How much of a problem would you consider this bill to be if you have this amount of money?

If you had 60k in savings, which are added to by around 1k a month, to what extent would you consider it a problem to pay out 7k to fix something in your home? Not cosmetic, actual work that needed to be done.

Would it ruin your day? Feel a bit shit? Would it not bother you at all?

yep I have 64k in my personal savings and if I had to pay out 7k for something I wasn’t choosing to do I’d be pissed 🤣

Off. You'd be pissed off. Unless you mean you'd drink through your annoyance.

Maybe I would…🤣🤣

Lilly11a · 29/01/2026 06:13

This is why once I'd built my savings up I had to split it and give them jobs ..

I have house maintenance savings , holiday and long term. Therefore if the house needs a job it comes out of the maintenance pot.

Long term are only if I lose my job or get sick or hopefully early retirement

Nos4r2 · 29/01/2026 06:26

It would be worse if you didn't have the money and had to take out a loan.

NoYourNameChanged · 29/01/2026 06:28

Astra53 · 28/01/2026 23:24

I would feel relieved that I had money to fix the issue. A far worse situation would be to have to do a repair and have no money to pay for it.

Edited

This. This is literally what the savings are there for! Running a house isn’t free, so it wouldn’t really be some massive shock.

RawBloomers · 29/01/2026 06:33

It would depend why it needed fixing. If it were down to some one having been an arse/lazy/careless/drunk/etc. or because it wasn't done properly in the first place, I'd be really pissed off about it. If it were just the normal cost of keeping the house in decent nick I'd think it was partly what the savings were for.

Barrenfieldoffucks · 29/01/2026 06:36

It's always boring spending money on something essential but dull, but that's what savings are for.

Katkins17 · 29/01/2026 06:39

I’ve got 11k in saving and have just had to pay my 5k tax bill…..it hurt.

Not in every part of the country 🙄

Mapletree1985 · 29/01/2026 06:42

I would feel a bit gutted but also relieved that I had the means to pay.

LemonPenguin · 29/01/2026 06:42

I think it’s a mindset thing- was that £60K meant to be ‘savings for the future’ and ideally not touched? Do you have a separate fund for unexpected/repairs? I would (and do) split my savings into pots (not in reality but I know what is earmarked for what)- so I have some for expected things that I know I’ll need money for but don’t happen monthly (Christmas, kids birthdays, car service, holidays etc), then one for house maintenance/unexpected things and one for long term savings. I just accept that the first pot always gets used and the second often does (it’s a bonus if there’s anything left in that!), but I know I have the smaller amount growing that shouldn’t need to be touched. £7k is a painful amount for sure but at least you’re not having to put it on a credit card!

CamillaMcCauley · 29/01/2026 06:47

I’d be mildly peeved to have to take a chunk out of savings but moreso pleased to have the savings to cover such a large cost.

Such as? Every Google result confirms pissed to be mean annoyed is only American and although widely understood in the UK it is an import. It's more annoying than most US imports because it isn't just that we generally use a different word but that that word itself has a different meaning.

berlinbaby2025 · 29/01/2026 06:48

It’s just one of those things, isn’t it, that you have to do when you‘re a homeowner and have no landlord to pay for this kind of stuff. I wouldn’t be thrilled about paying it but would feel consoled by having the means to easily get it all done.

Is it just you at home earning and saving?

parkezvous · 29/01/2026 06:49

DappledThings · 28/01/2026 23:00

I would consider it exactly what savings are there for and not bat an eyelid.

Same!

WonderingWanda · 29/01/2026 06:50

I've been a homeowner for a long time. It's always felt rubbish to have to spend large amounts of money on hidden maintenance so to speak. Big shiny kitchens, bathrooms and furniture are different. New boilers, roof, damp course etc much more dull and depressing. That said, I am sure it's much more palatable if you have massive savings to pay for it and it doesn't wipe out what you've got or have to go on a credit card.

I suspect this is a disagreement between you and a partner or maybe your parents not wanting to carry out home maintenance. Do the maintenance so your home isn't devalued.

KrimboBell · 29/01/2026 07:11

If it’s urgent work that needs doing, I’d be philosophical and be grateful I had the money to cover it.

Purpleturtle45 · 29/01/2026 07:12

I'd just be grateful I had the money to pay for it, with plenty left over.

bumphousebump · 29/01/2026 07:14

I a,ways grumble a bit when I have to use savings for dull stuff…but that’s is what they are for, not just holidays….

Yep. First poster nailed it!

Wouldn't bat an eyelid.

Owly11 · 29/01/2026 07:15

Depends what it was for and whether I thought it was worth it. If I was able to save £1000 a month then it can be replaced in 7 months so I would be grateful to be so comfortable.

user701 · 29/01/2026 07:16

I’d be massively annoyed. The money could have been spent on something better.

i have over £400k in my savings accounts (I know I shouldn’t and it is going be invested shortly). I currently have a plumbing issue that is going to cost circa £15k to fix. I’m massively annoyed and stressed by it.

gamerchick · 29/01/2026 07:18

I'd be happy the money was there OP. That's what savings are for.

What do you consider savings for?

What's better than a plumbing issue? That shit is right up there with a roof over your head.

Squirrelchops1 · 29/01/2026 07:20

A bit of a bummer it's not being spent on a treat lol but it is what it is. Plus being able to save £1k a month means it's not the only money I'd ever have in savings and will soon top up.

I'd be more concerned if my £60k was in a crappy account making no interest. That would piss me off more actually!
