To think we should get three “weather passes” a year

Slightly tongue in cheek and inspired by how disgusting this weather is, but I’d love three days a year where this weather means I could just stay in bed.

I’m fed up of being damp and cold!

I kind of get where you're coming from, tongue in cheek fine but.... it's just not how life works as an adult is it? Take annual leave if you're that desperate.

Which is exactly why I said it’s tongue in cheek and an ideal world type of scenario.

But do you save them in wi ter in hope for a glorious summer... or use them on horrible dreary days, then have to work in a heatwave?

I’d much rather be at work in a heatwave! Days like today make me want to hide under my duvet all day

I'm retired and I still think it's a great idea! There's always pressure to be doing something useful, and I do have to get up today, but looking at the driving rain really makes me wish I could just stay in bed with the cat.

Mirrorx · 21/01/2026 08:53

I'd rather have them for when it's too hot to work!

It’s absolutely horrible out there. Somehow both misty rain and driving rain

I agree, but think we need much more than 3 days. Maybe 3 for snow, 3 for rain, 3 for cold, 3 for heat, and 3 for ice. That might cover it. Although I am in Yorkshire, so it's probably easier to count the days when the weather is mild and comfortable than the rest!

TartanMammy · 21/01/2026 09:16

I work from home mostly, can I still use the weather pass? 😄
Dp works in a hospital, there is no way he could use the weather pass.

I like the idea of having a few days discretionary leave to use at short notice for no reason other than not fancying work today. All my leave is swallowed by school holidays and it would be so nice to have a 'me' day.

Or what if you use them in January during a storm / heavy rain but then get even worse weather in February?

RoseInBloome7 · 21/01/2026 10:15

I’d much rather be at work in a heat wave! Air conditioning mid menopause whilst getting paid ☺️

I think that means you get his passes too.

I take most of my AL in winter because I don't want to be getting up on cold, dark, rainy days like today and then be at work in a hospital surrounded by poorly patients! That said, it is NOT nice at work during the summer, because it is unbearably hot. But at least in the summer when I finish my shift at two there is time to enjoy the weather (or hide in my cool lounge). And it's much more invigorating being in work by 7 when it's sunny and the air is fresh :-D And people aren't so sick, so I stand by my winter leave!

Bjorkdidit · 21/01/2026 10:25

I'd have one to stay in bed and read and cuddle the cats when it's cold and dark and the other two for hot summer days so I can laze around in the sun and go for an outdoor swim as I hate being stuck inside when the weather is hot as it's too precious to waste.

The lake I swim in got stupidly popular last year such that you had to book in advance and every time I booked the weather was nowhere near as good as the days I didn't go. All I wanted was a few hours lazing in the sun pretending I was on holiday and a cooling swim every time I got too hot.

gannett · 21/01/2026 10:27

Another huge advantage of WFH is that you can do this whenever you please. I don't intend to leave the house for the rest of this week.

Bjorkdidit · 21/01/2026 10:38

Well no because you have to be at your desk and working.

Not staying in bed and relaxing or doing whatever you please.

I love this. Like playing Uno reverse card on the whole day.

I would also really like it for the kids as well to be honest. Some days when it's freezing and stormy, making them put on their school uniform (and don't even get me started on how unfit it is for winter weather!!) and go and sit on a cold chair and learn times tables seems so unnecessarily Victorian. I'd love just a couple of days a year to say you know what, sack it off, we're going to stay home and drink ovaltine and play with playdoh.

PistachioTiramisu · 21/01/2026 10:40

I know it's only a tongue in cheek thread, but the thinking behind it makes me worry! People these days seem to want to find any excuse not to go to work - duvet days, sickness, period days, menopause, maternity leave, sick kids, picking up/dropping off kids, birthday, 'just don't feel like it' days, etc. Come on people, you are paid to do a job - DO IT!!

CurlewKate · 21/01/2026 10:41

I think I’ll add that to the list of excellent policies I am going to introduce when I am, inevitably, world dictator. There will be a clause ensuring that you cannot be obliged to use them for snow days.

zurigo · 21/01/2026 10:42

Some workplaces do offer 'duvet days', where you can just decide not to go in at the last minute. I think it's a great idea, as long as there's a caveat that you can't take one when you have urgent stuff to do! Nice little perk IMO.

Eh? I get what you're saying about duvet days, birthdays, and just don't feel like it days, but sickness, maternity leave, and sick kids are all completely legit reasons to not be in work!

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 21/01/2026 10:44

I realise it is tongue in cheek but… I do think maybe up to three days where you can take annual leave at the last minute (assuming nothing urgent is happening) without judgment would be good.

I AM! I was just very grumpy about having to leave the house in weather that feels like -3 and driving rain and freezing winds that are ruining my skin. Still here.

Ideal idea!

I don’t have any leave to use this year but it would be lovely to do it if possible
