Sad situation with mouse

CloudyYellow · 21/01/2026 22:03

Found a mouse in an empty plant pot in the house. I am an animal lover but don't want a mouse living in my house. If I release it into the garden it will die of cold.
Any suggestions?

You don't have any options other than put it outside or stick it in a cage as a pet.

Or you could put it in the freezer and it'll go to sleep die.

It's probably came in from outside, just put it back out.

Tootjaskoot · 21/01/2026 22:07

Could you transfer the plant pot and the mouse to a box in the garden and insulate it with some blankets/ newspaper etc?

How long is the tail relative to the body? If it's a field mouse I'd take it to a wooded area first thing in the morning or a park (if you have a walled garden area in it) and release beside some hedges.

Bunnymcgee · 21/01/2026 22:11

Post about it on your local facebook group and you will either get some kind-hearted weirdo taking it off your hands to care for or some not-so-kind-hearted weirdo who wants it to feed to their snake.

FionnulaTheCooler · 21/01/2026 22:11

Release it as far from your house as you can or it'll just come back in. They survive the cold in the wild so they must be fairly hardy. Get pest control in to block up any entryways into your house, unless it was your bastard cat that brought it in as a "present" like my dear departed cat was fond of doing.

ImmortalJillyCooper · 21/01/2026 22:12

As an animal lover, do you also like foxes? You could give them a tasty breakfast. Or perhaps just an amuse bouche…

Ihavelostthegame · 21/01/2026 22:12

For real? It’s a mouse it won’t die from flipping cold if you release it outside! It’s a wild mouse.

KarmenPQZ · 21/01/2026 22:13

If you release the mouse outside in your garden or close by it will almost certainly just find its way back into your house. You have to take it much further away than you think

suki1964 · 21/01/2026 22:14

Why would it die of cold unless it was poorly?

Out cat brings them and voles in most nights and if we get to them in time, out. they go - they soon scurry to a hedge, pile of leaves, woodpile ....

FancyCatSlave · 21/01/2026 22:16

It won’t die from cold outside unless you are living somewhere that’s -20.

There’s plenty of mice in my garden, all fine in winter. They find places to hide. The shed is popular, as is the wood store.

My cats catch at least 6 a day between them, many varieties. Plus shrews. Our garden is littered with mice in various stages of decomposition.

Or eat it themselves...
Pop it outside OP, that's probably where it's come from.

StrangerThingsHappenRoundTheTwist · 21/01/2026 22:17

It won't freeze to death and if it does... that's nature

Take it to the local park so it doesn't just come back in

StillCreatingAName · 21/01/2026 22:18

Pop this on Scotsnet in time for Sunday.

WTF?

@CloudyYellow don't do any of this.

Put him in a shed or garage, or even outside as it's not really that cold at the moment. Mice can (and do) live outside. Don't put him in a cage, or the bloody freezer!

Motomum23 · 21/01/2026 22:19

Take it a few miles away and let it loose. I had a rat finding its way into my kitchen (it ate through fresh concrete to find a way back in and then through my oven vent... I caught it in a humane trap and drove it a good few miles away - hopefully it won't come back!)

Runnersandtoms · 21/01/2026 22:21

There's never just one mouse, check everywhere you can for a nest. Although they're cute they're a menace and will eat literally everything (including clothing) so you really must get them out of your house.

Goldenbear · 21/01/2026 22:21

It's nice you care about the mouse.

LaBarucci · 21/01/2026 22:42

No, it isn't sad. Mice in the house are nothing to get sentimental about. Get it out of your home now, call Rentokil or some other professionals and get every possible entryway into your home blocked. There is never just one mouse, only mice, and a mouse infestation will turn into an endless battle going on for months if not years. Mouse droppings will pile up exactly where you can't get at them, since mice pee everywhere the place will start to smell, every time you go into the kitchen you'll be greeted with a little brown horror scuttling off to hide under the fridge or any other nook or cranny which they've made their own cosy little domain. Trapping them is a disgusting business: although I did find traps which lured the mice in through a little trapdoor which slammed shut, it was still distasteful and unpleasant - and never finally got rid of them.

caravantulips · 21/01/2026 22:42

Put him in a secure box and drive him to a field a couple of miles away. I always release mine with a handful of cereal/raisins so they have a little snack to get them settled into their new home. But then I am a big softee

Kimura · 21/01/2026 22:44

I knew an old lady who had a similar problem - she'd tried everything, and ended up having to swallow the mouse.

Although it wriggled and jiggled and tickled inside her, so she subsequently needed to swallow a cat to deal with the mouse, and some time later she swallowed a dog to remedy the whole cat situation.

whatcanthematterbe81 · 21/01/2026 22:46

A fox or cat will get it before it dies from the cold

Who’s driving a few miles away at 10pm 😂

NorthXNorthWest · 21/01/2026 22:51

If there is one. There is likely more. Check for poo - look like black grain of rice.

CloudyYellow · 21/01/2026 22:52

Unfortunately no car and live in a city. Worried there will be more.

I have given it something to eat and some bedding. Will take it to a park tomorrow.

I caught one in my house and relocated it to the greenhouse. Told it never to come back and it didn’t :)
