To be despairing at the rain

It’s just so miserable. We never ever seem to just get a few days of rain, once it starts it goes on for weeks or even months at a time. We are on day 14 of rain with very little let up, high winds and this shit is forecast to go on for another 3 solid weeks if the Met Office is right.

I have small children and a dog and my life seems to be cleaning pram wheels, washing the dog’s feet, trying to wrangle my kids into/out of wet weather gear, and running between places trying not to get completely soaked. The mud is awful and gets everywhere. It’s making my house smell.

I just find it so depressing

Yet even in the east where you get barely any rain it is raining constantly!

This is what I was about to say! Rural Lincolnshire. The rain. The mud. The flooded roads. The wet dogs. The muddy horses. The flood alerts, every few days. Plus, it's Lincolnshire. It's beyond miserable.

Winteriscoming80 · 27/01/2026 07:20

I’m in South Yorkshire,we have had constant rain for months, guess what though…we still have a hosepipe ban, apparently it’s the wrong type of rain!

frozendaisy · 27/01/2026 07:23

I used to think, it’s just one wet season no worries, but it seems that the climate change predictions have arrived sooner than expected.

Clefable · 27/01/2026 07:25

It hasn’t even got properly light here for days, there’s so much rain that there is flooding everywhere, the garden is unusable, the high winds make it really unpleasant to be out in and I think we’ve had a weather warning pretty much every day for weeks. Today is one for wind and rain yet again!

I suppose on the plus side at least you don't live in Hull which is also totally rainy. 🤣

Typtoe · 27/01/2026 07:30

I was feeling a bit meh yesterday but then I saw a reel on social media with a dog in the rain that said remember when you feel like you can't be arsed, that half an hour a day that your dog gets to go out is the best half an hour of their day. Which immediately guilted me into taking them and I did actually feel better for having got some exercise and fresh air! I agree it is miserable but I think we have to make do as there's nothing we can do about it. I live in the South and when MIL from the very far north west came to visit last summer, she barely stepped outside because the heat was understandably too much for her.

Ginmonkeyagain · 27/01/2026 07:31

I'm trying to frame it positively. We had a worryingly dry Spring and Summer last year, so at least the resevoirs will be refilled!

What climate change seems to be bringing us is heavier bursts of rain. Our 1930s rain water deains by our doors are certainly not built for it. Last week I had to take a broom to standing rainwater to prevet it flowing over the threshhold of our back door.

CantGetworse · 27/01/2026 07:33

I woke up at 5 am to the sound of torrential rain so decided to turn the alarm off and I’m not even leaving the house today. It’s a very long walk to school, dc all have colds and I’ve been very unwell for a few months after an incident so just thought no can’t do this today I don’t want to drag us all out in the cold and wet. Light rain no issue but this is torrential still and I’m just not up to it.

I have a photo of my garden from summer last year, on my phone screen saver. Beautiful flowers, memories of times to come. It really cheers me up on these rainy, grey days.

Also it’s getting lighter each day.

That’s my way of getting through it!

I’ve just looked at the sunrise times where I live. It’ll finally be sunrise at 7am (when I usually leave the house) on 21 February. Then the clocks go forward and it takes another month to get back there 😢

Marvellousmeadows · 27/01/2026 07:39

It’s forecast sunny spells here in Wales tomorrow, let’s hope the weather forecast is right 🌞

Imagine forming your whole personality around what goes on externally, outside of your house, that you cannot control.

Honestly, 90% of you on this thread should do yourselves a favour and emigrate. Then you can complain instead about how "oppressive" the heat is.

What a ridiculous post.

I mean imagine forming your whole personality around getting spiteful about the posts of complete strangers on the internet moaning about the weather that you can’t control 🙄

BitOutOfPractice · 27/01/2026 07:43

@hopefullyme I saw the first iris peeping up yesterday in the park. It made me smile. Spring WILL come.

Hopeyoudontspotme · 27/01/2026 07:43

I was just thinking our back yard- that’s admittedly north ish facing, hasn’t dried out for months. It’s desperate for a good sweep and tidy . Looks awful.

DogAnxiety · 27/01/2026 07:48

I have a long haired mud loving dog, and I am heartily sick of it. The car is filthy, the house is filthy, the dog is filthy, and I’ve nearly come a cropper so many times in the slippery mud. It creates extra work which I can ill afford as I already work about 50 hours a week. The Pollyannas can piss right off!

Ah what luck you happen to know all the PPs in real life, so you can comment on their whole personalities!

It’s coming to something in this country when moaning about the weather is unacceptable 😂

And yes, climate change is driving wetter winters.

Runnersandtoms · 27/01/2026 08:03

My daughter lives in the West Country and is really fed up with it. She hasn't got a car (or much money) and biking to the supermarket in the rain is no fun so she's basically run out of food. Chucking it here today in Kent too but yesterday was fine (but cold).

Playingvideogames · 27/01/2026 08:03

but the guilt is so real when the kids come in from school and we are confined to the house. All I seem to be doing is managing arguments, trying to cook and clean, make snacks, battle homework and pray for bedtime. It feels sad and I’m back to work next month and it just feels like the last three months haven’t been anywhere near as enjoyable as it would have been to have the kids.off over summer (last summer I had a three month old and was running on fumes

Oh God yes, after school is just the worst. My youngest is 3 and my oldest is 7, if it’s dry they play outside with the patio chalks and outdoor toys or ride their bikes. Being indoors treading the same patch of carpet for 3+ hours after getting home every day is driving me demented. They’re constantly fighting and throwing things, they’re like caged animals.

Let me guess, we should be ‘baking and pottering with a hot chocolate’ 😆

Don’t forget snuggling @Playingvideogames Are you doing enough snuggling and getting Cosy?

These mn smugglers give me the rage.

ViciousCurrentBun · 27/01/2026 08:15

It’s the greyness of it all for me. I welcome a bright very cold day with blue skies, they are the winter days that are nice.

justasking111 · 27/01/2026 08:16

Kids cooped up all day in school need to run free afterwards otherwise it's hellish until bedtime. You can't go to the park because the equipment is wet and it's flooded. 😞

Delatron · 27/01/2026 08:19

Oopsylazy · 26/01/2026 23:24

I’ve made dh promise me that when the youngest leaves for uni we can spend the whole of January somewhere hot.

I’ve even made him sign a contract 😂

I’m going to do the same.

I get so annoyed with people who say the like winter in this country. This is the reality. It can’t be dressed up in any way to be pleasant.

If it was cold, crisp and sunny I’d have no problem with it. But it never is

justasking111 · 27/01/2026 08:21

We used to go away February half term with DC that helped.

Me too. Who snuggles for months? What about commuting, taking kids out, taking dogs out. It’s miserable and there’s no argument that it isn’t.

The only time I am under a blanket in the day is if I’m ill. So they can stick their snuggling!

Theredjellybean · 27/01/2026 08:22

Another Cornwall resident here ...I'm so sick of rain.
I usually love winter but where have the cold crisp days gone ?
It's raining again this morning and I hardly slept due to howling winds
And dogs....don't get me started...

Oh God the snuggling 🙄 my kids will let me hug them for a few seconds but don’t stay still long enough to ‘snuggle’ unless unwell.

I think people who post stuff like this either don’t have children, or their children are aged 20+ and they’ve totally forgotten how non-compliant and busy toddlers and small children actually are.
