How much of a problem would you consider this bill to be if you have this amount of money?

If you had 60k in savings, which are added to by around 1k a month, to what extent would you consider it a problem to pay out 7k to fix something in your home? Not cosmetic, actual work that needed to be done.

Would it ruin your day? Feel a bit shit? Would it not bother you at all?

Such as? Every Google result confirms pissed to be mean annoyed is only American and although widely understood in the UK it is an import. It's more annoying than most US imports because it isn't just that we generally use a different word but that that word itself has a different meaning.

And how do you know that poster isn't American? Stop policing people's language, it's really fucking tedious. There's a board for this kind of nonsense. If it isn't offensive or preventing people's understanding then it serves no purpose other than you spotting an opportunity to get on your soapbox.

As to the op, I'd feel a mix of emotions. Really grateful I had the money but also annoyed to spend it on something boring rather than something fun.

Toastersandkettles · 29/01/2026 07:26

It's a bit annoying, but at the same time what a relief that you're able to pay it! I think I would just be glad I had the means to pay that, rather than loaning/borrowing/begging/selling all my belongings for it.

Alright, no need to get so pissed OFF about it 😂

I’m actually Irish…so hth…we don’t always finish it as pissed OFF…

Satisfiedwithanapple · 29/01/2026 07:36

It would be very odd for it to ‘not bother you at all’ to spend such a large sum of money.

Yes, I’d be grateful I had the money but people who save actually get enjoyment from watching the numbers grow rather than spending it on expensive cars, big mortgages etc like most people with excess money seem to. So yeah I wouldn’t be happy.

But I would spend it if needed. I assume this is a reverse?

It’s very puzzling that this person has never heard anyone used to word ‘pissed’ to be annoyed. Utterly bizarre thread hijack.

Yep, i agree

Growlybear83 · 29/01/2026 07:47

If I had that much in savings and was able to save £1,000 per month I would thank my lucky stars and happily spend the money on something essential.

Of course I have. In American tv shows.

It's a minor derailment rather than a hijack. On a thread that OP seems uninterested in responding to anyway which always pisses people off.

Ineffable23 · 29/01/2026 07:59

I would heave a big sigh and roll my eyes and a be a bit irritated, maybe an "oh for fucks sake" as I'm quite a sweary person. And then be grateful I could afford it.

How do I know this? Because I ended up with a £4k cost immediately after a £2k cost when I had less than that in savings and that was exactly my reaction.

christmassytimeagain · 29/01/2026 07:59

I’d be extremely irritated but not concerned if that makes sense

CloakedInGucci · 29/01/2026 08:05

Mildly annoyed that the house needs work but essential work that needs to be done is part of what savings are for.

Womaninhouse17 · 29/01/2026 08:05

I'd be pleased that it proved that my savings were a good idea.

deadpan · 29/01/2026 08:07

£7k isn't that much these days for large -ish house maintenance. That could easily be window replacement, work on a dodgy roof, insulation for the whole house for a few examples. An average daily rate for a builder is £250. I'd be very happy that I had more than enough to pay for it, including any extra coats that might crop up while it's happening

I'm a person who likes saving (when I can) but can't save much, if any, now I've retired. However, I've had some big bills (up to £4000) and apart from brief irritation, I just pay them and forget about them. Sometimes you just have to.

BringBackCatsEyes · 29/01/2026 08:10

I don’t think home maintenance comes from savings, it comes from an account set aside for that sort of shit. I call it my buffer. It builds up and gets used on larger household expenses. If I had 60k on hand I’d prob have 50k in savings and 10k in the buffer.
So I wouldn’t be saving 1k a month but say £700, then £300 in the buffer.

AirborneElephant · 29/01/2026 08:11

An unexpected 7k bill would certainly ruin my day, I think anyone saying otherwise is being a bit weird. Yes, I’d be grateful I had the money to fix it but having to fork out six months of savings for something essential but boring is never nice.

Didimum · 29/01/2026 08:11

I would be a bit grumpy about it for a few days. Not because I would worry about the money, but because I’d prefer my savings to be spent on fun stuff and not boring essential repairs.

user1471548941 · 29/01/2026 08:13

We have about half that in savings and ended up with a similar sized vets bill last year. I genuinely didn’t care, I just wanted my boy to be okay. The vets saved his life and my overwhelming feeling was gratefulness that we had the means to do it and a real awareness that some people are not that fortunate.

orangewasp · 29/01/2026 08:17

It wouldn't bother me. I'd count myself fortunate to be able to afford the work; most people have much less or nothing in savings and things still go wrong in their houses.

takingthepissoutofme · 29/01/2026 08:17

Yes it would bother me, but i'd be thankful I had the money there to hand.

BringBackCatsEyes · 29/01/2026 08:18

In answer to the question, the immature would be FFS…BORING, the mature, adult me would actually be proud that as a single income household I was able to easily support my family/home.

exhaustedmum24 · 29/01/2026 08:18

I would be annoyed and begrudgingly would pay it but the savings are there so it can just be sorted.

BCBird · 29/01/2026 08:20

I'd be congratulating myself that I'd had the common sense to save for such emergencies

PurpleCoo · 29/01/2026 08:26

Mixed feelings.

Annoyed at having to spend such a large amount of money that isn't on something 'fun' or that you will get enjoyment from, especially if it's routine maintenance like the roof or a boiler.

If it's something like a nice new bathroom or kitchen that wouldn't be quite as bad, as you are likely to enjoy it more.

But also glad I don't have to worry about getting into debt or just not being able to afford something essential, or go without any holidays this year.

Funnily enough I am having to spend a similar sum, and it does sting!

But then I think I can't take it with me when I die, so I might as well spend it, and be comfortable
