wasting your time and money on training in those fields if you want to WFH and earn £50k a year. You'll be lucky to bring in much more than half that in an on-site job in those fields!

Cerialkiller · 02/02/2026 15:14

I make about 20k freelance working school hours only but this is after 15 years in my industry and has taken 3 years of building up my business to get here. I had alot of support from DH in the first year when I was barely making anything.

I think I could possibly stretch to getting 30k a year but I only changed £29 an hour and have to wait until people need me so that's probably top end doing what I currently do.

Appleseason · 02/02/2026 15:15

I was out of the admin workforce for 5 years, and then covid hit. I have gone back for pretty much minimum wage. And i have NVQs etc
in business and admin.
I too would love to earn 50k but I don’t think it is attainable.

Jaffalemons · 02/02/2026 15:15

My admin earns that and WFH, but she also super technical in our industry, excellent skills, and current in her working practices.

incognitomummy · 02/02/2026 15:18

Sweetly1 · 02/02/2026 13:40

My experience is working in administration my last job was working as a Business administrator for social services 15 years ago. I recently did a teaching assistant level 2 course and I'm currently doing a intensive Business Administration course

What do those jobs pay now?

admin and £50k don’t usually go together in the same job advert.

unless it a company secretary

why are you Doing the qualifications you have done / are doing?
perhaps be more targeted with those so you are not wasting your time?

Look at something like this

But this lady has primary school children, so by the sounds of it she’s only been a SAHM for a few years, unless she has older children I guess?

I too think £50k FTE is going to be a stretch with limited experience and qualifications. especially as she doesn’t want to work in an office so training opportunities will be limited and most companies would want an inexperienced person in the office for a bit at the beginning to get to know the team and train (especially for an admin role).

How old are your children OP? You might have better luck doing something adhoc for now (supermarket work etc), until the children can make their own way to and from school.

HisNotHes · 02/02/2026 15:19

It’s the holy grail that most mums of young children are looking for but very few achieve.

Soonenough · 02/02/2026 15:22

Surely if you've managed not to work for 15 years with no income , then even 20/ 25 k will make quite a difference to your household . As others said it is unrealistic to expect to earn 50k without some niche qualification.

redskydelight · 02/02/2026 15:22

Friendlygingercat · 02/02/2026 14:28

I have a PhD. and do postgraduate private tutoring, fully remote. I charge £50-£80 per hour. Sometimes more depending on the level of support needed. Do you have any specialist knowledge you could use in that way?

I was also going to suggest this. SIL has gone into tutoring (her degree subject) after 15 years as a SAHM. She built up slowly by offering to tutor friend's DC for free and then has managed to spread her business by word of mouth, slowly increasing the rates she charges. A lot of this would be evenings and weekends though, so may not be suitable depending on your children - although she is also tutoring adults and home schooled children during the day.

If you don't have a degree, you might be able to market yourself working with primary age children.

TimeForATerf · 02/02/2026 15:23

I worked 37 years in a high level business admin/low level business manager role in a well known corporate. My salary when I left three years ago was about 44k. You are dreaming if you think you can get paid that, working from home after being out of the workforce for fifteen years. Maybe if you get a job and work for the next 15 years to build up to it.

schmalex · 02/02/2026 15:23

I went back to work after 15 years on 50k, but I was earning 100k before I left previously and have niche qualifications. I did get back to 80k witin 18 months or so. I also had done stuff that wasn't work while I had been off.

I was able to work from home once established due to the role, but most employers want you in 2 days a week or so now.

You're not going to earn 50k as a TA or in admin.
