January birthdays are miserable

They are though aren't they? It's freezing, the weather is grim, everyone is skint, no-one can be arsed. Everything I've fancied doing is either closed or fully booked or unsuitable for the weather with small DC.

I'm a my birthday please either join my winge or just let me wallow. 😅

My husband’s birthday is mid January and you are completely right, it is a pain in the hole.

Happy birthday though!!

Zanatdy · 25/01/2026 08:49

Yep they are. Mine is 30th Dec, one of the worse days for a bday. You have my sympathy as Jan isn’t much better - though cheaper holidays if not right at the start of Jan.

DecemberGloom · 25/01/2026 08:49

In the same boat and agreed! Have rarely bothered arranging anything partyish for my birthday as it’s raining, dark and no-one has been paid. Awful planning 🤣

FeistyFrankie · 25/01/2026 08:52

Change your outlook? A January birthday is a chance to brighten up an otherwise miserable and uneventful month!

Think glamorous cocktail party, or a nice lunch out somewhere, a weekend away (flights and hotels all cheap as it's low season).

It is what you make it. So make the birthday celebration something to look forward to.

ChangedWhoIWas · 25/01/2026 08:54

It was mine yesterday - and it’s so hot in Australia, I wasn’t able to go out to celebrate.

mamajong · 25/01/2026 08:56

On the plus side, DC has a Jan birthday and

  • they get more with their birthday money (Jan sales)
  • a higher value gift (Jan sales)

Plus weve found people do want to celebrate because theirs naff all else to look forward to BUT the celebration does need to be inexpensive because you are right everyone is skint.

But yanbu its a rough birthday month overall, just trying to shine a beacon of light

I bet you have a summer birthday 😂

My friend’s birthday is 2nd January which I think is the worst birthday date in the world (as does she!). I do make the effort every year to send her a surprise in the post.

magicstar1 · 25/01/2026 09:01

Mine is the end of January so I've never had a problem with it. It's something to look forward to after all the Christmas fuss is over.

Yes I agree. Even NYE or NYD (which a couple of friends also have) is better tbh. 2 Jan – everyone is back to work and no one wants to do anything.

Mine is early Jan too. Everyone is doing dry January or dieting. And the weather is rubbish.

Top tip if gifting for a Jan birthday – do not wrap presents in Christmas paper!

Crunchymum · 25/01/2026 09:01

Happy Birthday OP 🎂 🥳

I have two January children (who aren't twins!) so we have 2 birthdays a few days apart.

It's difficult to find the motivation, energy, funds and gifts (we've usually exhausted most gifts options for Christmas! My kids are very lucky and don't need / want much but it makes gift buying tricky)

We usually do a family party and the older one picks a few friends and we go bowling or cinema etc. In fact that's what we are doing today for the midweek child's birthday.

On the upside my other DC's birthday isn't until end of the year (the other side of Christmas) so my parental birthday duties are done for almost 11 months now!!

Christmas paper? That is brutal, haha.

Lol nope celebrated mine last week!

Liondoesntsleepatnight · 25/01/2026 09:04

Happy Birthday! You have my sympathy. Mine wasn’t great this year, so I ended up treating me and DD to a swanky lunch last Monday. Next year book Theatre/Circus/Cinema tickets?

I was surprised by how busy it is out and about. Couldn’t get a booking at nice restaurant last night.

Itslikesowhatever · 25/01/2026 09:04

Mine is mid January and no one ever wants to do anything but I’m used to it as I’ve got older.

Myfridgeiscool · 25/01/2026 09:05

I had a January wedding, lifted the January gloom nicely. Divorced now, lol (thank god).

January is a miserable month.

Happy Birthday OP!

Forty85 · 25/01/2026 09:06

Yeah they are, two of my children have them. One mid month, one on the 2nd and hers has been the worst. Always get people cancelling last minute for parties, even as a little kid or saying they aren't drinking for the adult years but will come awhile and leaving after an hour or people who are skint and can't come at all.

I just always try make sure they are special and will continue to as they grow older. Meals out, spa day for daughter if she wants, money in advance so they can go away with their partners if they want if they are skint if they have children and we will babysit.

Gingernaut · 25/01/2026 09:06

Holocaust Memorial Day AND the day before pay day

I'm skinter than skint and everyone's miserable

skippy67 · 25/01/2026 09:07

I agree. Dd's birthday is 12th Jan. I have a summer birthday, which is the absolute best IMHO..

HorrorFan81 · 25/01/2026 09:08

My birthday is January and I really like it! Gives me something to look forward to after Xmas

summitfever · 25/01/2026 09:09

Spas are open, hand him the kids and go have a chill day

SusanChurchouse · 25/01/2026 09:09

My daughter has never forgiven me for giving her a January birthday. Thankfully it’s towards the end so she has a clear month after Christmas to prepare another list of wants.

VeterinaryCareAssistant · 25/01/2026 09:10

I've got two grandchildren with January birthdays, which means I have to be organised before Christmas to get their gifts or else my budget would consist of 50p.

I should really put the cash away to buy their gifts in January sales.

stickydough · 25/01/2026 09:10

Yep, I have a DC with one. She loves it though so far, loves that she gets to ask for all the things she didn’t get at Xmas and she likes the cold. But for me it’s shite to organise. Makes it feel like the festive period goes on forever and I don’t get a break from party planner until mid Jan! Sorry op that doesn’t help you though 🥴. Happy birthday.

JustGotToKeepOnKeepingOn · 25/01/2026 09:10

I love my end of January birthday! Everyone has just been paid. Everyone is ready to forget about their New Year’s resolutions about less food and alcohol and are chomping at the bit to go out. Always get great presents as everything is in the sale. Lots of fabulous deals at spa and beauty places! And I know how old I am for the year - I couldn’t cope with an age switch mid year 😜
