Pretty sure that we are going to be shutting down - but whether with immediate effect not sure. Its been a horrible day as we were informed about the meeting first thing this morning, so you can imagine how much work is getting done! Only one topic of conversation and its all going round in circles which is driving me crazy.

OP posts:

Sorry to read this and a thought for you and all the staff and children. Hope the period of notice helps in finding another job.

As I thought - school closing at end of year - so many children having to change school and so many staff who are so dedicated losing their job and in some cases their home. The meeting was devastating and very poorly prepared.

They always are. Never seen this done in a decent way.

I'm so sorry, OP. But if you work in a school, you'll be very employable with those skills.

ThatIsABigSon · 23/01/2026 07:32

I assume a private school starting with the letter R? Very sorry to hear, I hope those affected soon find new roles/happy homes.

Bitsandbobs2 · 23/01/2026 07:41

It's new thread every single day - lots of people are being made redundant....
My friend works for public sector and they closing 4 departments out of 6 at her work.

NameChangeAgainto · 23/01/2026 07:43

Can't believe it. Ashamed to have voted Labour. Fingers crossed those young people in year 12 and 10 won't be affected badly for life by this nonsense

Rainbow1901 · 23/01/2026 07:44

I'm so sorry to hear that OP. Been there and done that but in my case we knew the college would see out its current cohort of students for their A Levels so had two years to prepare for it. It is devastating for staff and students alike.
I hope you all get the help and support you need as you all move forward while this is going on.

Notarealblonde · 23/01/2026 07:45

Sorry to hear this.
A popular establishment near me has shockingly just shut too. Im guessing this is all to do with the cost of living crisis and poorly run government.

Quiethelper · 23/01/2026 07:53

I’m guessing a school in the Cotswolds. sorry this has happened. I hope you get a good redundancy package. My kids went for a couple of years. It was a nice place years ago - not sure about it more recently. But I’m sad for you all x

Runningupthehillagain · 23/01/2026 07:54

Op I know you’re school and I am so sorry to you and all the staff pupils and parents involved.

We had considered it for our DC - it’s been a school for so long, it’s utterly devastating for all concerned.

Labour need to answer for this. Where will the children end up. Year groups admissions are closed in local schools - and many private schools don’t have capacity.

Dancingsquirrels · 23/01/2026 08:00

Stay strong OP. I was made redundant some years ago and it was v distressing

But, I changed direction slightly and now work better hours in a role i love

My experience is not unusual

Good luck

It must be a private school which means some staff (house mums if its boarding etc) have accommodation on site.

If a state school closed it would be a much longer process of dwindling numbers, downsizing or academisation.

A couple of start primaries in our borough closed with about six months notice. They’re just running out of kids.

I do blame labour introduction of 20% on private schools. They claimed this money would be used to support state schools - it hasn’t. As a result of many private schools shutting many pupils with high SEN needs or other needs, are now fighting for support and putting even more pressure on local state schools. A private school near us had over 200 SEN pupils and when it closed nearly all joined state schools. Already anxious at their school closing many found there was no room in local state schools (both huge secondary near us were totally full), the already stressed resources from the SENCO - there just isn’t the resources in place neither physically or financially to support this pupils in place.

I was wondering this too. The announcement to the public was only made y’day, so I’m hoping this isn’t the school, as I would hope the staff were informed in advance.

Edited to add: I’m assuming I have the correct school, where the prep is closing, and the older years are merging.

Maybe.
Or maybe the declining birthrate in the UK?

Fulmine · 23/01/2026 08:23

Are you in Bath, OP?

More likely this, it's not that unusual to see LA schools closed because of falling pupil numbers. Lots of comments around it being a private school and the vat rates but private schools aren't immune to falling birth rates.

I know of a few businesses having to close due to the government's new tax per worker policies, some small so not so, it's an added tax that the companies just can't afford to pay.

Goatymum · 23/01/2026 08:28

Sorry to hear that. I know of a couple of settings that have closed or are closing this academic year. It’s really sad for the staff involved and the kids- (I worked closely with one and it was also handled badly by the ‘powers that be’).

Blinkingbother · 23/01/2026 08:40

I’m so sorry. Labour are just awful - they’ve tanked the economy & jobs market. Dh has been made redundant too - and it seems there are daily threads re this at the moment….not any comfort but you’re not alone. How can a labour government be taken seriously when they are increasing unemployment🤷🏼‍♀️. I don’t want reform but I certainly don’t want these muppets either!!!

Northerngirl821 · 23/01/2026 08:42

My son’s previous state primary closed due to falling birth rates and other primary schools locally are also at threat so we’re worried we’re going to have to go through it all again. I suspect the falling numbers are having an impact on private schools in addition to the VAT.

Funny how it’s always the private schools closing that make the headlines though.

kelsaecobbles · 23/01/2026 08:49

Don’t make this a political football - because it’s a horrible situation for OP

the seeds were sown some time ago with no one wanting to pay more taxes ( or even able to due to them giving their money to banks to pay mortgages on overpriced houses ) . Collectively we are all to blame.

OP is not alone though - there are many rural schools and nurseries facing similar problems - falling pupil numbers, in many cases failing and inefficient buildings that would cost to repair, huge rise in SEN needs driving cost challenges. What is a paper exercise to balance the books in the office has hard effects on people’s lives. Not just the teachers and pupils but also the local community suffers

fluffythecat1 · 23/01/2026 08:52

The prep for our private secondary school is moving onto the secondary school site in September in order to cut costs. Glad that our son is finishing in July, the site is already cramped and I can see no benefit in cramming circa 80 much younger children onto it for either the younger or older pupils.

Absolutely.

My LA has closed over 20 schools since 2014, the vast majority of them in the last 10 years of the Conservative government.

Less children, insufficient money for a school to function. Governing boards unable to meet the deficit and illegal to run, without a full recovery plan to right the debts.
It has ripped the heart out of local communities, especially villages where the school was the only community facility.

And in addition, those that are managing to scrape through are doing so with one headteacher leading three or four schools.

Falling birth rates and Conservative government budget cuts!

A joke I hope. Please read my local situation, above!

Sorry to hear this. So many schools affected by the VAT on education policy.
