To think we shouldn’t have to contribute to soch if we don’t intend to use it?

For example, I don’t want a state pension - so I should surely be able to opt out of soch based contributions percentage. And just pay a lesser amount to cover anything I do take advantage of.

I haven't been to the GPs in 10 years, do I get a discount for the next 10 years? My brother never had children, surely he and his wife are due a huge refund, no antenatal care, birth etc to pay for not to mention 12+ years of schooling.

Don't be silly.

Where has anyone stated a refund? You’re late to the thread and trying to be funny. It’s failed.

'think you’ll find I know how to spell it the MOST'😂

Trumpian, wasn't it 😂

2ndtimefinances · 27/01/2026 22:49

I have no idea what Soch/Sosh is & your explanation doesn't fit the letters used so am very confused.
But do I get a rebate as my husband died at 46 he had worked since he was 12 (whilst at school) & hasn't used the NHS for ages & obviously won't claim any state pension - due to the fact I was younger I don't get a widow's pension.
Oh I limited the number of children I had as well to what I could afford (would have loved more) - can I get a rebate there as well please as I see lots of people having children that the state helps support.
It's ridiculous & the costs to administer would be more than anyone actually saved - but also the idea is just abhorrent

MasterBeth · 27/01/2026 22:49

I now think that the OP was attempting to write the first syllable of "social", but I'm not sure how I would try and spell it.

Not Soch (rhymes with notch) or Sosh (rhymes with nosh).

So...how?

Soesh?

Social Securtity contributions. Prior to 2001 this was their name, and therefore how I choose to word it, as I have done for the entirety of my life.

Tity-based stuff aside, are you pronouncing ‘soch’ (or ‘sosh’) to rhyme with ‘gauche’ or with ‘gosh’?

TheCompactPussycat · 27/01/2026 22:50

slozenger · 27/01/2026 22:30

Well I think you’ll find I know how to spell it the MOST as I’m the one who used the word first. I’ve spelt it both ways for those who struggle with comprehension.

"Soch. Have you heard of the word soch? It's a beautiful word. The greatest word. Nobody had ever heard of the word soch before but I found the word."

Calm down Donald!

Boudy · 27/01/2026 22:50

YourJustOrca · 27/01/2026 22:50

Why don’t you want a state pension?

The correct phrase is actually "from the gecko", OP.

How is a person who pays tax not a contributor? Insulting to say the least.

Many people are not net contributors. The estimate is you have to pay 17k alone in taxes per year to be a net contributor.

If you earn 32 grand and have 3 kids, you're taking more out of the system than you're putting in.

If you earn 150 grand with no kids, you're taking less out of the system than you put in.

The purpose of the tax system we have is so those who are working in lower paid, necessary jobs, and having children, for example, are not at a significant disadvantage for doing so. Thus UC that tops up wages, payments towards childcare, etc. Its not a perfect system but it's better than every man or woman for himself like you seem to think.

My gran called it soch in her stamp era. So it’s been around for longer than yours.

It’s been called National Insurance since it was introduced in 1911…

Well I defiantly am a net contribution because I earn over 17k

some of you call a chip shop the CHIPPER or
the CHIZZER? It’s regional

I think child based stuff should remain something we all provide for, to ensure low income families are not affected.

But for example a non NHS user who does not want a state pension should be able to opt out of soch payments imo.

Which private ambulance will you call when you have an accident and which private hospital will they take you too? And which non-NHS funded medical school will your nurses, Drs, etc have attended?

"Soch" is a really bad attempt at trying to replicate that sound. What words are spelled -och and pronounced like the first bit of social?

bumptybum · 27/01/2026 22:54

slozenger · 27/01/2026 22:10

Well I don’t really want to pay for that either as I won’t be having one so feels quite unfair.

Did you have children? Use the NHS? Ever be in receipt of any kind of benefit? Use government funded services?

there are people out there who won’t have used some of these things but they paid.

Surely if it is an abbreviation for Social it should be Soc'???
But I understood that to be the old term for the 'dole' & other associated benefits of the 80's, which are very different to the current UC system

Whaaaaat?

of course you’re a contributor if you pay tax. But it’s doubtful you’re a NET CONTRIBUTOR. Ie you’ve paid at least enough in contributions to fully cover the cost of services you’ve utilized over the course of your lifetime.
