January birthdays are miserable

They are though aren't they? It's freezing, the weather is grim, everyone is skint, no-one can be arsed. Everything I've fancied doing is either closed or fully booked or unsuitable for the weather with small DC.

I'm a my birthday please either join my winge or just let me wallow. 😅

You have my sympathy. My birthday is September which I think is possibly the best time for a birthday: summer hoildays are over but it's nowhere near winter or even full autumn, nobody is skint, and people are still up for partying.

Top tip if gifting for a Jan birthday – do not wrap presents in Christmas paper!

This made me laugh- does this generally bother people? Since having a baby boy last summer I have a box full of baby boy gift bags… since then every birthday or anniversary present has been handed to the recipient in a baby boy gift bag and a lighthearted apology, usually makes people laugh!

Not the same!

ARunByFruiting · 25/01/2026 11:19

My dc's birthday is mid January and I've always found that by the time it comes around Christmas feels like ages ago. It's always nice to break up January with a party (when little) and now a nice birthday meal somewhere.

dottiedodah · 25/01/2026 11:22

Gahr I too am in September .I agree with the lovely weather (usually!) not too warm ,lots of energy still .

KimberleyClark · 25/01/2026 11:22

Why not choose a different date to celebrate your birthday? Just because your birthday falls on a particular date does not mean you are obliged to celebrate it on that day!

FinallyHere · 25/01/2026 11:24

How would you feel about having a separate ‘official’ birthday on a day of your own choosing ? That’s what I do for my own birthday, DH finds it incomprehensible but it really works for me.

namechangeabc123 · 25/01/2026 11:24

I have a January birthday, and there are limited ways to celebrate. Obviously any celebrating has to be done indoors, so it makes it expensive, too. I usually have a meal out, or a spa day, or a cinema or theatre trip. But it costs money. If I had a summer birthday I could just meet with friends outdoors and bring a picnic and some beers. I was so jealous of my friends with summer birthdays when I was a child. They all had garden parties for their birthdays!

SpiritVaults · 25/01/2026 11:27

Mine is 2 weeks after Christmas, so it's miserable as sin,but I share it with Elvis and Bowie so I wouldn't change it for all the tea in China.

dottiedodah · 25/01/2026 11:29

OP we went for a meal last night for our friends birthday.DD remarked that we should celebrate in the Summer! absolutely bitter wind (like being cut in two!) Although admittedly our fault. for choosing a restaurant by the beach!Poor DF will have to wait until next weekend for my pressie (no money until Wednesday.) Umpteenth time vowing not to overspend at Christmas !

My friend’s birthday is 2nd January which I think is the worst birthday date in the world (as does she!). I do make the effort every year to send her a surprise in the post.

Agree, my SIL is the 3rd. Just awful and a very forgettable birthday. My son is right at the end which is better but not great.

Amperoblue · 25/01/2026 11:34

Happy Birthday Op!

Mine was last week. I LOVE it!

Firstly everyone is moany so it’s great to be like, nah it’s my birthday.
I always get a bit of birthday money ( very welcome) and tons of presents ( either because of sakes or regifted). I don’t mind, it’s all really appreciated.
I go away for the weekend because it’s cheap and it a brilliant start to the New Year. Barcelona mainly.
Theres always a designated driver available.

January is still winter so giving up stuff or not eating feels off. Having a birthday means I don’t need to!

I do think first week of January people have it thd worst of all birthdays. People feel sorry for late December birthdays but early January gets nothing.

99pwithaflake · 25/01/2026 11:36

Mine is mid-December and I always hated it growing up. I had years of "joint presents", birthday gifts wrapped in Christmas paper, or actual Christmassy stuff wrapped in birthday paper.

My parents were really good - Christmas wasn't allowed in our house until my birthday had been and gone, but in school/with friends it was constantly overshadowed or forgotten about completely.

WhatNoRaisins · 25/01/2026 11:36

Mines around this time of year and I've hated it pretty much since since the big parties of my childhood stopped. No one can be bothered with it and yet I get criticized when I can't be bothered to celebrate it.

ahaha @SpiritVaults mine is one day out from Bowie and Elvis! well jel! I just have the Princess of blooming Wales

Amperoblue · 25/01/2026 12:08

You do have to rally people yourself.

In my experience theres nothing else happening so often the prospect of a big meet up in the pub is met with enthusiasm.

The last years haven’t been too bad weather wise. My 80’s birthdays were always called off due to snow or power cuts.

Iloveacurry · 25/01/2026 12:12

Happy birthday op. Mine was last week and it is rubbish having a January birthday.

Borgonzola · 25/01/2026 12:16

Happy birthday. It’s mine today too. Have been for a cold walk with two very grumpy small children and now back for the youngest’s nap. Party time it ain’t Grin oh well, more time for that in future Gin

Timeforchai · 25/01/2026 12:16

I love my end of January birthday. Christmas is well passed, the days are getting lighter, we have spring to look forward to and it’s the perfect excuse to arrange a short foreign holiday, even a long weekend, for some winter sun !

chasegirl · 25/01/2026 12:19

January birthday here too. Its miserable and never feels special.

PuppyMonkey · 25/01/2026 12:20

My Dsis birthday is January 4th - it’s usually around the day everyone goes back to work after Christmas and New Year so people often forget it or they barely have the enthusiasm to send a text. I do feel for her.

Momrage · 25/01/2026 10:11

We have a winner for the worst birth date! How dare you trump me on my miserable birthday 😅

Sorry...happy birthday.

My friend’s birthday is 2nd January which I think is the worst birthday date in the world (as does she!). I do make the effort every year to send her a surprise in the post.

This is also my mum’s birthday - she says much the same! Even if she goes out for dinner the pubs / restaurants are dead and zero atmosphere.

My husband’s birthday is next week and it always falls over his busiest period at work. We are celebrating in February I think. Although will still be miserable weather wise at least he won’t be chained to his desk!

MangaKanga · 25/01/2026 12:32

I love it. Beautiful sunshine, Christmas decs still up, lots of chilled wine and good vibes.

I'm in the Southern Hemisphere admittedly.

Fodencat · 25/01/2026 12:35

Mine’s the 1st. When I was in my 20s I loved how it was part of the NYE celebrations. Now, 40 years on I like it being hidden in amongst Christmas and New Year x

SpiritVaults · 25/01/2026 12:38

@clary awww, I feel your pain! If it's any consolation, you also share with Sarah Beeny and VERY topical- Nicola Peltz!
