I don’t mind getting wet

materialvision · 21/01/2026 09:02

I cycle to work rain or shine and if I get wet I hardly think about it. My colleagues however make such a drama of the rain looking to make out it’s an issue for me when it just is not. Our office is on a trading estate with a really good safe cycle lane into it. Once I reluctantly accepted a lift in stormy weather, it took absolutely ages stuck in traffic, and now when it’s raining that colleague rolls his eyes and says “looks like you’ll be needing a lift” even though I’ve never asked. I know they think they are saving the day but I don’t even care about getting wet and wish they would mind their own business.

Anyone who says there’s no such thing as bad weather, only inappropriate clothing, is lucky enough not to wear glasses. I am blind without mine and can’t wear contact lenses.

Even if someone doesn’t wear glasses there very much is such a thing as bad weather, otherwise people wouldn’t be dressing in a manner to protect themselves from it 😏

Nope. I wear glasses all the time and just buy a coat with a large enough hood to cover my eyes far enough, or use an umbrella. If you shop around in a good outdoor clothing store, you'll find coats with proper fitting hoods that don't restrict your vision yet offer enough protection to stop the raindrops blocking your vision, some have a kind of built in "peaked cap" type thing that is firm enough not to flop down over your eyes. Obviously, if you just buy "fashion" style coats from High Street fashion shops, you're buying for looks rather than function so no surprise that the hoods flap round or fall over your ears or won't stay put etc. Lots of walkers/ramblers wear glasses yet still manage to walk tens of miles on rainy days! So, my assertion of "inappropriate clothing" still stands!

Surely you are doing all that to protect yourself from bad weather?

It’s a silly saying. Of course weather is bad, so it’s better to dress appropriately for it.

@Badbadbunny

i want to look fashionable though. Comfort and practicality at all costs all the time is dull.

bumblingbovine49 · 21/01/2026 14:01

No I absolutely loathe it if I have to sit in wet clothes for ages. It males me me.cold uncomfortable and just generally very grumpy and unhappy. I hate even the process of changing out of the wet clothes

But congratulations op, tou are obviously a moraally superior human being to those of us who dislike standing around in the rain in soaking wet clothes getting cold Hmm

TBC99 · 21/01/2026 14:05

I love being out in the weather. Just back from an outdoor swim in rain and wind.

You do you OP

People have died when they've been in cars in storms too!!

Yes, and why is that? because weather can be bad, as the pp said. Saying there is no bad weather is stupid.

Melarus · 21/01/2026 14:31

No such thing as bad weather - only the "wrong" clothes!!

Nah, bad weather is bad all round in my book. I've got waterproof everything for when I'm cycling, and I still don't like going out in the rain. It's chilly, it's dark, it's depressing. It's like the entire world is crying.

And? I didn’t say they didn’t. I was replying to the poster who said there is no such thing as bad weather, only bad clothes when there obviously is bad weather. It was a stupid thing to say.

I don’t mind it either, being outside in all
weathers makes you feel alive doesn’t it!

It does. You feel more connected with your world than if you’re inside a tin box

AgnesX · 21/01/2026 15:04

Whatever floats your boat.

I hate getting wet although sometimes there's no getting round it. I seriously dislike getting wet on my way to work. On the way home not so much.

ThatCraftySquid · 21/01/2026 15:16

People are incredibly lazy and use any excuse to make themselves feel better.

There was a thread on here a while back where a couple of posters were falling over themselves to laugh at the idea of people going for a run in the rain. Because apparently runners can only run in fair weather. In the UK no less 😂

ThatCraftySquid · 21/01/2026 15:18

I don't like the rain, and I don't like getting wet, but I dislike being inactive more. So you just do it anyway. I can't see why people think it's such a big deal

Agreed! And can also afford good waterproof clothing.

I have asthma and the wet weather makes it worse so I hate weather

CardiOnCardiOff · 21/01/2026 15:21

I hate getting too wet on the bike even though I cycle lots of places. Waterproof trousers make me sweat too much and get damp anyway. I haven't found decent waterproof shoes and socks yet. My hair gets so so so frizzy and enormous, and the water ends up soaking through helmet and liner. There might be good clothes but it still seems to seep everywhere, and then you have to let bags and coats and clothes dry when you get there, which means spreading out everywhere. And backpacks or panniers still get wet.

But worse is glasses. Always spotty and dripping and makes it hard to see, and often fogged up too, though I have a fog spray that helps with that.

And Raynaud's turn my fingers white even when it's supposedly warm out, very painful. And when it's cold, that's another story.

I live in a city with huge potholes, very dangerous at the best of times for cyclists, and also massive puddles along the edges of the road that drench you if you are a pedestrian, and hide mystery holes and objects if you are a cyclist, even when it's not that heavy rain. I have a fear of being knocked off by hitting potholes as I've already had broken wrists, as well of course as punctures (in my 'puncture resist' tyres).

So while I'm fine with anyone who wants to cycle in the rain, and can appreciate why they might like it, I do also have a lot of sympathy for fair-weather cyclists who don't want to cycle on the really wet days - there are lots of good reasons for that too. I wouldn't keep pestering someone who wanted to cycle to accept a lift, but I might offer the first time in case they do want one.

oscalo · 21/01/2026 09:28

My best purchase lately was a pair of waterproof trainers. That's the ONLY thing I dislike about wet weather - wet feet and socks! Otherwise it's just normal weather for us isn't it?

Oooh can you recommend a trainer brand that is genuinely water proof? I have a long walk on my commute which I love except for the wet feet issues!

WhatNoRaisins · 21/01/2026 16:14

I'm all for good quality weatherproof clothing but it's never going to be the solution to all weather conditions. Sometimes it's unpleasant no matter what you're wearing.

Nor me.
Years of farming, having horses and walking dogs meant you just got on with it.
And even more years of district nursing in all weathers meant you simply wore appropriate clothing, shoes etc.
You won’t dissolve if you get wet ffs!

FleetingPhilosophy · 21/01/2026 16:37

I walk in the rain a lot as I live in London and certainly don’t drive to work in central London or to go out. But I hate the rain because I can’t see as it falls on my glasses, sometimes even with an umbrella. That’s the bit I hate.

I have not read the full thread, but wonder if it’s gone the same way as those performative coldweather threads. With people talk about sweating at 12°C and their thermostat not coming on until it is 8° C, going on about it like it’s a virtue.

I imagine there have been a few of those twee comments saying, there is no such thing as bad weather just the wrong clothes…

Middlemarch123 · 21/01/2026 16:37

Pouring down where I am, walked dogs, we all dressed for it, pug rocking her new waterproof leopard print coat, all good. Better to be outside rather than sat in. Good for mood this time of year.

Skybluepinky · 21/01/2026 18:06

Maybe they are saying that you look messy whilst at work.

sorryIdidntmeanto · 21/01/2026 19:16

I feel very privileged to be able to walk to work. I have never once driven just because of rain. So I get it.

Just as stupid as people saying there's no such thing as bad clothing.

On very rare extreme weather days - yes. But the vast majority of "wet" days in the UK are pretty mild, light, intermittent rain, not torrential downpours nor hurricanes, so sensible water/weather proof outer clothing is absolutely fine.
