Parking when there are dogs around

TheQuirkyMaker · 02/02/2026 08:05

I was in our local park yesterday, talking to another dog owner, when an SUV swept in right beside us, halted, and reversed into a parking space. As it reversed, I slapped it on the roof. The driver jumped out, angry, and I think was ready to give me a slap. I said the car park was empty (it was, it serves about 200 cars) and he had no need to park next to us and potentially hit a dog. He said he was parking near the skate park for his children, and our dogs should be on a lead (they weren't). They are elderly, obedient little dogs, and don't need to be on a leash but they are little and could be hit by a car.
I told him to "F--- Off" and felt okay at the time but couldn't sleep last night for worrying who was in the right.
Was I the unreasonable one?

Cats are classed as property. I looked it up recently as a neighbour has been feeding a friend's cat and locking it in his house when he goes out.

But the bit about not having to report running one over is correct.

Yes, cats are property. You don't have to report hitting one with your vehicle because they are only semi-domesticated. This is also why you cannot force your neighbour to stop their cat using your flower beds as a toilet - because they can't, cats are semi-wild.

Did you ever stop to think he was parking as close as he could to the childrens’ play area because he was thinking about their safety in the car park with moving vehicles ?
The only moving vehicle was his.

I thought your dog was off lead because you were just putting them in the back?

Irrelevant to this thread. And you might recognize recovery may have been mentioned.

It’s as relevant as the type of car that the man you abused was driving!

Another post by someone who thinks their dog-ownership takes precedence over everything and everybody else. It is getting rather tedious.

  1. Your dog should have been on a lead.
  2. People can choose whatever space they want in a car park - yuou do not own it.
  3. You slapped the roof of someone's car deliberately - count yourself lucky to have got away with this.
  4. You are indeed being very unreasonable indeed.
  5. Are you likely to learn anything from this? - frankly I doubt it.

She won't learn anything from it considering she admitted on another post that she felt no guilt at being caught out drink driving three times and she drives after drinking a bottle of vodka a day too. She doesn't care she just wanted Mumsnet to justify her shitty behaviour and it's backfiring on her

Totally agree, but "knuckle down" means to get on with a task in hand. I think you mean "double down" which is to stubbornly maintain a stance or opinion in the face of mass opposition.

Ha! You’re right (obviously) 😳

After three drink driving convictions I'm amazed she's not banned for a VERY long time. Or maybe she is.

Fulmine · 03/02/2026 23:42

Loving the sheer arrogance of someone with three drink driving convictions criticising someone else's driving. Especially for the crime of, er, parking in an empty parking space in a public car park.

It’s a minimum 3 year ban after 2 convictions within 10 years.

Lambington · 03/02/2026 23:54

Telling a stranger to "fuck off" in front of his children is unreasonable under any circumstances. You sound like an utter lunatic.

Fulmine · 03/02/2026 23:56

OP also says she has had countless parking tickets. So it's not as if she can claim any particular virtue with regard to her parking practices, either.

Elliania · 03/02/2026 23:59

You were wrong to slap his car.
You were wrong to berate him for parking in an open space.
You were wrong to tell him to fuck off.
You were wrong for not having your dog on a lead if you were concerned about other cars being near her. It is not the responsibility of other people around you to take more care of your dog's safety than you.

You were generally unreasonable and unpleasant for no reason.

Interesting theory, why do you say that?

What's the betting she's driving whilst banned & with no insurance?

It's not a theory. He's said so in a previous post.

It's a carpark, the man parked in a spot more suitable for his kids. He is entitled to do that. If a dog is in a carpark it should be on a lead, you where in the wrong

That thread is in AIBU and it's title is something about being kind to supermarket staff.

VickyEadieofThigh · 04/02/2026 13:32

AT THE TIME HE PARKED. But he wouldn't want his children crossing a busy car park later- would he? THAT'S why he wanted to park near to where they were going.

Oh my goodness!! TheQuirkyMaker really DOES have issues
@TheNightingalesStarling LObstersLass is right!! In that thread, OP does claim to be male!
In actual fact (I’m getting so confused here) does the OP ever state that they’re female?
