To be despairing at the rain

It’s just so miserable. We never ever seem to just get a few days of rain, once it starts it goes on for weeks or even months at a time. We are on day 14 of rain with very little let up, high winds and this shit is forecast to go on for another 3 solid weeks if the Met Office is right.

I have small children and a dog and my life seems to be cleaning pram wheels, washing the dog’s feet, trying to wrangle my kids into/out of wet weather gear, and running between places trying not to get completely soaked. The mud is awful and gets everywhere. It’s making my house smell.

I just find it so depressing

Rain is one thing, but when it's followed by sunshine it's not bad. It's the endless grey skies for days on end that get me down. We haven't had a single ray of sunshine for weeks now. Even when the rain stops, the cloud is still thick and dark hanging over us and blocking out the light.

Agree completely. The sky has just been a flat dark grey now for weeks. The wind is howling and my kids are in a very light sleep as it’s so noisy, I just heard something blow down the road.

It’s driving me mad.

Not where I live in UK. We had a lovely summer last year !

So happy for you!

I’m in Devon it’s just never ending! I have dogs and the constant mud and then wet hair sticking to everything is awful.

chillidoritto · 26/01/2026 22:48

It’s January! I’m not sure what people expect! None of us like it, but it does happen once a year whether we like it or not,

Last winter was really wet and we ended up having a cracking spring and summer. Ever autumn wasn’t too bad. It has to rain sometimes and I’d rather it did in in the winter!

BitOutOfPractice · 26/01/2026 22:49

I was here to say the same about the flat grey drabness too. I don’t mind a cold day, just give me some blue sky and sunshine. The greyness is really getting me down this year.

It doesn’t just happen ‘once a year’ though. It’s raining all the sodding time. It’s never ending.

I’m a person who actually prefers the colder months of the year but even I am struggling with this never ending rain! School drop off / pick up with a toddler in tow is an absolute nightmare these days and I’m dying for a day where I can just take them to a playground to burn off some energy instead of a softplay covered in grime!!

hellswelshy · 26/01/2026 22:53

I was just thinking the same thing, so over the rain! My bedroom is in the attic too so the rain sound is amplified 😥 But yes agree with pp, its not just the rain but the grey! And is also very cold here in Wales...waaaaah!

Yes! It’s winter! Which I also hate due to the dark. But better days will come.

ThestoriesIcouldtellyou · 26/01/2026 23:01

Maybe it makes you feel better to know that I live in central/southern Italy and we've had the same grey sullen sky all January, the temperature never gets above 5 and it rains every day with an icy wind. I went to London for the weekend and there the weather was significantly better than here. I feel like I've hardly left the house this month.

MNLurker1345 · 26/01/2026 23:03

I have a photo of my garden from summer last year, on my phone screen saver. Beautiful flowers, memories of times to come. It really cheers me up on these rainy, grey days.

Also it’s getting lighter each day.

That’s my way of getting through it!

RazedBeds · 26/01/2026 23:04

That's odd. I am in the North West and it doesn't feel like it's been especially wet this month at all. We usually get the brunt of shit weather!

Yes. I don't really care much about the rain. It's the endless 'wetness'. Everywhere is just so wet and muddy, and there isn't enough sunshine to evaporate it and the water table is too high for it to go anywhere.

It's also so grey. The fog and greyness is the most miserable part. It's been quite dark during the day the last couple of days.

TheUsualChaos · 26/01/2026 23:08

It's horrendous here tonight. This is the worst January I can remember for a good while. It's just storm after storm. I've normally done a fair bit in the garden by now but it's all but flooded and trying to do any work with it so waterlogged will probably do more harm than good. Our roof has also starting leaking which has never happened before. Thoroughly fed up of it.

I don't necessarily disagree but I've been wondering more and more lately why as a country we build things completely unsuitable for our climate given we do get so.much rain every year. I'm mainly thinking of play parks. Why are they mostly on grass and full of metal that gets slippery when wet? They're as good as unusable for so many days of the year. Is it beyond the realms of imagination to have a cover over them?

pippapipps · 26/01/2026 23:10

Today was relentless non stop and what really annoys me with the rain is not being able to do as much washing the baskets are overflowing

twosandwiches · 26/01/2026 23:10

I hate having a dog in winter. I dont mind the walking, it’s just the having to hose him
Down when we get home. Stopping him moving, then stopping him shaking mud all over the utility room, two towels worth of damp - it’s so much hard work.

I used to do regular 10k walks before we got a dog - several times a week. And I could get home and just walk into the house like a normal human.

im never getting another dog - the weather is a large part of this.

Winter doesn't automatically mean wind and rain. Winter is just cold. You can have sunny days in winter. We just haven't had as many especially this side of Christmas, because we're constantly getting battered by low pressure systems one after the other from over the Atlantic so a huge amount of moisture getting tipped over us day after day.
I think the south have had it worse.

Do you have a tumble dryer? I invested in a good heat pump one recently and it's a game changer.

Oopsylazy · 26/01/2026 23:13

I’m just trying to get through January without throwing myself off a bridge! I hate January (and February) and could just hibernate til March. I’m sleeping loads - dh thinks I’m turning into a cat.

It’s not necessarily very rainy here (NW) but freezing and dull dull dull.

I remember the days of small children and dogs and doing the school run in it and the mud!- you have my sympathies, I can now at least stay home (but this causes its own problems).

MsAnnFrope · 26/01/2026 23:14

You’re not wrong. I work outdoors and love being outside and even I’m pissing sick of it.
yes I know there are signs of spring etc etc but this wind, rain, grey combination on repeat can just fuck off!

Soonenough · 26/01/2026 23:18

Rain is bad. Cold is bad . But on top of all that there is incredible wind here . So many things broken or fallen over. Howling noises at night . Endless washing, bored kids and I find myself eating too much these days . The worst part is that there doesnt seem to be an end anytime soon .

Oopsylazy · 26/01/2026 23:24

I’ve made dh promise me that when the youngest leaves for uni we can spend the whole of January somewhere hot.

I’ve even made him sign a contract 😂

Yes, the clean up multiple times a day is so tedious. Not even just from walks, if I take my eye off the ball and she goes trotting off down the garden then she comes back filthy at the moment. I hate it!

But this got me thinking, I reckon there are an awful lot of dogs who just aren't being walked lately or just a very quick walk to do a poo. I am definitely seeing less dogs out and about than usual. With more dog owners than ever in the UK I think a lot of people just aren't prepared to go out in this weather or even have the gear for it.

justasking111 · 26/01/2026 23:37

North west of Wales. You wake up not knowing if it's time to get up or the middle of the night. The dogs don't stir. Wet dogs every day. We're all fed up here.
