Am I cheap for never tipping delivery drivers?!

Just curious to know if I’m BU.

Had a chat about Deliveroo etc the other day and a friend always trips the delivery driver about £5 every time she orders. Me and my other friend said we never do, you get charged service fees, delivery fees etc and pay higher for the food. A £15 meal can end up costing £22.

I have tipped before on Christmas Eve but usually I don’t.

Do you think this is bad or do you think it’s fine?

I tip Deliveroo and Tesco/other grocery deliveries £3-£5. Particularly if the weather is horrendous. If large item of furniture being delivered also tip. Postie gets a Christmas tip but not every delivery driver as we are often out when they deliver, or they leave it in the porch and are off. I’ll

Why tip one and not the other? Genuinely interested because I can't really see the difference. Is it maybe because they've had a longer journey from the restaurant to you than a postie doing lots in one area?

Big company deliveries are in vans, not bikes or mopeds

Interesting thanks!

purplecorkheart · 27/01/2026 16:47

I tip. Normally only get delivery from one of the Chinese Restaurants and their delivery person is really lovely. It is a tough job and I know the restaurant pays them very little per delivery.

IngridBergmannn · 27/01/2026 16:41

I never tip anyone at all. If they're doing the job, they're getting paid for it. If they don't like the pay, they are welcome to find another job.

That easy is it, in this current climate?

MrsKateColumbo · 27/01/2026 16:50

I always tip the delivery person. They are bringing me delicious food and are on very low wages. Round here they are often uni students

Dinosweetpea · 27/01/2026 16:57

No, I have never tipped any delivery person. I pay delivery charges 🤷🏻‍♀️

SpryLilacSnake · 27/01/2026 16:39

No, tipping culture is bizarre. You paid for a service. In an ideal world we'd all just boycott anywhere that doesn't pay their staff the legal minimum rather than top it up ourselves.

They are paid the legal minimum, I think the point is that NMW is not very good pay. That’s why people tip.

I live in the US so tip, never tipped when I lived in the UK and don’t know anyone who did tbh. So perhaps this is a fairly recent phenomenon?

DinoLil · 27/01/2026 17:01

I only tip deliveroo or uber eats drivers if they are regular ones that I've got to know and have been delivering for several years. The ones that stop and chat for a bit, ask after me and the dog, I ask after them and their families. Sometimes they are the only people I have a conversation with for days on end.

The ones that only turn up once, are a bit abrupt, rude or just knock, dump my order on the doorstep before I can even open the door never get a tip.

fussychica · 27/01/2026 17:01

I never tip but I'd be hard pressed to do so, even if I wanted to, they are usually back in the van before I've even opened the door!

LostThestral · 27/01/2026 17:02

I don't tip delivery drivers. We did we start going round tipping people for just doing their jobs?

NotThatSerious · 27/01/2026 17:03

I very rarely tip in the UK.

Createausername1970 · 27/01/2026 17:08

I tip if it's a local takeaway delivery from a Chinese or Indian etc. They usually do free delivery to local area, so I haven't specifically paid for delivery. So a couple of quid is OK as it's saved me the bother of driving there and faffing with parking etc.

I don't tip Amazon etc..... I would be flinging money at a disappearing van!

I did put £10 in a Christmas card for my milkman.

I usually do a couple of quid to taxi and hairdresser.

I don't really know why I tip some and not others. I have wondered this before.

myglowupera · 27/01/2026 17:15

I sometimes tip uber taxi drivers when they really stand out. Eg one brought back my big bottle of Vimto for me that I left behind in his boot after I’d been shopping, and another put his Cocomelon playlist on when my DD was crying on the way to school. 😄

As for food deliveries, I’ve used uber eats many times but not tipped anyone. I’ve let the pizza man from the local takeaway keep the change though.

Redpeach · 27/01/2026 16:11

I always do, theyre doing a hard enough job on low pay

So are many others, such as shop assistants, refuse collectors, office cleaners. They don't get tips. It's not that hard riding or driving around delivering food.

boulevardofbrokendreamss · 27/01/2026 17:27

I don’t tip. America sent me over the edge when mil said we hat to to tip 35 per cent. No. Pay your staff.

ShyMaryEllen · 27/01/2026 17:27

No. Everything now is paid for in advance, including the delivery charge. Before that (paying cash on the doorstep) I would round up, but now I don’t. There is the cost of the food, a service charge, delivery fee, a charge for using a card, sometimes even a charge for a cheap plastic bag (knotted tightly so it can’t be reused). Why would I add to that?

Amazon and similar couriers often leave parcels on the step, so there is no chance to tip, and Sainsburys drivers stand back and watch me bend and stretch to fill bags from pallets. What could they expect to get a tip for doing?

Do you mean you'd tip the drivers from smaller companies, but not the ones from big companies?

(Sorry, not being argumentative - just dim! We don't have any bikes or mopeds delivering here)

Ladygodalmighty · 28/01/2026 22:54

I order a takeaway once a month when all the family are here, 12 of us. They charge £3.50 to deliver and £1 admin charge. I give the delivery girl/guy a £5 tip which they seem really happy with. It works out at less than a £1 per person to cover all the that but if its for only one or two people that's costly!

purpleflowersfordays · 28/01/2026 22:56

Deliveroo is expensive so I wouldn’t want to increase my bill any further. I very rarely use it due to increased cost of goods so I only tend to use it if I’m ill or if the car has been in the garage and I don’t want to walk to the shops.

angelcake20 · 28/01/2026 23:06

DS did Deliveroo for a few weeks one uni holiday (he then dislocated his shoulder so couldn’t ride his bike). I was amazed how many people tipped; I never have. I don’t really agree with tipping and think people should be paid a fair wage for the job.

CluelessAboutBiology · 28/01/2026 23:27

If it’s the local independent Chinese/Indian takeaway that doesn’t charge extra for delivery, I tip £2 or £3 (for an order that’s up to about £35). However, Dominoes add a delivery fee so I don’t tip the driver as well).

Am currently abroad and have been surprised to see pots with “tips” written on them next to cash registers in shops. As in shops where I walk around choosing the items and take them to the till myself to pay. Not sure what the customers are supposed to be tipping for.

I would never trip my delivery driver, I think their job is hard enough anyway. I would seriously reconsider that friendship.

Haha what??? 😄

I do this too: tip takeaway delivery people, but not for other deliveries (ie packages or the supermarket delivery).

Maybe it’s because we think of takeaway drivers as being part of the gig economy, out in all weather on bikes and scooters. Whereas, say, driving the Tesco van seems like a steadier job and more comfortable. But on reflection I’m not sure that makes sense as a reason… I think Amazon drivers are probably also part of the gig economy. So would probably make sense to tip them like I tip the Deliveroo people!

Or not tip any of them. You've already paid a delivery charge.
