Do you still have an old fashioned RTS electricity meter

MyCheekyEagle · 31/01/2026 13:19

Do you still have an old fashioned meter and it still works? I do & it seems to be working fine. Bills and meter reads are still consistent. I have left it on the cheaper night rate as I'm an insomniac & so will do the washing & drying in the winter. I dont use it for heating and hot water.
In the run up to the switch off at 30th June last year I was being hounded by my electricituly supplier to change but I did nothing about it. They're no longer hounding me.
I watched a tv program on channel 5 about smart meters the other night and I've not changed my mind about changing.

Yes. It still works.

GentleSheep · 31/01/2026 13:21

Yes ours is ancient. Occasionally get emails from our supplier that it needs to be replaced etc but we just ignore it. Works fine.

Moraxella · 31/01/2026 13:28

reassured others are dodging the same emails that I am! They are so aggressive

Plump82 · 31/01/2026 13:31

I'm dodging the emails as well as apart from not wanting a smart meter, installation would be a pain in the butt.
I'm interested to know more about the switch off at the end of June? I've not heard anything about this.

RaraRachael · 31/01/2026 13:32

Still have one and I send monthly readings for my bills. I continually receive letters and emails saying I MUST get a smart meter as my old one probably isn't accurate.
They even sent me an appointment when someone would be round to install it without consulting me.

I will resist at all costs.

FuzzyWolf · 31/01/2026 13:34

The problem is that if it turns out to not be recording accurately (and they tend to gradually go wrong) then the warnings you have received mean that you won’t be due any reimbursement for underpaying. You also need to take into account that the night rate won’t turn on which is likely to impact heating once the RTS stops. Finally, as your energy supplier owns the meter, if you won’t allow access they can go to court to obtain a warrant to enter your property and change it.

ValidPistachio · 31/01/2026 13:41

Some RTS meters will continue to work properly after the signal is switched off, many won't. In any case, most are so old now that they're overdue for replacement anyway.

JassyRadlett · 31/01/2026 13:41

The RTS signal is being switched off area by area. It started last June but not done all at once.

When that happens what happens with the meters is temperamental - you're less likely to be badly affected as you don't use it for heating and hot water but ultimately these meters are obsolete technology and once the signal they're linked to is off problems are more likely to occur.

You have the right to have a smart meter installed in "dumb" mode if for whatever reason you don't want a smart meter.

GreyfriarsJobbies · 31/01/2026 13:42

Yeah I've been ignoring this for ages. I've not really got anything against having a smart meter, the main thing is that the ones I've got work just fine so I've nothing to gain from the hassle of having a new one installed. I won't do anything different so why bother.

Edit: I've just realised off the back of this that the ones I've got aren't RTS (I think - I didn't even realise that was a thing), but still, I'm ignoring all the letters/texts etc.

Your meter may no longer be accurate though. That's why they all have certification periods in the first place.

You’re fine til you get a power cut then the machine stops working . I’ve heard a few people have the problem , and then it happened to me last year and I’ve had to have a smart meter. The machine doesn’t come back on after the power cut .

Why does that matter? And we've had a few power cuts of late and our meters still work fine. I remain unpanicked.

Why do you think it matters? Would you go to petrol station with pumps you knew to be inaccurate? I sure as hell wouldn’t, unless I knew for a fact they were under-reading.

We get brief power cuts once or twice a month. They used to be more frequent and last longer, hours sometimes. Despite that the meter has been working reliably for 25+ years.

RedRosie · 31/01/2026 15:27

They (EdF) insisted on replacing our meter last June, and we've not had a bill since. The so called smart meter shows 0.00. The technology was not ready in some areas. They have no idea how much we are using ... I've just opened a case with the ombudsman. My advice is resistance for now.

RedRosie · 31/01/2026 15:28

And our storage heaters won't work, as they have no idea what time it is. 😂

Vaxtable · 31/01/2026 15:30

I really don’t see the issue in having smart meters. Had one for years now with no issues and far more accurate readings. Also daily information that tells me usage etc

Lougle · 31/01/2026 15:43

It only takes about 90 minutes to have a meter installed. No big deal. I wanted a SMETS 2 meter so that I could have an EV tariff with Octopus.

HostaCentral · 31/01/2026 16:03

I've not got an old RTS...... But we also can't have a digital meter because we're in a signal black spot..... What happens then??

RhannionKPSS · 31/01/2026 16:06

Yes, we do and I’m not changing it

You’ll change your tune if your heating and hot water stops working properly.

Surely it’s still displaying the actual reading, in kWh?

WatalotIgot · 31/01/2026 16:10

We have had smart meters since 1998 in 3 different areas and they have been fine. You don't get off peak rates if you don't have one, so you are always on a standard tariff no matter what time of day you are using gas/electricity. We keep our display upstairs so we don't keep an eye on it minute by minute, more like day to day.

We’re the same. Somehow our meter cupboard acts as a faraday cage and will not send or receive any signal.

Miranda65 · 31/01/2026 16:13

I still have old electricity and gas meters. They work fine. I could probably wallpaper the entire house with the number of letters I've had about smart meters, but they all go straight in the bin. I neither want nor need a smart meter.
