Words and phrases that drive you insane...

1000 replies

Ducksbehindthesofa · 26/01/2026 11:25

Certain words (usually nonsense or pseudowords) and phrases really grate on me, sometimes to the extent I don't bother reading the rest of a narrative if I stumble across a word or phrase on my hit list, halfway through something.

There are plenty, but a few to kick off:

Holibobs. It's not even an abbreviation for goodness sake.

Chillax. Just why?

"You do you" - this seems to be the in phrase at the moment, especially with the younger generation. It always sounds vaguely condescending to me

Chrimbo. Please, no

Nom nom nom. This one is right up there with holibobs!

Your turn......

Looking again at the post to which I responded, everyone who has any type of condition, disability, illness etc, seems to need to be 'suffering' with or from it - just no! We might suffer sometimes but normally we just live with these things.

I find "living with [condition]" wanky. Just say you/they have [condition] and we can fill in the blank that they aren't dead.

I'm baffled, everyone here in Ireland says "can I get", how is it in any way rude?

Yep. Same in Scotland but it comes up time and time again on here.
Apparently we're meant to say "Please may I have?" 🤣🤣🤣

ThePrecisionsifthisislove · 28/01/2026 09:09

That reminds me of chewing the fat
The hands on your cheeks waggling fingers and using exaggerated posh accent.

NamingNoNames · 28/01/2026 09:10

@RaraRachael , why is that so funny?

Picky bits / dinner

incorrect use of myself / yourself - drives me mad. Eg 'my son and myself went to...'

Amen. “I’m going to invite yourselves to this meeting”. “If you could send the forms over to myself”. Unbearable.

Nordiclaura007 · 28/01/2026 09:15

Kind of and sort of

I feel like I’m the only person who has noticed this because I’ve never heard anyone else ever mention it on these types of threads..
but i really can’t bear the mispronunciation of “fulfil” where the middle “l” is silent so it sounds like “fufil”. Only heard it on online though, never in real life.

Vibe
Vibes
Vibing

Vibing being the worst.

Arghhhhhhh

This! It sounds rude to me.

I also hate “this” almost as much 😂

'Raw dogging' now being used in polite conversation
'Ick'
'Reach out'
'Unalive'

Bored of, autocorrect using similar sounding words that don't make sense in context, eg pear instead of pair, American spelling when its set to UK spelling. It's not useful for pupils who decide to go to college or university where its important to use the correct wording rather than relying on phonectics. But dad used to teach me to spell when I was about 4 and also he taught me the meaning of words. By the time we we started school both of us could write our names and addresses, knew how to wash our hands properly etc. I think we were lucky in that dad happily let mum manage the bills whilst he did an extra job and she did little jobs whilst we were at school. She met us from school and then often took us shopping with her, walking home so we could go to the playground. When dad came home we had a pudding with him after he had had his tea. We ate sitting at a table, with a clean cloth. Mum always said you didn't need expensive China or glass provided its was clean and glasses polished. We never used chipped crockery etc. I realise now how lucky we were that our parents were happy together and gave us a good start
Both of us went to what remain outstanding schools but these were state schools. When you see the Wales family it's clear they're comfortable with either parent.Apparently the Princess has little phrases she uses to prompt them during official events so they know when to stand, and when the National Anthemn is played etc.

Back to literally, these are examples I've seen today:
'Literally reading this as i was ...'
'... where there are literally no consequences.'
'...with one exception that was literally just ...'
'...i would quite literally tell him to grow up ...'
'Then literally one day it all...'
'I literally do everything right but...'
'No it isn't: it's literally right there in ...'
'...are literally full of ...'
'he would literally...'
'... until we literally had no choice..'
'...there is literally nothing you can do about it.'

As one MNer posted:
"But literally, the literal term that literally frustrates me to the literal ends of the earth are those who use the term "literally", when they literally should know that it's literally the wrong term to use in literally most situations. Literally!"

Unless your 6 years old NOBODY should be using the word 'tummy' instead of stomach! 🙄
When and why did the word stomach become unacceptable anyway? You can hear and read the childish 'tummy' used everywhere and often, I hear it on the radio and TV, read it in books and newspaper articles, it's even used on the NHS website and worst of all is hearing adult men say it! UGH!! 🤮

*You're. (Aarrgghh!)

"My happy place" really makes me cringe.
