Do you still have an old fashioned RTS electricity meter

Do you still have an old fashioned meter and it still works? I do & it seems to be working fine. Bills and meter reads are still consistent. I have left it on the cheaper night rate as I'm an insomniac & so will do the washing & drying in the winter. I dont use it for heating and hot water.
In the run up to the switch off at 30th June last year I was being hounded by my electricituly supplier to change but I did nothing about it. They're no longer hounding me.
I watched a tv program on channel 5 about smart meters the other night and I've not changed my mind about changing.

I have an old fashioned dial meter, but I dont think it's an rts meter.

As I said, whatever

And, as I said, rudeness.

If it’s got dials, it won’t be an RTS meter, but it should have been replaced many years ago.

We have an old electric dial meter. Been getting letters to ask us to update for years…. Can’t see why we would change it as it works just fine. We just submit readings monthly.

Did get the gas meter updated, as understood the potential safety concerns with an ancient one.

It's very good of you to point that out😊(especially given my laziness in not figuring it out for myself!)

It's not totally unheard of for electric meters to catch fire, particularly very old ones. It might seem to be working fine, but such an old meter might be overcharging you.

For electricity I have a digital display meter (non smart) it was put in when we moved in approx 20 years old, because the one that was already there was measuring in imperial measurements, not metric.
The gas meter is a non smart, but digital display meter so we take monthly readings between the reader's visits.
About a year ago the meter reader managed to break the gas meter whilst reading it and it took 3 months to get it sorted. One guy from Eon turned up, scratched his chin and said that he needed to refer to his supervisor about the electricity meter due to a technical issue (not sure if its because we have an overhead supply from the street and obviously they need the electricity to be able to transmit the reading. , they decided it couldn't be done. A month later another guy turns up, takes one look at the electricity meter and says it cannot be done. Scratches his head refers to his supervisor and decides we cannot be smart metered.

On the 3rd visit last year we got a new digital, "non smart" gas meter because we were going around in circles with Eon and I threatened to escalate all the way to Ofgen.
So yes you can have a replacement meter that isn't "smart" because I have one.

I've actually heard of more people having issues like these with smart meters than old style ones. One person had no electricity because his smart meter went wrong and couldn't get any help online to sort it out until the Monday.

Those with RTS meters will have to change as on a phased basis the RTS meters are being switched off which would result in no electric supply to the property. We had these meters in some of our rental properties and changed them all to smart meters before we sold them.
Your electric company will be able to tell you when they are being switched off in your area.

You don’t know they’re not either. Meters have a design life, beyond which they're expected to start to lose accuracy. This is why suppliers are required, by law, to replace them. This is a good thing, for everyone.

...unless I'm being undercharged at the moment of course, then a new one wouldn't be good for me. But like I say if I am it'll be a tiny amount because it's been basically the same since I moved in 12 years ago. However, if I do end up in poverty or my house catches fire as a result, or if it turns out non-smart meters attract rats or meteors or whatever other scare stories are out there, then I will come back and say 'Why, WHY did I not listen to that Pistachio person, I have been a fool'. For now, though, I remain very relaxed about my shonky old meter.

No it won’t. It will mean the meter cannot be switched between low and normal rate. That is all.

It may also mean that the storage heater and immersion heater circuit is stuck either permanently on, or permanently off, with no means for the householder to override it.

Ginmonkeyagain · 01/02/2026 07:29

Blimey, RYS and DTS was seen as old fashioned and virtually obsolete when I worked in energy in 2009.

I have has a smart meter for years, I have yet to be switched off remotely but I am about to enjoy a morning of free electricity tanks to my smart meter enabled load shifting tariff.

Doveyouknow · 01/02/2026 09:54

RTS meters rely on a radio signal that is being turned off. Once it is turned off the meters won't work properly. That's why they need to be replaced. Of course you can wait until the signal turns off and then replace them then. It's probably better to do it beforehand though.
