Can I get toned and muscular without going to the gym

CocoChunnel · 28/01/2026 11:58

Ive had great results previously when using strength machines at gym but the only gym in my new town is rammed 😒

Ive downloaded the Fiit app on my phone and done 2 workouts with that so far but just wondering - will that be enough to get sculpted?

Yes I do 30 day shred everyday and my figure is transformed.

momager22 · 28/01/2026 14:44

Yes, technically you can get in great shape with fat loss and body weight only exercises.
push ups, squats, ab exercises. Add some weights or a kettlebell for different variations.
Depends on your motivation/ boredom threshold though.

RollOnSunshine · 28/01/2026 15:07

A 'toned' body needs you to have 2 things. A reasonable amount of muscle mass and low enough body fat % so that the muscle countours can be seen.

You need to lift weights for the first part and have a good nutrition plan for the second.

Anybody saying you can build muscle just as well with body weight exercise is talking rubbish.

Yea sure (I'm a PT). Just get a couple of second hand dumbbell sets, a mat and some resistance bands for home. In a perfect world an exercise bike or similar piece of cardio equipment too. Then follow some decent strength training workouts online and bike in front of the TV. Make sure you do strength training and some decent cardio weekly. Its amazing what you can achieve with bodyweight exercises and the basics of home exercise equipment.

This is great guys thanks so much! Are kettlebells better than dumbbells then?

Yes, a few bar bells and a bench aren't expensive (compared to gym membership). You can look online for exercises that suit your goals, exercise when it suits and shower in private!

Not completely true although progressive overload is a key driver of hypertrophy. Body weight exercises can be great if you leverage time under tension, for example. More time under tension = more metabolic stress + muscle fibre recruitment = hypertrophy. TUT is also great for getting a good 'feel' when working out and developing a good mind muscle connection. It's also easier on the joints and allows you to use a lower weight.

I prefer dumbells, I don't actually have any kettlebells.

Shrinkhole · 28/01/2026 16:04

I guess kettlebells are more versatile because you can swing them which is great for glutes and cardio and you can do pretty much whatever you can do with a dumbbell with a kettlebell. The downside is that they don’t come in a lot of different weights especially not small ones so you might need eg an 8 and a 12kg kettlebell and some 5kg dumbbells.

I never go to the gym. I do a mixture of ballet barre, pilates, yoga and treadmill running and I'm really toned. People automatically i assume i lift weights, which I don't. I'm 55.

I second barre. I’m out of shape right now but when I was doing 30 mins a day my ass was amazing!

Would you mind sharing how you break that down? What does an average week look like to you? TIA!

I'm very muscular from a mix of dumbbells and callisthenics. You want to make sure your weights are challenging though. I use dumbbells 9kg (each not combined) and I have a pull-up bar for pull-ups, chin-ups and dead hangs. Hanging is actually a tremendous exercise. Resistance bands are handy too.

I do have a gym membership for swimming, sauna, etc. I do use the machines sometimes, last year I had an injury that made me unstable with free weights, so the machines were helpful. But you can get completely jacked at home.

Sure ...i run everyday for between 45 and 60 minutes in the morning.

In the late afternoon/early evening I do a rotation of pilates (Tracey Mallett), yoga (Shiva Rae), ballet barre, and sometimes Tracey Anderson. These generally last between 45 to 60 minutes.

I have been doing a version of this for years and it works for me as I like to workout alone from home.
Hope this is helpful!

What about all those really ripped guys in calisthenics videos online that are always doing muscle ups, pistol squats and handstand press ups? They look to me like they have a lot of muscle. I guess it also encourages you to keep body fat low if you are lifting your own body weight. You can do some pretty advanced progressions just with body weight but a lot of it needs more mobility and balance than I’ve got. I don’t think I will ever be able to pistol squat.

I train at home too now .
I bought dumbbells , resistance bands .
I think it’s all about consistency to be fair .
You’re going to see results if you stick with it .
Diet has to be correct aswel .
I like Annie Murtaigh videos.
I do her 7 minute boxercise work out every night for my arms , I started at 1 kg weight, it’s about 3 lbs , now I use 2 kg which is in & around 5 lbs .
Who doesn’t have 7 minutes 🤷🏻‍♀️.
I train glutes/ legs 3 days per week .
Mix of lunges with dumbbells, single leg deadlifts with dumbbells, & crab walks with resistance bands .
I hate squats , don’t do them .

My brother has never done weights. He only does martial arts and calisthenics. He's totally ripped and very muscular.

Martial arts is just as good as lifting weights, if not better, if you do a lot / practice them with a lot of skill and frequency.

I used to do military fitness, we generally only used our own bodyweight and I was really muscular at that point. Obv we did cardio and my body weight was low but never really used weights. I get that it is probably the extreme fitness class so can't really replicate at home 😂

Evaporateandlisten · 28/01/2026 17:37

I like Cat Jane Fitness coaching (she’s on instagram). I find her workouts really effective and her check ins are really helpful.
I’ve noticed a huge difference physically but also mentally.
I have dumbbells, kettlebells and bands.

I like the gym too but find it easy to make excuses not to go. At home I can just be in my underwear! I use the gym mostly for classes.

A lot of people trying to sell you fitness plans lie about how they achieved their physique?
