To play audio on my phone on train?

ThreeWordUsername · 17/01/2026 23:00

Would IBU to start loudly playing some ads for headphones from my crappy tinny phone speakers on the train?

Given the number of other people blaring shite from their own they are unlikely to be affected much tbh.

My most authoritarian opinion is, if after being asked once.people don't use headphones or turn the phone off , it should be legal to take their device and destroy it in front of them.

We were once tormented by a very annoyoing Amercian woman on the Eurostar who carried out numerous phone calls on loudspeaker. Then one hero bloke just started joining in. Whe she asked him what he was doing, he just looked at her straight faced and said "You included me on this call so I thought you might want my opinion"

Honestly no, i didn't want to get into anything with her. She seemed like the sort of person who would have had no qualms in arguing back and I honestly can't face that aggro, also knowing I would see her week after week. I'm a peacekeeper and I just don't really have it in me to be calling people out.

Then you can’t really complain if you’re not prepared to stand up for yourself in non-threatening circumstances!
If she starts giving aggro back, all you need to do is calmly and politely repeat that it’s inconsiderate to make other people listen to your scrolling.

Whilst that may not have helped, a set of Bluetooth headphones can be bought for £20ish which is surely affordable for people with iPhones?

Even if I genuinely couldn't afford headphones/earbuds I can't imagine a scenario when I would willingly inflict my choice of audio on a carriage full of strangers around me.

Edited

Agree. I’ve just got an iPhone 16e and I ordered some headphones from Amazon for £7 the other day.

SanFairyAnnie · 18/01/2026 10:05

Only if it's the Queen of the Night aria and you sing along to it.

I am not sure I agree. Her behaviour is poor, it's not my fault in some way because I haven't challenged her. It's on her.

You say non-threatening but quite honestly for a peacekeeping introvert, challenging a complete stranger who clearly has zero regard for others is quite formidable. It's a stress I don't need to invite into my life.

Her behaviour is selfish and annoying. I didn't want to challenge it. That doesn't mean I am not allowed to find it selfish and annoying.

This Is a good idea. Perhaps the train could run some audio announcements and have some posters just like we get in the cinemas . Please refrain from playing music without headphones and having long phone conversations. Please be mindful of your fellow passengers. Wouldn’t take much really.

This raises a good point. It shouldn’t have to be our problem to fix. Companies always find ways to shift costs onto individuals. Bloody infuriating.

A big part of the problem is how companies cut back on staff to reduce costs/ increase profits and this applies specifically to train companies. In days gone past having more train staff was a deterrent to rude train behaviour. Just the presence of an authority figure was helpful. I even remember the old buses in London with the open back entrance and the ticket collector (!) who could kick off unruly teenagers. Fewer and fewer staff emboldens bad behaviour.

A widespread campaign against noise pollution, like there have been to promote the use of seat belts and to stop drink driving, is a good idea and could potentially shift attitudes. I have seen a real societal shift in those 2 areas in my lifetime. There are still people who don't bother with seat belts and who drink and drive but they are outliers.

Until that happens, people will only stop blasting out noise on their phones if other people step up and speak out. I understand that the thought of confrontation can make people anxious. I wouldn't expect anyone who has previously been abused for asking someone to use headphones to do so again if they didn't feel able to.

But I do get really frustrated when so many people hate it but just sit and seethe instead of using their voices. Those of us who do ask people to use headphones find that everyone/virtually everyone we ask will do so. Some will be apologetic. Some will be grumpy. But generally, they do as they're told.

I'm a teacher and we often get reminded on INSETs that behaviour we ignore is behaviour we condone. The same is absolutely true outside of schools.

We had 3 years of constant and pervasive advertising and campaigning reminding people to cover their mouths when they cough. I can’t go out in public without seeing someone hacking their germs out at everyone unfortunate enough to be within their proximity. Humans are in general stupid and inconsiderate it seems so I have no faith that a campaign would work.

Utterly brilliant.

EmpressaurusKitty · 18/01/2026 10:10

There are posters about it on the tube now, but a lot of the idiots who do it don’t notice, don’t care or assume it can’t possibly apply to them.

I agree that if comedians started taking the piss out of them it might make a difference. Also, stop adding bloody sound effects to games. They don’t need them.

Blame the phone manufacturers, especially Apple who started it, for removing the headphone jack and making people have to buy earbuds which are stupidly expensive. I haven't bought any (but I don't play stuff out loud).

At least you can get headphone adaptors for phones now.

You can buy earphones with a usb c fitting cheap now. They’re about a £5 in b&m.

I'm not seriously going to do it but for fuck's sake they're driving me insane. Who the hell thinks this is an OK thing to do in a shared space? (Answer: about half the train apparently)

Feeling your pain OP. Such ignorant behaviour!

IdleThoughts · 18/01/2026 10:23

Why don't you have noise cancelling headphones? I wouldn't get on public transport without them, you literally can't hear anything around you.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 18/01/2026 10:24

What I hate most on buses is people bringing their horrible smelly, fatty fast food on board to eat - and then as often as not, leaving the greasy wrappings behind.
I have no hesitation in using the C word for them - no, not that word - I mean CHAV.

Augarden · 18/01/2026 10:24

This should be the next Mumsnet campaign. It's completely unacceptable and there's no excuse, but I've seen young and old, men and women, people of all races do it. My husband and I have had some success asking people to turn it off. You assume they are so deliberately violating social norms that they'll kick off, but actually in most cases they seem genuinely ignorant that it was annoying anyone. It's bizarre but I do think awareness of how unacceptable it is would have some effect.

Some people just can't go two minutes without their hit of TikTok!

AlecTrevelyan006 · 18/01/2026 10:26

All train carriages should be 'quiet carriages'.

I generally consider myself a reasonable person, but I do think people who play stuff loudly on their phones on public transport should receive the death penalty.

🤣🤣🤣🤣

LargeJugs · 18/01/2026 10:27

Get a pair of headphones you prick.

or if it’s a reverse … the person who did that is a prick.

totally agree, it really does seem to span society

i still can't wrap my head around how we got to a stage where fully grown adults need to be told that listening to things out loud in a public place is really rude and annoying but here we are...

You can buy cheaper ones. They just use bluetooth to attach. No one needs expensive ones.

TKMAXX even offer some designer ones cheap like DKNY or guess under £20. B & Ms do them even cheaper. If can afford a phone, can afford some cheap bluetooth pod earphones.

Yes but that doesn’t stop people from being antisocial and inconsiderate. The onus shouldn’t be on everyone else to cut off one of their senses.

This is why I never travel without headphones. I don’t want to listen to other people’s music, conversations, kids or breathing.

This 100%

Yes, but then you’re the person who’s still sitting there when everyone else is getting off because they heard the announcement about a diversion / the bus terminating at this stop / the tube on the next platform leaving sooner.

Normandy144 · 18/01/2026 10:43

For those suggesting that comedians address the issue, you should check out Russell Kane who absolutely nails it on his Instagram with a post for headphone deniers. There's actually an official name for the condition it's called chronic underperception neurological tendancy. Not sure if this link will work but do check it out as it is quite a serious condition but luckily there is a cure.😂

You get a lot of sound leakage with cheap headphones which can be just as irritating as someone playing audio without them.

Not really, they are just playing stupidly loud when you hear that. You cant hear anything at a decent volume from the cheap £15 bluetooth earphone I take out.

I think even going back 20 years and talking about £1 poundshop earphones, at a normal volume you wouldnt be able to hear them over the bus sounds - maybe the slightest hint if you were sat next to them and really unlucky.
