To think I can recreate 1986 for myself?

I’ve been going through a difficult stage mental health wise. 1986 was great for me because in the spring of 1986 I started my first ever diet and by the summer that year was definitely

“beach ready, babe!”

I’d gone from fat to normal weight. I also had no mental health issues or self esteem issues and felt in 1986 that now that I was slim I’d be happy, popular, successful in love and career.

Since 86 I developed Self Doubt for one reason and another.

Do you think I can recreate the spirit and conditions of 1986 so that I can

‘live my best life?’

I mean the year ends with a 6!!

What spirit and conditions are you even talking about? 1986 was 40 years ago.

Egglio · 22/01/2026 17:08

Isn't this your second thread on this?

Alittlefrustrated · 22/01/2026 17:10

Well you can certainly commit to making changes, set realistic goals, and adopt a can do attitude. Expect lapses, accept they happen, and keep going anyway. Accept help if you need it. There was nothing magical about 1986. What are your goals this time around?Good luck.

RecordBreakers · 22/01/2026 17:54

No. You can't.
A lot changes in 40 years.
The world at large. Your age. Your body. Your life.

You can make resolutions in 2026 about any changes you want to make, but you can't recreate a time from 40 years ago.

MakeYourOwnSunshine · 22/01/2026 17:57

I can assure you you're beach ready now and I don't even know you.

I hate all that toxic diet culture shit, why would you want to go back to that?!

LookingThroughGlass · 22/01/2026 18:02

Well, you could start gearing up to celebrate the wedding of Andrew and Fergie in July (they might remarry this year now they're both disgraced so Sarah can move back in with him).

Wham will be splitting up later this year, you could put The Edge of Heaven on your playlist, together with that other summer '86 classic, The Chicken Song.

The M25 motorway will open this autumn, with Maggie Thatcher cutting the ribbon ...

Exciting times!

PrincessOfPreschool · 22/01/2026 18:07

As long as you don't recreate it for everyone. 1986 was a terrible year for me. I had my 13th birthday in the summer, full of teenage angst and bullying in school. DS2 calls it my 'clapped phase' (thanks DS).

becausetrampslikeus · 22/01/2026 18:11

start with diet and exercise

diet - not dieting. But eating good food, lots of fruit and veg and as little UPF as possible.

exercise - anything - walk, yoga, classes, swimming - what did the younger you like doing?

and then the hard bit - what do you want to be happy ? It has to be something that comes from you . In 1986 it was a beach body. What is it now?

me - it’s a long distance walking challenge and learning Spanish

do you want to get involved in a club? Do you want to make your life worthwhile and volunteer ? Learn something new? Be friendly to more people ? Renovate your house ? Apply for new jobs?

yes you can - and 1986 was a while back - you are my age - this is a great age for renovation of yourself

My leanness
my youth
my sense of hope …

Just had a glorious trip down memory lane binge watching Adam and the Ants. Took me straight back to the 80s.

Thank you for your advice - I really alleviate everyone’s responses on this

For me there was something magical about 1986. After a lifetime of abuse, there was FINALLY a shaft of light ..

Apart from losing weight, of course you can’t.

Thank you and yes you’re right. I like to think I can snap my fingers and be back there

FFS why is everyone so po faced? The OP was very clear what she meant. 1986 was her year and she wants to embrace that feeling again.

Good for you, OP.

Different things work for different people. I’ve tried manifesting in the past and that’s been quite good. People like Jules Von Hepp have books which are pretty good and he has an online presence too. But there’s nothing to stop you making this year your renaissance.

5128gap · 22/01/2026 18:17

I've recreated 1988 several times. I set my goal for what I want to be doing/looking like by the summer and work towards it. Obviously I've tweaked my goals over the years to make them age/lifestyle achievable, but the principle is the same. As is the high from stepping out knowing you achieved what you set out to. The confidence boost of the achievement spurs you on to other things during the year.

TheGander · 22/01/2026 18:17

I was 20 in 1986. I am mourning the loss of what looks I had, dealing with an achey body, dry hair, wrinkles and the need to go to the loo and pee virtually on an hourly basis. My 20 year old self is never coming back, it would be foolish to believe it will. We can only make the best of what we have now. I go swimming, do stretches, buy a nice lipstick, stop using conditioner with silicones because it dries my hair etc. Change and ageing happen.

sluslush · 22/01/2026 18:18

Didn't your mum read your diary in 1986?

It’s my wishful thinking

if I can listen to enough Aha and Princess, I’ll be magically transported back to the spring of 86 ..

RosesAndHellebores · 22/01/2026 18:22

Can I join you. I was blonde, leggy and 8st7lb, loved my job, fabulous lifestyle, thought I was in love. It led up to Big Bang in the City. Such an exciting time and I loved 80s clothes. I was 26 in 1986 - those were the days!

You can try to recreate what you loved about it certainly @ClicketyBayey.

InterestedDad37 · 22/01/2026 18:22

Go for it! 1987 would be my 1986 - it was a great year for me 😀

Disturbia81 · 22/01/2026 18:23

I love the 80s so I just watch as many 80s films, shows and listen to 80s music as much as I can. I’ve loved seeing all the 80s hair styles making a comeback and shows like stranger things have helped that.

Trying to! It’s really important as we get older. Use it or lose it!
