Facebook marketplace gits

I know IANBU but I’m just here to rant. Trying to give away a large mirror. It’s being list for £0 because there is a small crack in it. The crack is advertised and pictured. Nevertheless I get tonnes of interest.

Person A - turns up but won’t take it because it has a crack in it. 🤦‍♀️

Relist it.

Person B - really keen and then cancels ten minutes before they are due to arrive. 🙄

Relist it again.

Person C - hasn’t shown up. Was keen as mustard last night, now not responding to messages. 😡

It’s so rude. Fucking time wasters.

What possesses people to think behaving like this is ok?

AIBU to send person C a message just saying “Rude.”, and then block them? They were due here an hour ago.

If you ever want to plumb the depths of humanity and full experience how thick and entitled people are then offer something for free on FB Marketplace

MsGreying · 25/01/2026 14:24

I posted a box of old broken laptops on a fb group for free.
First person to make contact was the person who took it.
He was prompt messaging and told me when he was setting off and turned up. Polite and pleasant. And he came back for another load of stuff too.
I was suitably impressed.

They have a bit of value to someone who repairs laptops but might just sit in his house forever too.

LamentableShoes · 25/01/2026 14:29

I've actually never had a bad experience on FB marketplace in terms of people actually picking stuff up. There is the frequent barrage of single messages with no response when I reply, or requests to send it for free etc, which I find bad enough!

Eleboff · 25/01/2026 14:36

In the ad I say that whoever takes it will need a van as it's too big to fit in a car. Cue endless queries along the lines of "do you think it will fit in my VW polo?". Or - even better - "I don't have a van, can you deliver it to me?". WTAF.

I advertised a lovely desk chair for £8 (just so I didn’t get endless people if free) and a woman asked me to deliver it as she drives a convertible 😂 I feel for you. Maybe they thought you were transferring the seven years of bad luck along with the mirror?

I once advertised a garden table and chairs on FB Marketplace. The first ‘buyer’ turned up in a mini and then looked genuinely surprised that they didn’t fit. The second person didn’t turn up. The third person called me a liar and ‘scum of the earth’ because I wouldn’t post them to Scotland. I gave up.

Slightyamusedandsilly · 25/01/2026 15:31

A friend advised me to never give anything away on Marketplace for free. She said even charging a fiver changes the calibre of people that buy. So far, I've discovered she's right.

Woahhhh entitlement off of the charts, with that last one!

CraftyMintHedgehog · 25/01/2026 15:36

I don't use the FB Marketplace any more. I use a local freecycle group on Facebook which has an admin team running it, and anyone that doesn't turn up or wastes time gets blocked. Much better.

I sometimes list stuff on Market place at the same time, but give priority over the local group as I rarely have a time waster on there.

Favouritefruits · 25/01/2026 15:39

I sold one of those big hot wheels garages just before Xmas, the guy turned up on his bike 😩it fell to bits as he dropped it so my elder son had to show him how to put it together in the dark on our driveway! I ended up running the guy home with it just to get him to go away!

SunnySideDeepDown · 25/01/2026 15:40

I agree, although I do think it depends what you’re giving away. A large broken mirror that needs a van is very undesirable.

a) majority of people don’t have access to a van
b) a mirror with a crack isn’t what most people would want when they can spend £10 on marketplace and get a good as new one.

Are you just trying to give it away because you don’t want to pay for a van to take away yourself? It’s like trying to giveaway a used mattress. Most people would rather pay £100 and get one delivered from Dunelm that pay the same for a van to end up with a grotty old mattress.

singlepringle12 · 25/01/2026 15:44

I listed a sofa for free on Marketplace. When the person turned up, he gave me a tenner … ‘that was the listed price right?’ I quickly deleted the listing as he shifted the sofa out 😂
In amongst his messages, were a LOT of trolls & scammers, I was surprised with a free item!

Navybluecoat · 25/01/2026 15:48

I've never sold on there but buying can be just as bad

Our bedroom tv packed up so I had a look on there for a new one

3 different people got really arsey because I asked politely if it was still available

One had a go at me for even asking, another blocked me straight away and the other said she'd message once she got home from work

7 months later,im still waiting

Why list it if you dont want to sodding sell it?!

I gave up and am still without a TV

However, it was cracked, not broken and it didn't need a van.

MsGreying · 25/01/2026 16:04

I gave away the rocks from a rockery. I was surprised to not find them in a broken car at the end of the road.

VanilleFraise · 25/01/2026 16:05

@SunnySideDeepDown

Apologies - shoot me now 😂

rainbowunicorn22 · 25/01/2026 16:10

had a woman message me last night, interested in a dogloo for sale. It is a tray you put a puppy pad in for dogs to pee indoors. ideal for pups etc. we have a disabled dog who has to use pads, so thought this thing would have been ideal for him, save the pads having to be everywhere just in case! he would hopefully get the idea where his toilet area was, but he would not entertain it, so it was unused. cost me nearly £20 and i was asking £10. lady said she finished work at 11.30 so would be with me soon after but we waited until nearly 2 no sign of her we had to go out so dont know what happened there.

Parsleyforme · 25/01/2026 16:28

I get a lot more time wasters for things I’m giving away for free. People just not turning up, or missing the time they’ve said and saying maybe they’ll come tomorrow etc.
At the beginning of the COL crisis I bought bags of food and toiletries to give away to someone in need on the local “kindness” Facebook group. I was messed around by about 5 people and the lady who came in the end had rescheduled 3 times. I haven’t bothered again

Parsleyforme · 25/01/2026 16:31

Although I did have a lovely cake maker pick up a box of free sequins and give me two cupcakes she’d decorated beautifully as thanks, so there are a few nice people out there!

Loloj · 25/01/2026 16:33

I was once selling a massive fridge freezer for a tenner as just wanted rid of it. It worked perfectly, had a few small marks but looked fine. Listed as needing a van to collect it as it was very big.

A guy turns up with his car. I said “I really don’t think it will fit”. He insisted he had measured and it would definitely fit.

Cue 15 minutes of him scraping and denting the fridge trying to force it in the back of his car! In the end he gave up, admitted defeat and he said he would have to leave it. I looked at the state of the fridge, looked at him, he handed me a tenner and said he would come back. He didn’t.

YellowBlueStar · 25/01/2026 16:49

It's usually gone smoothly for me buying from Facebook. Until last year when I arranged to pick up an item of furniture. I was sent the address and told a time to be there. When I got there at the specified time, I was met with a blank look and then told "oh, sorry, my daughter decided she wanted it so I've given it to her."
So, now I always message before I leave to check that the item is still available and they are expecting me.

Oh sorry about the van, I must have mixed up a few posts!

I still think a cracked mirror is a hard sell. Even people on poverty would probably go without or spend £5 on an uncracked mirror.

In my eyes, a cracked mirror is a broken mirror - worthless (and dangerous)

The OP didn't force them to reply to the ad, if they didn't want it why bother responding?

Maybe they didn’t see the crack initially. Or maybe they did and they’re messers.

Im just saying, desirable items tend to be sold / given away easily. Undesirable items that are broken and large, not so much.
