I just got pulled over for doing 32 in a 30

I’m shaking as I write this. I just drove out to walk the dogs and on my way back a police car pulled me over. I was doing 32 in a 30 and he said I was “lucky” that he’s not choosing to prosecute me over this.

AIBU or is this total overkill? It’s a dry sunny day, the roads are relatively quiet and I wasn’t driving erratically.

She didn't actually but often police travel in pairs so that's just me.

Do remember that your speed dial would have been showing 35+. It’s just the speed trap recorded you at 32.

This is not correct.

Nolongera · 17/01/2026 16:13

What model of car do you have that won't go up a hill at 20mph?

I had this experience on the same steep hill doing school runs in a Citroen and a Toyota.

You can do all the mental gymnastics you want but you were speeding. I don’t really know what you want from this thread. It’s basic maths. 32 is more than 30, and you were meant to be driving at 30. Consider yourself lucky a speed camera didn’t clock you - I did the same years ago, the exact same mph in a 30 area and had to go on a driving awareness course. Just suck it up and move on (within the speed limit of course).

I bet you’re fun at parties.

Bluedenimdoglover · 17/01/2026 16:26

It's a legal limit, not a suggestion. Get over it.

Bollocks. That's not how cars work.

MartySupremeisascream · 17/01/2026 16:27

I think the main reason police engage in this type of nonsense is to reach their targets. It's lazy policing.

Boomer55 · 17/01/2026 16:30

Stick to the speed limit. You won’t get pulled over, so no shaking needed.

Sorted.✔️

What target did they reach here, given all that happened was OP got a telling off?

LadyLapsang · 17/01/2026 16:35

I suppose they are pulling over everyone who is speeding and / or driving erratically and / or using their phone. Hopefully they will be testing for drink and drug driving at the same time. Also, a chance to check the vehicle is roadworthy.

Heyhelga · 17/01/2026 16:36

He's given you a warning. Heed the warning, accept some accountability, and stop whinging.

Bollocks. That's not how cars work.

Either the PP is not in full control of their car, or the manufacturer managed to bypass all Construction and Use regulations to sell a faulty model.

Where should I place your bet ?

Surely 'lazy policing' would have been them seeing the OP breaking the law (no it's not the crime of the century but 32 is definitely more than 30), and thinking 'Sod it, it's only speeding by a little bit, let's not bother'? And what 'target' are they going to hit by...not taking any further action?

Nolongera · 17/01/2026 16:43

The OP has stated he was on his own.

Want " target " was he hitting if he only gave a warning?

CraftyMintHedgehog · 17/01/2026 16:53

ThatGladTiger · 17/01/2026 13:55

This is really black and white.

32mph in a 30mph zone is speeding. You can’t argue this 🤷🏽‍♀️

Yes over the top by the policeman in my view. But, factually you were speeding.

I think the key thing here is the totally over-the-top response for just a couple of mph over.

Police time costs money. It's not just the time to pull the OP over, but the time they will then spend doing paperwork to document this and get a box ticked. If you have ever been a victim of crime, it is infuriating when the police aren't interested in anything other than handing you a crime reference number.

I would imagine that most the people that voted YANBU here would much rather see police back on the streets, rather than wasting time pulling people over for going 2 mph over the speed limit.

oncemoreuntothebeachdearfriends · 17/01/2026 16:53

I've read a lot of nonsense on this thread.
There is no 10% margin for error.
32 mph is speeding and is enforceable - ask me how I know.

Having "nothing better to do" ? Preventing possible death seems very worthwhile to me.

I’m happy to think that you know about speeding enforcement.

But “possible death” would apply to someone doing 30mph or 28mph, or 26mph, etc. If you want to prevent “possible death” you’d need to lower the speed limit to about 5mph.

A lot of roads near me have become 20mph from being 30mph. Presumably all the people who used to lawfully drive at 30mph were also encouraging “possible death” - after all they were busting what is now the ‘appropriate’ limit.

Flowerlovinglady · 17/01/2026 17:12

I think this is overkill but you didn't get prosecuted or even get offered to do a course so it is just to warn you, I think - probably part of some speed awareness initiative. If you're worried you could use the speed limiter on the car if you have one? I'd never heard of it but my husband was close to maxing his points and decided to turn his on and it has saved him for getting further penalty points. (Penalty points are quite easy to get for anyone who regularly drives on motorways - the variable speed limits can be hard to keep track of).

DisabledDemon · 17/01/2026 17:16

Seems like overkill to me. I don't know anyone who, at some point, hasn't suddenly realised that their speed has crept up a bit and had to slow down.

MyLimeGuide · 17/01/2026 17:18

Another2356 · 17/01/2026 14:11

dialdrunkforyou · 17/01/2026 13:16

But I was.

You were doing more than the speed limit. How does that make you innocent of speeding?

take it as a lesson and be more mindful of your speed.

Saladbrains · 17/01/2026 17:25

SeanutBrittleOnToastedCoral · 17/01/2026 13:07

People saying op is BU, how is that supposed to work with an analogue speedo? You wouldn’t be able to even see if it’s 2mph over.

32 is not dangerous and not enforceable. Ridiculous to pull someone over for that.

The way it’s supposed to work is you drive AT or BELOW the speed LIMIT.

If you’re not capable of keeping to that rule then perhaps use the functionality in so many cars now of either:
a) the speed limiter
b) cruise control

Both of which will help on downhill stretches by either giving an audible warning or by disengaging themselves with an indication, to alert the driver to needing to monitor and reduce the speed.

It’s only driving, and millions of us do it every day. Not rocket science.

If the police didn’t enforce speed limits how can pedestrians and other motorists hope to be safe when drivers would have monitor their own speed.

What’s your alternative idea…

supersop60 · 17/01/2026 17:25

The stopping distance at 30mph is 75ft (assuming good conditions and an alert driver).
The stopping distance at 32 mph is 80 ft which could be the difference between hitting a person or not.
Being pulled over for 32 does seem excessive to me, but OP cannot deny being over the limit.

VWT7 · 17/01/2026 17:25

You are correct OP, even a slight incline on the road surface can affect speed, in the fractional time it takes to check rear and side mirrors then check speed, it can change by this amount.

(In a new vehicle with different engine sounds, I’m having to check myself contantly)
