To think we shouldn’t have to contribute to soch if we don’t intend to use it?

For example, I don’t want a state pension - so I should surely be able to opt out of soch based contributions percentage. And just pay a lesser amount to cover anything I do take advantage of.

@slozenger your comprehension skills are poor, to be a net contributor you would need to pay more then £17k in tax per annum, not earn £17 yourself!

But they're definitely defiant!
Painfully so.

Late to the thread, but just chiming in to point out that the chizzer is where the chips come with "special sauce". As any fule kno.

Of course you do…. I believe you, millions wouldn’t.

Given you don’t understand basic maths, it’s highly unlikely you’re a net contributor.

JennyWren5 · 28/01/2026 00:49

slozenger · 27/01/2026 22:13

It’s self explanatory

What does it mean? I’ve never heard it before and Google doesn’t seem to think it’s an English word either.
You are more than welcome to opt out of paying a state pension - just don’t pay NI, or give your state pension to charity when you receive it.

Why wouldn’t you want to receive a state pension though? Are you that rich that it wouldn’t make a difference?

Your post proposes that you don't pay your full whack into society. Because you will choose not to take part of what you pay for. Is that right?

If you take a pension or not is immaterial. You have benefited from those before you who have payed their full whack. The teachers who taught you, the doctors who looked after you, probably the parents who raised you.

I get a bit fed up of those people who think tax is a burden. Tax is part of the price we pay for living in a decent society.

If someone really doesn't want to be part of that society, they should go and live off grid, with no roads, schools health care of education from birth.

Well I’m not going there am I.

  1. Don’t want to
  2. Self treat myself for 40 years and hasn’t failed me.
  3. Will not go out if unwell

What happens if you go out when well, but still need an ambulance? It will still cost money. You don't have to give consent if you're unconscious.

Hi there, can you explain what soch means? Never heard it before and Google doesn’t know what it is either.

viques · 28/01/2026 01:01

slozenger · 27/01/2026 22:18

I never said I wanted to fully opt out, just a discount for what I won’t be using as I cost less to run.

But that could change. You could for example go postal and kill someone and end up in prison for twenty years costing the country many more times the cost of your pension. Or you could be in an accident resulting in you being in a vegetative state for years , again costing a lot more than your state pension. If someone dies just before they reach pensionable age then the pension they would have drawn goes back into the system, why should you be allowed to opt out of that action?

I read an article the other day about the quarter of a million graduates under the age of thirty who have decided they are too frail to work because they are “anxious” so are claiming benefits. I don’t particularly relish contributing out of my taxed pension to them sitting at home, not working, not contributing financially , not repaying their student loans etc etc, but accept that that is the system that has been collectively agreed and to sanction them would be difficult, costly and would hurt those genuinely unable to work. It is called being part of the system , and despite its faults it more or less works for most of us. I for one don’t want to see a system that is already under strain placed under greater stress by people who think it is like the pick and mix sweetie counter.

'Soch' is in the Scottish dialect, its used as an exclamation for when you find out how much of your tax went on keeping pensioners alive

surely you're mis-spelling "sheesh"?!
😂

Oftenaddled · 28/01/2026 01:04

The assumption is that lots of people die before getting their pension - and of course their families don't get a refund. So individuals opting out would just be in the same boat. There's no money out there with your name on it

emilysquest · 28/01/2026 01:05

I have only read part of the thread, but just going on the title, what is "soch"? I have worked in healthcare with socially disadvantaged people my whole life and I have never heard of it. It is definitely not "self-explanatory". If it is some kind of regional term, you do realise that this site has quite a diverse and geographically wide readership?

ruethewhirl · 28/01/2026 01:07

OP, you might want to locate your nearest dictionary and familiarise yourself with the meaning of the term 'society'.

emilysquest · 28/01/2026 01:07

I dont even live in the UK any more but because my business is there I still pay taxes there. As I should.

TBH, there is NO part of this entire thread where you do explain basic math.

Just lots and lots of places where you astound us all with an amazing lack of knowledge/ awareness, and leave us incredulous at the notion that you are currently being paid over £75k/year by somebody, for doing something...

I think child based stuff should remain something we all provide for, to ensure low income families are not affected.

But for example a non NHS user who does not want a state pension should be able to opt out of soch payments imo.

Oh sure, sure, I will pay for your life choices my entire child-free life but you don’t need to worry about people like me at all? What?

Lambington · 28/01/2026 01:24

Who / what is Soch? Is this typo?

GaIadriel · 28/01/2026 01:33

What about people that earn too much to qualify for childcare etc? Should they be exempt?

GaIadriel · 28/01/2026 01:36

slozenger · 27/01/2026 22:13

No I said that child based stuff should be something we all contribute to already.

I don't really want to pay for people's kids though. There's already far too many humans on this planet, most of which live in poverty.

slozenger · 27/01/2026 22:33

Ok the discussion is now finished! Stop

I think you’ve misunderstood how the internet and MN works, as well as some of the basics of economics, taxation and social policy.

As you were.

askmenow · 28/01/2026 01:56

slozenger · 27/01/2026 22:15

No but it would be a good idea to keep something like that on my ID

Are you mad? If you were in an accident who do you think would come to your aid. An ambulance paid for by all of us ! An emergency operation to save your life or repair your body and an intensive care bed to restore you to health hopefully! Nutcase!

askmenow · 28/01/2026 01:58

And I believe we should all invest in other peoples children residing in our country.
They are the future!

Well I think you’ll find I know how to spell it the MOST as I’m the one who used the word first. I’ve spelt it both ways for those who struggle with comprehension.

It was never sosh /soch..it was ssc exactly what is said social security contributions. Where you got the sosh is a lot of old tosh I am being polite

Why would I get hit by a car? Realistically that would not happen .

Depends. Where do you work? 🤔
