Online shopping won’t deliver to under 18 year old

Does anyone know the reason for this. Completely my fault for not knowing this was a thing. Left 16 year old DD to be in for the grocery shopping and driver wouldn’t deliver it as she was under 18. I was an hour away from home. I rang customer services and they said they can’t override even though no age restricted goods. Very kindly the redelivered when I was home. I just wonder what the reason for this. Under 16 I can see maybe but a 16 year old could have walked into the store and bought all the goods I’d ordered. I

Alcohol in your shopping.

Who would be liable if your DD took in the delivery - then got blind drunk drinking all the wine you purchased with your shopping?

Its a bit nanny state, but if online shopping was around when I was a kid - i can kind of imagine me and my friends ordering some cheap food to Trojan horse in some lambrini and strong cider 🤣🤢

The post says “no age restricted goods”

BendingSpoons · 02/02/2026 07:45

Yes this is a 'thing' even if no alcohol. Possibly to safeguard against drivers interacting with under 18 year olds or in case of any problems that a 'child' is deemed too young to have responsibility for.

Mama2many73 · 02/02/2026 07:45

I dont understand why they wouldnt deliver unless there was some age related items. 16yr olds could be living alone so seems weird.
Our neighbour got a delivery once(asda -including a bottle of vodka) which her 16yr old was accepting. I was in our garden and I heard the driver ask if there was an adult in, no, he then said he couldn't deliver the alcohol. I offered to accept it until her mam came in which the delivery man was ok with.

What you think it’s a blanket policy because you can order alcohol? Because OP said there were no age- restricted products.

BellissimoGecko · 02/02/2026 07:46

I don’t know. It’s just a thing, even if there is no alcohol in your order (like yours). Glad they redelivered!

Which shop does that? Tesco won't do under 18, certainly not where I am anyway. It is a bit frustrating as my 16yo is perfectly capable of accepting and putting away a delivery

Ponoka7 · 02/02/2026 07:52

It was inspired by 'think 25', last minute changes could mean that a item isn't flagged, but it's also because you aren't an adult in the UK until 18 and there's a grey area around leaving your shopping with a minor and then you needing to claim a refund for missing items. The whole online shopping registration/payments etc is a contract set out with T&Cs, governed by consumer laws and a minor can't enter into them. Housing associations, utility companies now won't carry out work unless an adult is present.

AgnesMcDoo · 02/02/2026 07:52

It’s annoying.

I get it if there’s age restricted products but if not it’s just a policy made up by the shop. There’s no law to stop an h see 18 receiving a shopping delivery.

Read the OP properly

I recently ordered Morrisons through Amazon, they leave on the door step and it is in insulated bags. Not great for the environment, but I needed some shopping at short notice and was able to book same day.

vipersnest1 · 02/02/2026 07:55

I got age checked in ikea recently because I’d bought a knife sharpener, not even an actual knife!
The world has gone mad.

If they look older, then it often won't be questioned. After the stabbings carried out by teens, after knives have been delivered to pick up points etc, policies have changed.

crowsfeet57 · 02/02/2026 08:00

This rule protects your child from predators and protect the driver from allegations

Odd. Never been an issue here. Has happened once or twice. Never even knew it wasn't 'allowed'

I don't order knives in my shopping.....

It’s very easy to get alcohol delivered, I order cases of wine and they can be left in a safe space and there is no age verification when ordering. Amazon tends to be pretty hit or miss when they require age verification.

StrawberrySquash · 02/02/2026 08:30

I get companies wanting to cover themselves but it does seem like part of the infantilisation of teenagers. It's not so long since you could leave home, get married, have a baby at sixteen. But you can't order some shopping. (Not that I'd recommend the first three!)

haha - I recently brought a knife at Ikea and it came up that they don't even sell knives to people under 21. I asked what students are meant to do (since I thought it was basically the law that all students buy all their kitchen stuff at Ikea) and they said they tell them to go to Tesco.....

Thanksforyourlackofthought · 02/02/2026 08:52

I wonder if it’s a new thing? When my dc was 15/16 I often had deliveries to the house and he would make sure he was in if I got held up at work.

TY78910 · 02/02/2026 08:57

Ive gone through the Asda T&Cs and three times they state they won’t deliver to U18. No explanation but its very clear.

My guess it’s a mixture of drivers having to deal with younger members of the public and also disputes in delivery (substitutes etc).

plentyofsunshine · 02/02/2026 08:13

Which shop?

Tesco has handed over the shopping to my 15yo before. He’s about 6ft and I just assumed the driver had thought he was a bit older (or maybe he just didn’t care) no booze just food.
