Ontobetterthings · 25/01/2026 08:24

I started down the gym a week before Christmas. Cut alcohol first of jan and been dieting and upping protein. Been going gym 4 times a week. Started weight training and lifting weights. Was feeling good this morning. Weighed in and ive lost 3lbs. Im a couple of stones overweight.

Im really demoralised. All my mates have lost loads of weight on ghe jabs. Im just wondering if im doing the right thing now. Aibu?

Dexa scan will show minimal muscle

This is not true for everyone. I gain muscle super easily. My first year of lifting in 2019, I had complete recomposition went a size down with no change in my weight while eating at 300 deficit. It is obvious in my pictures. My coach at the time was in disbelief. I am dense, which is not uncommon for women from my part of the glove

i appreciate what you say may be true in general but my personal experience is different and I have read plenty of literature to support it.

i miss those days.

Where is the muscle? You lose body fat, where is the muscle?

Are you dull?

PurpleCoo · 25/01/2026 19:55

The two things aren't mutually exclusive. I'm on WLI and I also up my protein, go to the gym 4 times a week and lift weights and do everything you do.

You need to do you, never mind what your mates and husband are doing. It's not a race to see who can lose weight the quickest. Two stone to lose really isn't all that much, perhaps the people losing quicker have a lot more to lose.

By losing weight slower and building muscle you will be in a better place than those losing weight quickly and not thinking about exercise and nutrition, regardless of the method used to lose weight

ChangeTheDayJob · 25/01/2026 20:06

Honestly, well done you for taking action!

Muscle and fat weigh the same. You are definitely putting on muscle if you're lifting.

Try to shift from the scales to looking at what you see in the mirror and how your clothes are fitting.

Drink plenty of water and bear in mind your body will retain water when you eat food high in salt and through your menstral cycle.

If you must weigh on the scales, do it every day and make a note of it. Do at the same time every day (preferably in the morning before eating or drinking anything). Eventually you will see your body's natural fluctuations.

Remember, when you weigh, you're weighing your whole body - not just fat.

How much are you lifting

mondaytosunday · 25/01/2026 20:12

Because the battle if the bulge is won in the kitchen, not the gym. And don’t fall into the ‘you’re building muscle’ crap - it takes a very long time and significant work to build muscle. You can tone for sure, but build? Not in a month.
Work out your TDEE, minus 500 calories, ignore anything burned during exercise, and be consistent.

DitzyDerbyBabe86 · 25/01/2026 20:16

Gym 100%. WLJ come with a slew of health drawbacks. Numerous people I work with are on them and I could count numerous who now have health issues. The gym will be doing your body the world of good.

Disturbia81 · 25/01/2026 20:17

Working out always adds water weight to me temporarily, because muscles need it to repair. Also blood volume gets heavier. You are doing your body so much good, the results will reveal themselves once the fat is lost!

I’m doing both gym and jabs!

How much are you lifting

I'm not sure what you are hoping for by asking me that.

It's different weights depending on whether I am doing biceps, triceps, chest or shoulders etc.

If I said what I lift for each area, I am not sure how helpful that would be for anyone else, as it's very individual. I started low though and increase once it gets easy to lift that weight. I have been doing it for over 6 months now I reckon.

TwilightAb · 25/01/2026 20:34

FringeTime · 25/01/2026 19:17

You’ll have to eat better and exercise forever to maintain your weightloss either way. Good luck to you! 🙌

Yes but at least I won't be paying out money monthly on medication along with the uncertainty of any rise in cost.

it's usually under the fat, or what do you mean?

The simplest easiest way I've lost weight and relatively quickly nearly a stone in a month. Intermittent fasting 16/18 hours and last 2 weeks ive added a keto diet but even that is super simple not strict or calorie counting.

That's without really adding in exercising I do walk daily and cycle but nothing major. Its all about eating less and what I am eating is high in fat and protein so I'm fuller for longer. Its been such a game changer and something I can see myself keeping up even when I add in treats. Mentally it's so simple to say to myself I eat between 10am and then stop at 6pm. Many days I'm not even hungry till 1pm. And I really do love my food so quite the change for me.

Hi, if you don't mind me asking what's ur start weight to have lost 1st in a month?

I was on the jabs. Put on in region of 6kg. Looking at keto.

Would like to do intermittent fasting but no idea how I work that when working n/s

Skip breakfast. Intermittent fasting. I’m skinny and realised when reviewing a students paper (academic) that that’s the reason I’m not fat. What time to you go to the gym.

Don’t be ridiculous!! Your genetics and family genes will be why you are the way you are! Cutting essential meals out messes with your sugar levels and also makes your body hold onto every calorie as it’s put into starvation mode! Telling someone some utter drivel when you clearly have no medical experience or knowledge severe stupid

Nearly50omg · 26/01/2026 19:23

If you lose 3lbs in 3 weeks that’s very good!!! Slowly us far best as then it stays off!!! Losing a stone in a month is far far too much too quickly and as soon as they stop the injections they will pile it all and more back on!! Also you will end up with lots of loose skin if you lose weight quickly whereas slowly it shrinks with you

FitnessTrainer2020 · 26/01/2026 20:33

Wickedlittledancer · 25/01/2026 17:38

This is utter nonsense. The medication doesn’t make you lose weight faster, how can you be wading in and so ill informed; your rate of weight loss is fully dependent on how many cals you consume. And a good diet and exercise is not mutually exclusive to the injections, in fact for many of us they go hand in hand.

please take some time to at least spend some cursory mins googling and learning the basics on the meds.

You've completely misunderstood what I said, but thanks to another poster upthread for correcting you on my comments.

I have a masters degree in exercise science with a dissertation specialising in the biological antecedents of fat loss so 'having a quick google' as you suggested isn't something I'd do - I only use quality research studies and googling doesn't cut it if you're really serious about interventions that work.

Research intermittent fasting. It doesn’t mess with the sugar levels in a bad way but rather gives the body a chance to reset. It’s been proven to reverse type 2 diabetes. And as for “medical experience or knowledge”, I’d suggest that nutrition and diet are an area where modern medicine is woefully behind/ plain wrong.

How did I misunderstand your statement, you said, quote unquote Jabs make you lose weight faster

they do not. And irrelevant of your degree in exercising,, that does not in any way relate to scientific knowledge of the meds. They do not make you lose weight faster, there is no way round this and I corrected it.

Wickedlittledancer · 26/01/2026 23:16

cucumber4745 · 25/01/2026 19:05

GLP affects insulin so it does make you lose weight faster. It curbs hunger reducing calories but it also how these are broken down and metabolism. You are misinformed.

Additionally for people who are new to weight training, muscle gain DOES happen in caloric deficit. It is called recomposition where your muscles draw what they need from the stored fat. Hence muscle gain and fat loss occur simultaneously and is VERY common in the first year of training. It gets harder down the line due to how muscles expand.

you need to inform yourself on how biology works

It isn’t faster nor does rhe manufacturers claim rhis, in fact they advise 1-2lbs a week and how to eat. But do link to showing us how they make us loose weight faster.

narcASD · 27/01/2026 00:08

I do both, 3st one lost in just over 3 months, I have no side effects from Mounjaro, no sickness or reflux, just a better attitude towards food and less cravings, I started the gym just before Christmas and can now really start to see the benefits. Take measurements too as scales are just one way of measuring.

HeidiLite · 27/01/2026 07:27

jabs didn't make me lose faster. They made me lose longer, that's the difference. If you are struggling with food noise and addiction, yes you can get your willpower together and restrict food, but it's exhausting and most people fall off the wagon rather sooner than later, usually before they have achieved their desired weight loss. Another failed diet.
