Latest Harlan Coben series…..

Is it just me that thinks they’re absolute dog shit? I’ve watched a few, mostly because the one with Michael C Hall was ok. But my god, I’ve just watched episode 4 of Run Away…. James Nesbitt is actually awful, his acting gets worse and worse. I went against my instinct and started this because we have been recommended it by so many people. I can’t watch another episode 😆 Can’t believe I’ve wasted this many minutes of my life on another series. (also whenever Ruth Jones refers to Neil by name, I have to say “the baby” - every time - which doesn’t help).

Am I being unreasonable and missing that it is gripping, well acted and excellent?

Or am I being reasonable in that the acting is awful, it’s unrealistic, there are more holes in it than ten golf courses and it’s basically just shit?

Obviously this is light hearted and everyone likes different things. I’m mostly asking because people I would’ve thought ( and know actually) like a lot of the same stuff as DH and I are the ones that recommended it.

I've found all the Harlan Coben series awful! The acting, the story lines and there is something else about them I can't put my finger on the is really annoying. We keep trying them for some reason, probably because other people rave about them, but they just seem to get worse and worse. I used to like James Nesbitt but his acting was so bad in this and he was so irritating!

TittyGajillions · 29/01/2026 22:24

James Nesbitts eyebrows do most of the acting for him. We just watched Fool me Once and thought it was way worse than Run Away, everything from the opening credits to the ludicrous twist was just awful.

Spanglemum02 · 29/01/2026 22:27

The books are set in America amd some plot details don't work as well in the UK.

dayswithaY · 29/01/2026 22:30

My friend was actually angry about how awful Run Away is and warned me not to watch.

I still haven’t recovered from the one with Michelle Keegan where she spent every episode desperately trying to find out who killed her husband via helicopters and shoot outs. Turns out she killed him, so what was the point of the investigation, had she forgotten it was her?

I don’t even care if that’s a spoiler, I’ve saved you some time.

500daysofspring · 29/01/2026 22:32

I watched the one with Michelle Keegan and that was plenty. Absolute garbage.

Oh well I will stop watching. 🤣 How come she killed him?

Coffeeandbooks88 · 29/01/2026 22:37

Run away was not bad. There was a decent twist at the end.

Devuelta81 · 29/01/2026 22:39

There were so many ridiculous twists that came out of nowhere, a lot of them crammed into the last episode - agree it was absolutely shit!

Hihibye · 29/01/2026 22:40

I didn't mind the Michelle Keegan one but stopped runaway after the 1st episode!

organisedadmin · 29/01/2026 22:42

The earlier ones were better but I still watch them. His & hers is good if you want an alternative.

1980isitjustme · 29/01/2026 22:42

It gets far worse and more ridiculous by the episode - if you are only on episode 4 you need to brace yourself for what’s to come 🤣

organisedadmin · 29/01/2026 22:42

The Michelle Keegan one was worse than Runaway tbf.

JasonTindallsTan · 29/01/2026 22:52

I find that mostly they’re watchable until the last episode and you watch it and go what the fuck was that?! The most unrealistic outrageous ridiculous ways of tying up a plot ever.

And why are there always a ludicrous pair of psychos in them? There were a weird set of boy girl twins in one and then in this one the lad from big boys or whatever it’s called and his girlfriend going in shooting up randoms (I gave up after 2 episodes so no idea if he got explained away).

NewsOfMidLevelPortent · 29/01/2026 22:52

I've watched a few and enjoyed them for what they were, but I had to stop with Shelter. Just couldn't stand the characters.

hulahooper2 · 29/01/2026 22:54

I thought it was very pantomime like

Coffeeandbooks88 · 29/01/2026 22:56

Massive houses too.

The ending was awful!

Yuasa · 29/01/2026 23:14

They always have a weird, unreal uncanny valley-type vibe about them for me. Young people that dress like teenagers in an old GCSE textbook, schools that look like the international headquarters of some sinister cult religion, strange mishmash of locations. There was one where they’d filmed partially in Hungary according to the credits and they’d obviously not bothered to dress things like light switches and doors to make it look like we were still in the UK.

I could deal with these things if I enjoyed the plots more, but I’ve given up on the last two. Things got too silly and far fetched too soon.

Ireolu · 29/01/2026 23:31

Just finished it today after stopping and starting since they day it was released. It was so badly acted by everyone. I continued hoping it would improve. Lost cause. Even down arrowed it at the end in frustration. Pile of crap.

XelaM · 29/01/2026 23:35

The absolutely only Harlan Coben series that was actually good with great acting and a proper logical ending is Five . It's actually very good. The rest are total garbage.

fruitpastille · 29/01/2026 23:36

I read the book first and that's pretty rubbish as well to be honest but at least it had the slight glamour of being set in America.

Bowcup · 29/01/2026 23:39

The new one, Missing You, is total crap. I didn’t mind the other ones.

Goditsmemargaret · 29/01/2026 23:43

All his (I think) stuff on Netflix is utterly shit.

carconcerns · 29/01/2026 23:43

I recently watched the Michelle keegan one and thought it was completely and utterly ridiculous. Her acting was atrocious too, so bad in fact out of curiosity I looked on here to see if it was just me and found an older thread where everyone was raving about how good it was and how great her acting was - amazed me😁

CotswoldsCamilla · 29/01/2026 23:55

I’m watching it. Not great but I love Ruth Jones. The PP was right, it feels like an American show but set in the UK with Irish and British actors. If I were James Nesbitt, I’d get my (bottom) teeth done. It’s all I can look at.
