Pretty sure that we are going to be shutting down - but whether with immediate effect not sure. Its been a horrible day as we were informed about the meeting first thing this morning, so you can imagine how much work is getting done! Only one topic of conversation and its all going round in circles which is driving me crazy.

Don’t want to read and run @Backtoreality1

Theda13 · 22/01/2026 19:41

Hope you’re okay, OP! It’s happening far too often these days, unfortunately.

Backtoreality1 · 23/01/2026 05:55

As I thought - school closing at end of year - so many children having to change school and so many staff who are so dedicated losing their job and in some cases their home. The meeting was devastating and very poorly prepared.

ThisIsMyBurnerPhone · 23/01/2026 05:57

So sorry OP. Is your home affected? Sounds like it could have been handled better and that it was a dreadful day.

AnnaQuayInTheUk · 23/01/2026 06:01

I'm so sorry to hear that.

Thortour · 23/01/2026 06:02

Are you in a union?

Why would a school closing in 6 months time mean some staff will lose their homes? Is this a private school?

It must be a private school which means some staff (house mums if its boarding etc) have accommodation on site.

If a state school closed it would be a much longer process of dwindling numbers, downsizing or academisation.

I am so so sorry @Backtoreality1 Thanks

My DC are in a small private school with over 30% SEN and I am terrified of ours closing. My oldest is currently limping through his GCSEs at the moment.

So many threads right now about posters workplaces closing, people being made redundant (if they are 'lucky') and lives being turned upside down. It's just all so desperately sad.

Thanks
rainingsnoring · 23/01/2026 06:49

So sorry to read this @Backtoreality1
The job market is bad at present and worsening. 😪

Pipsquiggle · 23/01/2026 06:52

Very sorry to hear this @Backtoreality1

I've been made redundant twice, my sector is renowned for it. It's really shitty when you are going through it but you do get through it.
Just give yourself some time and space. People adapt / move on at different paces. Choose who you spend time with, you may need to distance yourself from colleagues who are permanently negative.

JamesWebbSpaceTelescope · 23/01/2026 06:56

The next few days/ weeks will be rocky as people process what is happening. What is good is you have more notice than a lot of school closures which gives you time to find somewhere else.

Don’t immediately make panic decisions but start thinking what you want to do. Also if a job comes up before the summer then go for it - yes it can feel rotten jumping a sinking ship but your priority is you.

Are you teaching or support staff?

Motnight · 23/01/2026 06:58

Sorry to read that @Backtoreality1. Is it the end of the academic year that the school is shutting? Are you eligible for a redundancy payment.

I am in an organisation which announced over 10 months ago that it was merging with another organisation and there would be redundancies and still we know sod all about our jobs. I would say don't underestimate the stress and pressure you and others will feel over the coming months. Unless you are due a payout that makes it worth it I personally would be looking for another job now. You owe your employer nothing in this type of situation.

Fibreisyourfriend · 23/01/2026 07:02

I'm so sorry to hear that. Devastating for all involved, when will the parents and children be informed? That will mean more tears I'm sure as they will be so upset losing their teachers.
Well labour I hope you're happy that your policy results in closing schools. When a private school closed locally some of the teachers moved to other local private schools where the children were moving to. I wish you the best of luck finding a new job and the strength to see you through the rest of the school year. Flowers

lifesdarkmoth · 23/01/2026 07:06

So sorry. I take it the Labour government’s policies will have contributed to this. They should be ashamed of themselves.

So many of these posts. Employers have obviously waited till after Christmas to tell staff. Know my employer did. Email waiting on first day back at work.

Sympathy OP.

Beetrootsmoothie · 23/01/2026 07:19

The same thing happened to the school where I worked with 3 weeks notice, I'd prefer not to go into detail here but please pm me and I will outline anything I think might be useful to know.
