Watch / listen to local news. You’re more likely to hear an uplifting story about a local woman who is retiring from being a lollipop lady after 70 years, and local volunteer efforts to contribute to Localtown’s Britain in Bloom pitch and how you can get involved. Albeit it might be tempered by a story about frustrating roadworks on the only access route to the motorway.

UniquePinkSwan · 20/01/2026 09:33

Just don’t watch it. I never watch it and I’m very happy

OnlyMabelInTheBuilding · 20/01/2026 09:36

Just turn it off.

Archymum · 20/01/2026 09:39

Call me crazy, but given the fact that Trump is about to declare war with Europe, I think it's worth knowing about how that's going to impact each and every one of us in very real and scary ways.

Miranda65 · 20/01/2026 09:42

Stop watching. I gave up TV news early in the pandemic, because it was such a lot of twaddle. It's also bern very dumbed down for many years. I find that Radio 4 and a couple of decent newspapers keep me well-ibformed, and I never feel overwhelmed.

lizzohadsome · 20/01/2026 10:11

Hard to turn off when its all over social media and I live in northern ireland trust me my local news is just as bad 🤣🤣🤣🤣

Edited

Hmm my local news is also full of bad news! But I like to know what sort of crimes are being committed in my local area and whether there's a spate of car thefts, house break-ins, etc nearby.

youalright · 20/01/2026 10:16

Don't watch it haven't watched the news in years if anything significant happens you hear about it on here

DeftGoldHedgehog · 20/01/2026 10:26

Perspective helps, at the risk of sounding like a Billy Joel song there has always been something, even recently. When I was a kid, the Falklands were invaded, IRA were bombing the UK and there was the serious threat of nuclear war. Famine in sub-saharan Africa. Then as a teenager Iraq mark 1, there was a horrific war and massacre in former Yugoslavia, Rwanda, Somalia. A few years later 9/11, Afghanistan, Chechnya, Iraq #2, constant terror threat, austerity, Brexit, Covid, Ukraine, rise of the far right, Trump, Putin. Lots of other things I've forgotten. I try and stay away from it, and just watch the new once a week or so or my head can't hope with day to day things.

Countries have been at war for a very long time why are you just worried about Trump? Russia and Ukraine are still not great he's threatening nuclear bombs every other week

Archymum · 20/01/2026 13:47

A NATO country declaring war against another NATO country would lead to unprecedented worldwide chaos with deep and lasting repercussions for the whole world, in a way that is, apparently, not fully understood by most people because NATO has ensured so much stability across the Western world for so long.

Will you give a toss if the price of everything goes up 25%? Will you give a toss if Trump starts to drop bombs on Europe? Will you give a toss if life in the UK becomes unbearably difficult because it's impossible to access a lot of the things currently imported to the UK from America (cars, medicines, antibiotics, fuel, machinery) because we are at war with them?

Sorry? You couldn’t give a toss if oil supplies to Europe are stopped? That our technology is messed with to our detriment? You couldn't give a toss? How ignorant

Yeah, the news can't just be a series of nice things that have happened throughout the day. People need to know what's going on and usually it's not great news. Especially with trump in the whitehouse

Archymum · 20/01/2026 16:34

@Ahhhblissful do you have endless money and a protected personal supply of all resources in the world? Because if the answer to either of those questions is no, you need to give a toss. People who say "I don't follow politics" are about to realise that politics follows them.
