I know IANBU but I’m just here to rant. Trying to give away a large mirror. It’s being list for £0 because there is a small crack in it. The crack is advertised and pictured. Nevertheless I get tonnes of interest.

Person A - turns up but won’t take it because it has a crack in it. 🤦‍♀️

Relist it.

Person B - really keen and then cancels ten minutes before they are due to arrive. 🙄

Relist it again.

Person C - hasn’t shown up. Was keen as mustard last night, now not responding to messages. 😡

It’s so rude. Fucking time wasters.

What possesses people to think behaving like this is ok?

AIBU to send person C a message just saying “Rude.”, and then block them? They were due here an hour ago.

the ones that piss me off the most are people who message ‘postcode?’ No hello, nothing. Umm no, you can see the approx location on the listing, why do you want to know the street I live on before you haggle your price / ask a million questions or if I’ll drop it to you (no I won’t)?

Eleboff · 26/01/2026 08:57

My current "buyer" is telling me my postcode is wrong. Errrr, no love. It isn't. FFS.

I get that big bulky items that aren't in mint condition are more problematic. But isn't that the entire point of marketplace - we all know that it's second hand stuff that is cheaper because it's been used. You're not getting something perfect. It is clearly advertised as the condition it is in, so either you want it or your don't. It would be perfect for someone wanting a big, ornate mirror - maybe in a shop or a boujis PT gym / pilates studio type thing. I firmly believe there's a market for everything. I'm not worried about how long it takes to shift, but I am annoyed by pisstakers, time wasters and people who are downright rude.

Although I did have a lovely cake maker pick up a box of free sequins and give me two cupcakes she’d decorated beautifully as thanks, so there are a few nice people out there!

I've had a few nice experiences with our local Freecycle website from people who have emailed later to thank me. I also have received a bottle of wine and some large shrubs for the garden.

My favourite was the young man who turned up on his bike to pick up three pictures that I thought would end up in the skip as couldn't believe anyone would want them.

As he left, he handed me three bottles of Budweiser lager and insisted that I took them as a thank you. 😁

HHCrochetDiva · 26/01/2026 09:21

My most frustrating one was selling a canvas covered Argos wardrobe, bloke was all oh my wife sent me to collect, large estate car I though great it’ll go in no sweat, except for the two huge baby seats and all the crap in the boot, ended up having to dismantle the entire bloody thing. If he’d come with an empty car it would have been a five minute job! Loads of time wasters too…..

Sharptonguedwoman · 26/01/2026 09:57

OP, agreed. I sold a folding bike on FB a few months ago. Loads of replies from people at least 90 minutes drive away which was weird. Lots of I want it-no I don't. Best one was a 'definite' buyer from 90 minutes away who didn't turn up and messaged me the next day to say he couldn't arrange transport....
In the end it went so a sensible bloke who turned up in a van. he said when he sold things on FB he said, 'first collector gets the item'. Bit harsh but it worked.

Classiccar1 · 26/01/2026 10:29

Never offer a car or caravan as 'breaking' all parts available, you'll have hundreds of questions and sell nothing.

RollOnSunshine · 26/01/2026 11:00

You are basically trying to get somebody to takeaway your junk because you do not want to pay for that service.

Of course that will attract time wasters.

Do the decent thing and dispose of it properly or pay somebody that can. A cracked mirror is a dangerous item so stop trying to palm off your responsbility.

If you ever want to plumb the depths of humanity and full experience how thick and entitled people are then offer something for free on FB Marketplace

THIS.

BCBird · 26/01/2026 11:08

I moved recently and had stuff to give away. My cousin put stuff on FB for me for free. The cheek of some people was shocking.

Rosti1981 · 26/01/2026 11:19

Olio is generally so much better, as users rate each other and I've found it massively weeds out timewasters.
Not everything I've listed get shifted, but an awful lot has.

Greengreengras · 26/01/2026 11:26

The interest and promises to show up. No shows and no message to say they were not coming. The moment the item is free it’s worse. I put small silly prices on things now if I can bring myself to advertise items. The item I advertised had 4 no shows. When it was collected one of the no shows messaged me asking if it was still available. I feel your pain.

Or alternatively I'm trying to be responsible and avoid sending something that is still perfectly useable to landfill. As evidenced by others on this thread - one man's "junk" is another man's treasure. Even if the mirror isn't wanted the frame is always re-useable. We should all be looking to re-use and recycle before we chuck stuff away.

Quite agree. I've given up now and tend to just put things at the entrance of my cul de sac with a sign saying 'free'. 9 times out of 10 they go. We have a given on kindness Facebook page for our village and that's almost as bad as marketplace.

PlainSkyr · 26/01/2026 11:44

Never offer anything for free. Atleast put it for £5.00
then you’ll filter out the time wasters (largely)

PlainSkyr · 26/01/2026 11:45

And don’t delist until it gets picked up..

if there is new interest stall them until it’s picked up

tedibear · 26/01/2026 11:47

Eleboff · 25/01/2026 14:36

In the ad I say that whoever takes it will need a van as it's too big to fit in a car. Cue endless queries along the lines of "do you think it will fit in my VW polo?". Or - even better - "I don't have a van, can you deliver it to me?". WTAF.

Reminds me of the guy that turned up in a corsa to take an Ikea extendable kids bed. Was a full size single with a massive frame. I was like he’s never gonny get that in there! He did, wtf 😂

I don’t give away anything for free now. The cheeky gits that ask for delivery too. Oh aye I’ll just waste a hour of my time and petrol money to give something away. Brings out all the nutters or ungrateful ppl. Someone told me you’re better to make it a really low price and then when they come say just take it.

I gave away my little girls cot, wardrobe and changing station all beautiful matching furniture in great condition. I thought wld be a nice thing to do. Didn’t even get a thanks, they moaned about having no instructions to put it back together when they were picking it up, which I had already told them in the listing. It really pissed me off to be honest.

7238SM · 26/01/2026 12:14

Could you leave it out the front with a FREE sign on it?

I give away things on olio. The listing shows a map with with area you live within a street or 2, along with how many miles away the item is. Back and forth conversation from a woman who was going to collect something. When I gave her my full address, she ranted that I'd wasted her time because I lived too far away.

VanilleFraise · 26/01/2026 15:15

I did once have a bloke try to fit a king sized mattress into a vauxhall astra. At least he saw the funny side and came back the following day with a van. The amount of people who expected me to deliver it was insane.

7238SM · 26/01/2026 16:16

And only after you give them your address- the sob stories start:
-I don't drive
-I have no limbs
-I'll have to fit collection around my dialysis/chemo/brain surgery
-No, I can't possibly catch the bus, taxi, get friend to collect etc etc 🙄

(I'm not saying that some of the above might be true for some people. Some of the above excuses were used by a local woman who used to post pics of her running marathons and catching the bus all the time, yet she was unable to collect a bag of free, new items I'd advertised!)

We once sold a bunk bed, they turned up in a small car with their kids in the back. I just left them too it, not my problem. I've then tried so sell some trofast, the person who bought them turned up in a tiny car and couldn't take it so I had to sell to another person. I have no clue how people don't think about this.
