Words and phrases that drive you insane...

Certain words (usually nonsense or pseudowords) and phrases really grate on me, sometimes to the extent I don't bother reading the rest of a narrative if I stumble across a word or phrase on my hit list, halfway through something.

There are plenty, but a few to kick off:

Holibobs. It's not even an abbreviation for goodness sake.

Chillax. Just why?

"You do you" - this seems to be the in phrase at the moment, especially with the younger generation. It always sounds vaguely condescending to me

Chrimbo. Please, no

Nom nom nom. This one is right up there with holibobs!

Your turn......

Mine is…

’I was today years old when’

Uuugghhhhh.

JengaCupboard · 26/01/2026 14:11

An American-ism filtering in, but the (in my mind) incorrect and over-use of 'bunch'

I just picked a bunch of flowers - yes
I just drank a bunch of water - STFU - No.

Incorrect use of 'gifted'.

😮😮😮😮

I go out for coffee once a month with a group of ladies - we are all in our 60s. I still put “coffee with girls” in my calendar.

Rosie2120 · 26/01/2026 14:13

lessons will be learned (they never are).
we take your (insert here) very seriously (no you don't).

eastegg · 26/01/2026 14:19

Chill used as an adjective.

So I can cope with ‘I’m going home to chill’. Not too bad.

’It was all very chill’. OMFG.

Foggytree · 26/01/2026 14:20

'I'm embarrassed for you'

No you're not, you just think you've got a clever way to sling out an insult.

GG27 · 26/01/2026 14:20

“Of an evening” it makes no sense to me and every time somebody says it I recoil in horror… joking, kind of

StephensLass1977 · 26/01/2026 14:21

Fancy "a bit" of dinner? Why only a bit?
Mummy influencer.
Influencer.
"The Girls".

Freda69 · 26/01/2026 14:21

Excited to share with you (patronising)
Leaning in
Outside of (just outside)
Reaching out
Working tirelessly (politicians)
Pinging you (messaging you) - husband says this all the time
Back in the day
Big beautiful anything (Trump)

The13thFairy · 26/01/2026 14:22

Infidelity being called 'straying'. Like the miscreants are dogs or cattle or sheep.

Squirrelblanket · 26/01/2026 14:22

Blowing away the cobwebs

And people when asked a question starting their answer with SO

Yes yes yes and yes again.

boringbiscuits · 26/01/2026 14:23

"I'm just reaching out"
"Let's touch base"

Oh and "it knocked me sick". What does that even mean? Not sure why that one annoys me so much but it does.

BatsInHibernation · 26/01/2026 14:23

Posh - unless used to describe royals or actual aristocracy. Restaurants aren't posh and please don't ever say 'posh frock'.
Fancy. As above. Only ok if used in a very silly way, or for fancy dress or rats/mice.
Little boys/girls room - it's the loo
Vibing - urgh. Were you getting on well? Do you fancy each other? Ok, say that then
Date night - you are just going out somewhere. Sounds like another weird pressure where you have to prove your relationship with social media rituals
Any crap and cliched sayings that are more work than just SAYING WHAT YOU MEAN

KimberleyClark · 26/01/2026 14:23

BoudiccaRuled · 26/01/2026 12:39

Invite as a noun (the word is invitation).
"Sat" instead of sitting.
Myself, yourself, himself instead of me, you, him.
There are many...

Yes, “I was sat at a table” means someone forcibly propelled you into a chair.

CJsGoldfish · 26/01/2026 14:27

Bubba
Mumma
Furbaby
Poorly
Love the bones of..

Threads with the following:
"hello lovelies/lovely mumsnetters/gorgeous mummas/etc etc"
"my friend/neighbour/colleague lets call her x.."

"you can guess where I'm going"
"stay with me"
"hit me with your best x"
"Am I a bad mum?" (You're not really asking and no ones going to say yes)'

JoyintheMorning · 26/01/2026 14:28

Have we had 'Lived experience' yet? It sounds so false.

AsTreesWalking · 26/01/2026 14:29

All of these!
I especially lothe 'disinterested' for 'uninterested' - two different words, two different meanings!

Also my husband always says 'bog' instead of loo - makes me unreasonably cross.

evilharpy · 26/01/2026 14:30

'Simply', used in any context. I have an irrational hatred of it.

I simply cannot stand mushrooms.
We simply have to try the new bakery.
You simply click here and it will generate an invoice.

It serves no purpose, it's annoying, just leave it out.

Happyjoe · 26/01/2026 14:30

An old one that winds my partner up to distraction, lol, and that's pronouncing the letter H correctly.
It's all soft now. I enjoyed telling him that while giving my postcode out the other day, I was corrected by the other person with the softer (incorrect) version.
