Online shopping won’t deliver to under 18 year old

Does anyone know the reason for this. Completely my fault for not knowing this was a thing. Left 16 year old DD to be in for the grocery shopping and driver wouldn’t deliver it as she was under 18. I was an hour away from home. I rang customer services and they said they can’t override even though no age restricted goods. Very kindly the redelivered when I was home. I just wonder what the reason for this. Under 16 I can see maybe but a 16 year old could have walked into the store and bought all the goods I’d ordered. I

Shops can ‘make up’ any policy they want. As long as it is legal of course. But they don’t have to deliver to a child if they don’t want to.

Of course they can.

it’s still annoying

Yes, there are loads of rules about what 16-17yo can receive - if you have paracetamol, drain unblocker, even non-alcoholic beer seems to need to be authorised. My eldest is nearly 21, but androgynous and petite so looks like a 15yo boy. She HATES it if I ask her to take deliveries in as she has to have her passport on hand to prove her age.

It’s a fricking pain. But then my mum used to send me to the off-licence at the local pub with a ‘note’ to buy 10 B&H…

Ocado will deliver to under 18s, my 17 year old receives ours every week and has done for some time. They've done it occasionally since about age 12 but regularly for the last year, never been an issue at all if there's no alcohol etc.

The post says “no age restricted goods”

seriously how shit is people's reading comprehension now!

Even if you happened to miss it at first glance, surely you'd think before posting 'well age restricted goods would be the most likely for not allowing it, surely the OP would have specified it if that was the case....let me just check again because it would be really weird if she hadn't thought of that, again, BLINDINGLY OBVIOUS reason...oh wait she did!"

I have found this policy frustrating when I have been asked to work later but have shopping ordered. My 16 year will be home and capable but I have to turn down the work because they won’t deliver with her home alone. Does make me wonder how 16/17 yo who have moved out cope.

Gwenhwyfar · 02/02/2026 18:58

"Does make me wonder how 16/17 yo who have moved out cope."

I think the policy is stupid, but surely a single person of that age goes to the shops.

We had this problem when my daughter was under 18 and studying in London. She always ended up having to find someone in her student accomodation to sign for it on it behalf

DeftGoldHedgehog · 02/02/2026 19:16

I did a grocery Deliveroo to DD2 (16) at home the other day, and that was ok, no alcohol in it.

IAmKerplunk · 02/02/2026 19:19

My 15yr old brings in my shopping when Tesco deliver and (when there is no age restricted products) I would say 90% of the time the driver doesn’t ask if there is an adult in the house (I am always at home win case they do ask)

Cantheowneroftheredcorsapleasemovetheircar · 02/02/2026 19:29

There was an article in a new of the papers a couple of years ago about this - a seventeen year old single mum living on her own wasn't allowed her own shopping because she was under 18. She was left with nothing for dinner.

I'll try and find a link

I think it's silly. Providing there's no age restricted items, I see no reason why a teenage can't be trusted to put some shopping away.

Safeguarding policies. Their drivers won’t have an enhanced DBS check so not cleared to be alone with a child.

I got age checked in ikea recently because I’d bought a knife sharpener, not even an actual knife!
The world has gone mad.

I can unfortunately beat this. I was ID’d for a toddler set of cutlery, the packaging clearly showed it was a toddler set but it was a very computer says no situation
