Welfare spending to rise by £73.2bn to £406.2bn

Over the next five years, the OBR is forecasting that UK welfare spending will rise by £73.2bn to £406.2bn.

How does everyone feel about this? I’m livid because I pay lots of tax. I don’t mind paying tax to maintain a civilised society - but this? This is surely taking the piss and will result in weaker and weaker services as the amount of £ available reduces day by day.

YANBU - it’s totally deranged. The every growing uk population can’t function effectively on such a benefits for all basis.

YABU - this welfare spending bill is truly representative of need.

@Cappuccinodelight
I’m not sure you understand - I have a profoundly disabled child.
Im asking YOU what you want to do? Don’t worry about me, I’ll be caring and loving and providing etc while I can. I want to know what YOUR position is

It sounds like you want to give up on them due to cost.

They receive medical help but not other luxuries.

It sounds like you are clueless as to how expensive disabilities can be or what they may look like.

Especially if you expect disabled people such as wheelchair users to be able to live safely in a tiny dorm. They wouldn't be able to get through the door.

MrsLizzieDarcy · 23/01/2026 19:44

What I don't understand is the attitude that so many people on here have that it's the Government's responsibility to provide. We've had a welfare state for just over 100 years and look how out of control it is.

The bile and ignorance on this thread is astounding.
Is it because it's winter and too cold to be shouting at hotels.

Unijourney · 23/01/2026 19:45

@FrightfulNightfullis your child's father working?

So what should happen to people who can not provide for themselves?

They would live in specifically designed accommodation.

The thread is about welfare generally. I mentioned disabled people as I think they need looking after but also because as soon as you say on Mumsnet that people need to be responsible for their own life everyone says but what about disabled, what about.....

I am worried though. I live in a stereotypical ‘middle class liberal London leftie’ world. And a few friends have said they will now vote for Reform. A mix of Labour, Lib dem and Green voters. I am not white, I work in the NHS, and it makes me worried for my kids and the future of our country even more.

… the old Tory voters are lost and Conservative Party has fallen apart, unless proportional representation is brought in its hard to predict the future

Dragonflytamer · 23/01/2026 19:49

50bn of 72bn of the increase is just compound effect of inflation at 3%.

Imagine if everyone got the medical help they needed.

Why not let them stay in their own homes? A familiar place that already meets their needs.

My disabled son already lives in adapted accommodation. Would we have to move to that specific one so that we wouldn't be left to starve?

Trixibell1234 · 23/01/2026 19:53

I think it’s failure to plan for the ageing population that’s the problem.

Roboxed · 23/01/2026 19:50

Now, that is something that could go some way to reducing some of the benefit bill.

ThinkAboutItTomorrow · 23/01/2026 19:54

90% of that increase is pensions and old age care (according to OBR) so not sure the link to population?

Cappuccinodelight · 23/01/2026 19:55

Posters often refer to privilege.

In decades to come we will look back and the privilege now is those totally reliant on welfare.

Can anyone tell me why so many think it is a right? What are your plans if it is no longer an option for the majority.

Fucking hell, it is not a privilege to be disabled and unable to work.

People have killed themselves when their benefits were cut. One less payment going out though. Silver lining and all that.

Please. I have said I support the disabled. If someone is non disabled yes, it is a privilege to live off the state.

Totally reliant on welfare and yep, such a privilege to have my successful career snatched away from me at 28 by a life limiting condition.

Badacrowe · 23/01/2026 20:01

ProudCat · 23/01/2026 19:03

In work benefits are a disgrace. Employers should pay an actual living wage rather than expect tax payers to pick up the bill so they can increase their profits.

Similarly, the amount of tax payers money that is spent on hugely inflated rental costs. It's not my job to provide someone with their unearned income through buy to let

There was a time you never really heard this - I’ve noticed so many more people saying this nowadays. I would at the very least be clawing back from companies who make over a certain level of profit on the back of their crap wages. These poor paying organisations are, however, only doing what their shareholders expect - make profit. Nowt wrong with that of course, but said profits shouldn’t be subsidised by taxpayer paid for benefits. Companies will carry on unless they have a business case otherwise. And if the means to do so stops.

Hellohelga · 23/01/2026 20:02

Key drivers are pensions and disability benefits. Not sure there’s any point in being “livid”. Just use your vote accordingly when the time comes. I assume it will be Reform?

I'm totally reliant on benefits because my son is disabled which I don't consider to be particularly fortunate. I can't imagine many people would want their child to be disabled?

If it wasn't an option any more then I suppose my son would have to go in to care which would also cost the tax payers.

No, the "non-disabled" include people who have care responsibilities. They actually save the tax payer a hell of a lot more than the meagre payment they get.
People who are between jobs are not living it up. Have a look at the rates of UC for a single person who is out of work. Could you live on that amount?
If you took that off of them, it does not mean they will suddenly find work. For starters, there is no work out there.

Cappuccinodelight · 23/01/2026 20:06

I have been out of work and I didn't receive a penny in welfare. Guess I was not considered deserving of the privilege.
