Girls arriving and leaving work early morning late evening

OneCheeryGoldMoose · 29/01/2026 09:35

I know I'll probably be told off but just for traffic posting on here.

My husband and I run a company and we have two younger girls who run the office with us.

Husband and I are going away for three weeks for a wedding and making a family holiday of it as it's over the other side of the world.

We have an office that's on an industrial estate and is very dark and not well lit in the mornings and evenings- and we start early due to the nature of the business 5.30/6am to get all the boys in and out with job pack if they are required on the day.

Normally we pick the girls up on the way in and drop them home during the winter for safety as they are local.

I know it's probably over the top of me but we are worried about them feeling safe getting in and out on their own in the mornings and evenings (it is a sketchy South London Industrial estate)- does anyone have any suggestions to make them feel a bit safer. We have a ring camera set up on the door of the office.

None of the boys can bring them in as they have material to pick up.

Well, aren't you fabulous, lovely, caring employers?❤️

Sunshineandblueskysalltheway · 29/01/2026 18:07

'If that's offended some people you would have a breakdown with the rest of the things we all call each other lol.'

I wouldn't be offended. I would be too busy laughing at the look on your stupid face at the employment tribunal. Lol.

Andflop · 29/01/2026 18:20

It’s light by 7.30am
What time do you usually pick them up?

Yes, you're being completely unreasonable

Only just when the weather is bad - it was still properly dark at 7.30 on Tuesday morning with the storm. But in any case, the OP said

we start early due to the nature of the business 5.30/6am

So whether or not it's light then doesn't really make much difference. And knowing some of these industrial estates, walking alongside woods, commons or through unlit access roads in the early daylight isn't any less precarious for it being just after sunrise.

So what are you suggesting?

Talkingfrog · 29/01/2026 19:10

You sound a lovely employer. Glad you have worked out a solution ypu are noth happy with.

Offering the Ubers seems a very fair (and kind) thing to do.

fingfong · 29/01/2026 19:56

@OneCheeryGoldMoose ignore all these weirdos calling you out for all sorts - my daughters are 20 and 22 and if they had a boss like you, I'd be delighted. It shows you actually care about them, they clearly aren't just worker bees. bloody hell, I know I'm old when I see the attitude of some of these posters!!

Geronimode · 29/01/2026 20:03

you’re a lovely boss looking out for the girls and lads- people are OTT and love to peck away

Jade247 · 29/01/2026 20:18

It baffles me how anyone has thrown a negative spin on this. You are truly a lovey person caring about your employees - if only there were more people in the world like you. I would probably accept they are ok to travel together but leave a Uber account or something should they start traveling in and feel unsafe. Could get them both a torch , allow the to go slightly earlier - wel done for caring x

HolesInTheAlbertHall · 29/01/2026 09:45

How old are they. You use the term girls. Are they not women?

If you are employing girls then it would be a safeguarding concern that they are starting so early.

Oh dear you know what OP means. She means young women. There is always someone ie you being a complete pedant. OP is trying to think of her employees. You sound lovely OP very kind and considerate but it would be low risk if they are arriving together I'm sure they'll be fine. Enjoy your holiday.

They're finishing at 3 and I've out our card on their ubers. x

In case you’re not aware, regular transport of this nature paid for by the employer (employee home to workplace) is classed as a benefit in kind and can be reportable on P11ds resulting in additional tax for your employees and NI for you. Might be worth looking into

We know she's infantilising and patronising grown adults, yes.
It's not pedantic at all.

TartanMammy · 29/01/2026 23:16

You sound like great employers who care about their staff and treat them well. A rare thing. I hope you have a lovely holiday, sounds like you work hard and deserve it.

It's been pointed out multiple times though. At one point does your point about her 'infantilising and patronising' become you being hectoring and self-righteous toward somebody who clearly does have good intentions?

Patchworkquilts · 30/01/2026 06:13

Statistically they are at a higher risk of being assaulted by someone they know than by a stranger. So I wouldn’t ask the boys to collect them.

Could you ask them if they would like you to hire an agency security guard for the three weeks just to be there for opening up and at the end of the day to be there for them ? Or let them start later and finish early if the job allows it .

This is a really good solution. Hire a security guard for opening and locking up times

I was waiting for some sensible suggestions, which I have received. Clearly some people are just insane.

Can you pay your son to collect them and take them in?

He's already working unfortunatley.

Not every one in employment is pappy enough to get offended about anything enough to take their employer to tribunal. Especially when you work in the trades. I’m the only ‘girl’ in my office, which sounds surprisingly like the OP’s and after 12 years here and some truly blue banter back and forth, still never been offended.

You say the boys can't do it, is it that they don't want to or more of a timing / shift scheduled issue ?
Could you get them to start early/ finish later and pay them extra to cover the time and fuel ?

Or you could trust them do what they said and come together. They don't really need the 'boys' to come to their rescue. That's so patronising to the men and the women (I'm assuming they're all not school age, so not sure why we're calling the boys and girls).
