To get a nose job?

WonkyConk · 29/01/2026 02:06

I’ve always hated my nose and then last year I broke it, so as well as being too big and having a bump in it, it’s also wonky. Not terribly wonky but not great either.

I would love a nose job, but at the same time I wonder if there’s any point, I’m mid forties now and I’ve put up with a terrible nose this long. I’m also worried that I might end up hating the results and regretting it. I am pretty antisocial, my long term partner still finds me attractive, so it would very much be something I’m doing for myself.

I wouldn’t be able to pay for it outright but I’ve checked and I would be eligible for low interest finance and the repayments wouldn’t be a problem.

Am I mad to even consider it at my age?

No, but jfc it’s a painful op. And there is a wide variety of skill levels. I had to have a septoplasty on the NHS, and it didn’t come out that well, and was seriously more painful than childbirth.

Driftingawaynow · 29/01/2026 02:09

Sorry possibly not that helpful 🫣

No that is helpful and definitely something to consider! I had my nose reset under the NHS last year whilst awake and that pretty bad so I imagine it would be very painful to have a full nose job. Hopefully they issue some heavy duty painkillers 😬

Best thing my Mum ever did, she said. She was 49 at the time.

HelsinkiLights · 29/01/2026 02:25

If it's really annoying you, then go for it.
Due to a broken nose & really bad sinus problems I had a septorhinoplasty on the NHS. They did a really good job & it didn't hurt one bit.
But then I'm weird with pain, as what hurts most people doesn't affect me & what most people can cope with hurts like hell!

I’m not generally wussy with pain so I reckon I could handle it 🤣. I did wonder if I’d be able to wangle it on the NHS as they did say that if I had breathing issues I could go back and have a septoplasty. And since I had the break I constantly have a nose full of bogies which doesn’t make breathing easy. But I got the impression that that would just be my septum, I don’t think the septorhinoplasty was on offer!

It's nice that your long-term partner finds you attractive. But apparently not attractive enough to marry you, so what happens if he walks out?

I think there's nothing wrong with getting a nose job. Just be careful choosing your doctor. You might have a new nose and suddenly get a promotion at work.

Perhaps this is is a second relationship and op doesn’t wish to complicate things by getting married.

I’d got for it op, you can afford it.

Experience must vary a lot, because my nose job wasn't painful other than a headache the day of.

Cornishwafer · 29/01/2026 06:57

I used to work for a cosmetic surgeon (a well respected one) and a large percentage of clients who consulted with him for noses were there for secondary (or even third) rhinoplasties. The bulk of these weren't obsessive people with body dismorphia but cases where the result looked worse than pre-surgery...a lot of these people had gone to trusted surgeons with good reviews..but apparently rhinoplasty is one of the most difficult ops to get right and has highest number of dissatisfied patients. Sometimes the surgeon isnt at fault and nothing goes wrong, but result just doesnt look right.
Swelling can easily take years to go down and if anything needs tweating they make patients wait 6 to 12 months before doikg it.
From what i saw, cases like simply smoothing a bump down seemed to have a better and more predictable outcome than things like narrowing the nose, making nose smaller etc. 'I miss my old nose' was heard more than once.

Weirdly, i never heard anyone mention pain!

Hogwartsian · 29/01/2026 07:40

I had a nose job, just my bump smoothed down, and it wasn't painful. Maybe the tiniest ache the day after but nothing paracetamol wouldn't fix.

Hope you dont mind me asking?
I have a smallish nose bump which along with a slightly receding chin makes my nose look more pronounced so would consider getting the bump reduced. (Have also considered getting a small chin implant to balance things out)

Was it as expensive as a more extensive nose job?

Cornishwafer · 29/01/2026 08:24

Worth googling non-sugical rhinoplasties...may or may not be helpful to the OP but they can work wonders for nasal bumps. Not a longterm solution ..maybe lasts a year or so but definately safer and more predictable than a nose job and a fraction of the price.
If i had a bump on my nose and hated it, thats what id do but i think they can sometimes give a face real character and beauty.

WhitsunWedding · 29/01/2026 08:32

Do it! Why go through life with a nose you hate?

3678194b · 29/01/2026 08:33

People I know who have had nose jobs in this country, their noses don't look very different. I think surgeons here are very conservative and the changes are only subtle, probably best for fixing a bump you can see in profile etc.

I don't particularly like my nose, it's not horrible or even noticeable but I don't like how it looks in photos! IRL it looks uneventful. I wouldn't take the risk of having it done as it may look worse, I may have problems or it may not look that different/better.

I blame the celebrity culture, so many of them have had nose jobs, not to mention whatever else.

Totally agree. The wife of the surgeon i worked with had nagged him for a nose job when they first got married she has a 'big nose' i suppose..he refused and discouraged her in general and after seeing patients coming to him for revisisons over the years she said she's glad he did.
A surgeon can do a perfect technical job, following patients wishes exactly and it can still look awful...throw the face out of balance., make the upper lip too long (if nose is shortened) etc etc.skin type plays a huge part too.
Its not the exact route to improving appearance people think it is.

WonkyConk · 29/01/2026 11:33

I think that’s my worry - what if I hated the new nose? I had Botox once and I really didn’t like how it made me look, it was very subtle but my face just didn’t look like my face anymore. Maybe my face would look out of balance with a smaller nose, and there’s no going back once it’s done. I asked chat gpt to show me what I’d look like if I had a nose job earlier and I can’t say I loved it…although the real life version may not look like that of course.

On the other hand, I might absolutely love the results if I had it done…but if I don’t then I’m stuck with it.

Meh if he goes, he goes 🤣. I love him dearly but I’m well on my way to becoming a crazy dog lady and I’d fine.

I also have a bump and would like it filed down - it looks broken although it isn't. It's a bit long too but the bump is what draws attention to it I feel.

The reason I have put it off (45) is my daughter has the same nose - she is teenaged atm and I don't want to give her a complex by having mine done when I can see she has my nose and not (thankfully) her father's.

GCSEBiostruggles · 29/01/2026 11:46

Out of interest, those who have had the bump filed - how much did it cost and how many days did it take to recover?

Ha! Great! Then do what would make you happy! I'm sure you can check around for a good doctor with a good track record.

Twoshoesnewshoes · 29/01/2026 21:51

You might have your nose for another 40 years or more - might as well get one you like.

VanityUnit66 · 29/01/2026 22:15

I had mine done in my late 20s. I’m now mid 40s. My nose had a very pronounced bump and the tip was very wide so I had that taken in and the bump removed. Every day I think what a good decision it was - it made me so much happier in mi own skin.

As another poster was saying rhinoplasty has a high revision rate - it’s incredibly fine work covered with thin skin so imperfections can occur. I had a small bump which only became apparent months after - the same surgeon rectified this for free.

I didn’t find it particularly painful, the worst bit was sleeping upright for a few days.

go for it!

Not attractive enough to marry you? WTF?

OP, go for it. I had a tummy tuck and it has changed absolutely every single element of my life; my confidence soared and I became much more outgoing. I would do it again tomorrow.

faeriesandelves · 29/01/2026 22:40

I’m considering a nose job for my 60th birthday. I’ve hated mine forever. I keep putting my face into AI and ask for smaller nose / no bump / smaller nostrils (if even possible) and it’s amazing how different I look. It’s actually made me have a rethink. I just don’t know what to do so interested in everyone’s experiences. Thanks OP for starting this thread
