I don’t mind getting wet

I cycle to work rain or shine and if I get wet I hardly think about it. My colleagues however make such a drama of the rain looking to make out it’s an issue for me when it just is not. Our office is on a trading estate with a really good safe cycle lane into it. Once I reluctantly accepted a lift in stormy weather, it took absolutely ages stuck in traffic, and now when it’s raining that colleague rolls his eyes and says “looks like you’ll be needing a lift” even though I’ve never asked. I know they think they are saving the day but I don’t even care about getting wet and wish they would mind their own business.

So tell them no thank you, I have my bike. I don't want a lift.

CurlewKate · 21/01/2026 09:09

Doesn’t it depend on what you’re wearing? (I thought this was going to turn out to have been written by my cat, who, contrary to stereotype LOVES going out in the rain and getting soaked.)

Runlikesomeoneleftgateopen · 21/01/2026 09:10

I am exact same, and l also cycle, have always cycled in any kind of weather.
It makes me feel alive.
I'm the one with the wild frizzy hair and rosy red cheeks whilst colleagues all immaculate and polished.
I'm also the happiest.

HundredsandHundreds · 21/01/2026 09:12

I walk or cycle everywhere. I dress for it. Lots of my colleagues do the same, though. Much faster and more efficient.

MathsMum3 · 21/01/2026 09:14

My DP is the same. Cycle commutes whatever the weather, wears suitable clothing. If anyone comments, he always says "I'm not made of sugar".

alittlequinnie · 21/01/2026 09:15

I cycle to work too OP - in all weathers. The only thing that stops me is ice.

I read somewhere that if you cycle to work 5 days a week for a year you are likely to get proper soaked about 12 times a year and that sounds about right to me.

I don't mind getting wet either - I have a plastic sheet thingy that I put on the inside of my helmet and that keeps my hair dry so I can pin it up okay when I get to work.

When my colleagues ask me if I cycled in the rain I always say to them that "the first time you don't cycle to work because it is raining will be the last time you ever cycle in"

In the UK you can't rely on "good" weather to cycle in! :O

TheDandyLion · 21/01/2026 09:15

I used to cycle to work in a previous job all year in all weathers. Very few times did it actually poor down with rain on the commute. But people are miserable and can't cope with a bit of weather.

Statistically it's more likely to rain in the afternoon and by that time you're on the way home anyway.

ThreeMenInAVan · 21/01/2026 09:17

This reminds me of when colleagues would take pity on me for waiting at a bus stop, tilting their heads and saying ‘oh jump in, I’ll give you a lift!’ No, mate, I relish my bus ride with a book. Don’t care if it’s raining while I wait. Different choices. Leave me alone.

ChubbyPuffling · 21/01/2026 09:21

I walk everywhere, rarely get wet-wet.
Don't like it when my good leather shoes get soaked, feet stay dry, but it takes work to get the leather looking nice again.
But generally feels nice walking In a bit of rain. Stops the runners, the dog "wanderers", electric scooters and the cyclists taking up (<whispers> my) pavement space...

ASeatNextToMe · 21/01/2026 09:24

Just say you don’t want a lift and that you are happy to cycle bad weather. I don’t really understand the issue. They can’t force you into their car.

DuchessofStaffordshire · 21/01/2026 09:24

Yeah, skin's waterproof anyway. I'm a runner, a very sweaty one, and love running in the rain. It helps keep me cool and feels great. Wearing waterproof jackets just keeps all the warm sweaty moisture in which is much worse.

oscalo · 21/01/2026 09:28

My best purchase lately was a pair of waterproof trainers. That's the ONLY thing I dislike about wet weather - wet feet and socks! Otherwise it's just normal weather for us isn't it?

DrunkenKoala · 21/01/2026 09:33

Unfortunately there are some people who can’t handle others being happy about something that they themselves aren’t happy about, doesn’t matter if it’s about the rain, or where you go on holiday, or what your favourite coffee is, they try to put a negative spin on it - why? I don’t know but I can’t be arsed with people like that.

BlossomLeaves · 21/01/2026 09:35

I walk and cycle everywhere (don’t drive for medical reasons) and happy in and equipped for pretty much all weathers. Never ask for, expect or accept lifts. I do have a few colleagues seem to struggle with this a bit and make a lot of comments about how I couldn’t possibly walk in this weather etc and try to force me to accept lift. I think it’s just based on personal experience/expectations.

Spookyspaghetti · 21/01/2026 09:42

It’s a sensory thing for some people. I like to be wet in a swimming pool or shower but if I get soaked in the rain I would want to change or I would feel cold and miserable all day. In my student days I would always have holes in my shoes and I just absolutely hate having wet feet, I would try bringing spare socks etc

I am slightly envious of people like yourself who just aren’t bothered. You must enjoy hiking and walking in all weather. (I walk everywhere but have to push through the misery 😆)

Love to hear rain at night or if I’m inside!

MotherWol · 21/01/2026 09:45

Honestly, there are some people who just can’t imagine life outside of their car. Don’t take it to heart!

Nincompoo · 21/01/2026 09:46

I don’t mind it either, being outside in all
weathers makes you feel alive doesn’t it!

Wakemeupinapril · 21/01/2026 09:48

Most of our holidays include being wet.. Never the wrong weather just the wrong clothes.
Wouldn't swap Mull for any beaches!
Some people are literally fair weathered!
Glad you have found a safe route! As a driver I always shudder at cycles and 70 mile vans hurtling past...

Legomania · 21/01/2026 09:49

Your colleagues seem to lack imagination.

However, I wouldn't want to get too wet on the way to work because I don't like showing up to work looking like a wet dog if I've made the effort to look presentable. Sitting in damp clothes is also horrible

midgetastic · 21/01/2026 09:49

So it’s not true that you can lose weight as you get washed away?

Oopsylazy · 21/01/2026 09:50

Do you take a change of clothes in case you get wet? I can understand how seeing someone wet and in damp clothes then having to sit down to work all day would make some people feel uncomfortable- it’s like when I’m indoors and people have their coats on it makes me uncomfortable - it’s my problem but I wonder if it’s that?

My mother, despite having spent her childhood routinely walking and cycling long distances, is like this. I think she’s absorbed the idea from other people that it ‘looks poor’, as though you can’t afford a car, and is hence something that shouldn’t be regarded as normal, despite me routinely pointing out the hospital consultants who live all round us (we live close to three hospitals, so lots of our neighbours are senior medics) cycling and walking to work, because you can cross a pedestrian bridge and circumvent the traffic.

I don’t think she fully believed me until I introduced her to the surgeon who did my uncle’s heart valve replacement as he was parking his bike at the clinic.

Dress properly and you won’t be wet — waterproof coat, trousers if you’re cycling. One of my colleagues wears shorts to cycle in and only dresses for his working day once he gets to work.

Fleur405 · 21/01/2026 09:58

I WFH now but I used to walk about 2 miles to and from work. I used to get this too - like people felt terribly sorry for me not having a car (I chose not to have a car - I don’t need one and I like walking!).

It’s annoying sure but just say “No thank you, I enjoy my ride home” and keep doing it until they stop!

Toddlerteaplease · 21/01/2026 10:01

No such thing as bad weather, just bad clothing.
