Latest Harlan Coben series…..

Is it just me that thinks they’re absolute dog shit? I’ve watched a few, mostly because the one with Michael C Hall was ok. But my god, I’ve just watched episode 4 of Run Away…. James Nesbitt is actually awful, his acting gets worse and worse. I went against my instinct and started this because we have been recommended it by so many people. I can’t watch another episode 😆 Can’t believe I’ve wasted this many minutes of my life on another series. (also whenever Ruth Jones refers to Neil by name, I have to say “the baby” - every time - which doesn’t help).

Am I being unreasonable and missing that it is gripping, well acted and excellent?

Or am I being reasonable in that the acting is awful, it’s unrealistic, there are more holes in it than ten golf courses and it’s basically just shit?

Obviously this is light hearted and everyone likes different things. I’m mostly asking because people I would’ve thought ( and know actually) like a lot of the same stuff as DH and I are the ones that recommended it.

I quite like them. They’re total trash but there is something about them I find watchable.

JMSA · 31/01/2026 14:16

They are always totally shite 😆

Runaway was absolute dog shit. YANBU, op.

The ‘twist’ at the end was ridiculous.

I will never know… and I don’t care what the twist is because i am not watching any more 😆 honestly. I’m never being drawn into another one. This reminds me of when we went to Turkey last year against my judgement because so many people raved about it. Never again. But that’s another thread 🤣

OMG thank you!! I don't understand why James Nesbitt gets to appear in every single English version of Harlan Coben's series. I think he's dreadful and getting worse. Myself and my husband only managed to get through episode 2 and gave up so I think you've done amazing getting to episode 4. Other series I've been able to get through because the stories were so good but I didn't even enjoy the story this time. A real pity because I love Harlan Coben normally

JN is getting worse isn’t he?! Quite liked him in the days of Cold Feet but cannot abide him any more. Love Ruth Jones but what a mad character that is. Oh. “I’ve got your boss on the phone”……. Let me look through this entire crime scene - apparently before any other actual detectives turn up….

The police being satisfied it was the two assassins who killed Aaron also made no sense. The explanation they were “returning to the scene of the crime” barely stacks up - what kind of gun for hire goes back to reminisce?

I think they’re doing it on purpose - high camp, so bad it’s good type of thing.

A word of caution if anyone is thinking of watching His & Hers instead, the plot holes have plot holes. There are tons of Reddit threads about the inconsistencies.

Tbh anything that includes James Nesbitt these days is an instant no from me

Gossipisgood · 18/02/2026 16:17

I binged watched run away in one day as it was an easy watch & quite enjoyed it I've just started episode one of Stay Close which also stars James Nesbitt.

UrbanFan · 18/02/2026 16:20

I watched half of episode 1 and binned in. Load of rubbish.

MsSomebodyNow · 23/02/2026 15:56

I’ve just started watching The Five to see what that one is like. I think this one is pretty good so far. I’m on episode 4

The trouble with Harlan Coben's shows is that all of them follow the same pattern - namely that something introduced in the last or penultimate episode, not even tangentially-related to anything that's happened in all of the episodes up to that point, turns out to be the "big twist". Thus rendering as meaningless every minute that you spent watching up to then.

This is not how twists are supposed to work. He needs to go back to writing school, preferably by way of The Usual Suspects.
