i know there’s a lot of opinions on “influencers” on here so I just want to clarify that I’m not posting anything like that, just my opinions on sports etc.

I see a lot of women my age being offered incredible opportunities after building a community doing this sort of thing - free tickets, free trips, etc etc. so I figured why not, I’ve got a lot of spare time and can put some effort into it.

My family are all pretty embarrassed by me. They seem to think it reflects badly on them and that if anyone finds out I’ll regret it. They’re all begging me to take the videos down and close down my page.

AIBU to do it?

Depends on what kind of "content" you're producing?

As I said in the first line of my post, I’m just mostly posting my opinions on sports. I also want to share about cooking but haven’t figured out how I can film that properly yet 😂

Are your family Amish or something? What kind of person is embarrassed by relatives being on SM, that's very odd

Unless you're going to reveal it's some kind of public fetish content what could be the problem?

Idontspeakgermansorry · 18/01/2026 14:02

So you're just posting videos of yourself talking about your sporting opinions? Are they at least well produced and edited? Or just you talking to your phone camera?

I probably would be a bit embarrassed, if this was my family member, yes.

Nope nothing like that, just me rambling about sport 😂 they think social media in general is a bit of a farce, they don’t engage with it at all

If I were to do something like this I wouldn’t tell anyone I knew in real life. People tend to want to pull you back down like crabs in a bucket.

Can you start again under an a different name not linked to any of your personal accounts?

Can I ask why? Just genuinely curious

I feel like it would be obvious it’s me because it’s my face 😂 my mentality is I’m going to give it until the end of the year and if it’s taken off, great. If not, it’s just something I tried and I had the confidence to post and back myself

What's your lighting and audio set up? Are you planning and editing the videos? What's your engagement strategy?

That’s okay, they’d be unlikely to see it. How do they know about it in the first place?

It's just odd and comes across as attention-seeking.

Unless you have some kind of a background in sports that makes you extra knowledgeable and your opinion worth listening to?

Badly produced videos are always a bit cringey too tbh. Can you clarify if you're just talking to your phone camera with zero editing?

I would look into learning some editing, if you really want to do this.

At the moment I’m just putting together videos of me talking, I have a few videos planned in my head and I’m planning on practicing some editing techniques with them. I’m trying to connect with people who are similar to me

You don’t need fancy setups OP. Clear sound and decent lighting will do. You also don’t need perfectly edited videos. People engage with accounts that feel real.

Yes at the moment I am.

I don’t think most of the people online have any formal qualifications in the things they post about. I’m posting my thoughts and experiences because I’ve seen multiple people become very successful doing it, so why not see if I can?

It’s actually fine to start off crappy. Chris Cowlin is a good example of a regular guy who shared his opinions and now gets interviewed by Sky Sports.

Mhhk · 18/01/2026 14:11

I find the whole thing cringe, but that is purely because I don’t use social media platforms. I view it as very attention seeking. That being said, I’m in the minority and most people are generally very onboard with social media.

I think you aren’t hurting anyone, so if it’s what you want, go for it. You only have one life. And if you make lots of money and it gets you lots of freebies and you enjoy it, then you might as well just do it. It’s nothing to do with anyone else, in that world all that matters is the followers.

tumbletoast · 18/01/2026 14:12

Oh and your opinions on sports - are these sports you understand? Are they controversial opinions? Informed opinions?

For instance, if my relative was posting long rambling videos on social media attempting to make witty remarks and commentate on tennis despite knowing absolutely nothing about tennis but expecting it to generate freebies for them - then I probably would be embarrassed and suggest they stop.

Dancingspleen1 · 18/01/2026 14:12

Everyone's got to start somewhere OP. It will be a process you'll get better at as you go along. Good luck I hope it works out for you.

I know quite a bit about them, watch them regularly, attend matches etc.

Yes, of course. I think I would still find it a bit cringey, if a family member started doing it though. Not that I'd try and stop them.

I think very very few people actually succeed doing this.

dollyblue01 · 18/01/2026 14:15

Do you know much about sport ?
also I’m a woman but find that most women’s sports presenters aren’t their because of their knowledge of sport and no one takes them seriously.
if you have the knowledge then great go for it.

Ring lights and external mics are not fancy. They absolutely are being used by "real" accounts.

Nobody wants to watch regular videos from someone who sounds like they're underwater/in a gale force wind or appears to be sitting in the dark.
