I just got pulled over for doing 32 in a 30

I’m shaking as I write this. I just drove out to walk the dogs and on my way back a police car pulled me over. I was doing 32 in a 30 and he said I was “lucky” that he’s not choosing to prosecute me over this.

AIBU or is this total overkill? It’s a dry sunny day, the roads are relatively quiet and I wasn’t driving erratically.

Where does it say they're a traffic cop?

It doesn't, but they're generally the ones doing speed checks.

PluckyChancer · 17/01/2026 15:49

I had similar happen to me but the policeman (Garda) showed me his speed gun and said I was doing 72 in the previous 60kmh zone. (Irish roads)

I was bemused as I’m not a speeder, but accepted it must be true. 🤷🏻‍♀️

However, he subsequently lied on the paperwork and stated I was doing 72 in the earlier 50kph zone. I knew that wasn’t true as I’d been overtaken by a white van on that section of road so I wrote and disputed it. There was no cctv and I didn’t have a dash cam so no other evidence.

Surprise surprise, they believed the corrupt policeman and presumably the speeding white van man gets to speed away another day. 😡

just regular police most of the time

LetMeGoogleThat · 17/01/2026 13:48

Absolutely correct! The road traffic officer, who's actual job is to police the road, should have been out righting all the other wrongs in the entire world. Instead, there he is bullying poor OP for her heavy right foot 🙄

Yes, exactly. Can't stand bullies. Boil my blood 😡

just regular police most of the time

So not first response or detectives, or those responsible for dealing with the crimes PP mentioned above then.

Biscuits4 · 17/01/2026 15:51

DH was pulled over many years ago for doing 33 in a 30 mile zone. It was late at night, so police probably hoping to get drink drivers.

He was asked where he was going and he told them he was taking his MIL and DM home - they peered in the back, obviously took pity on him just pointing out speed limit and was told he had better get them home!

Balloonhearts · 17/01/2026 15:52

Look it's one of those things. You did it. You aren't innocent, the limit is 30, you were over it. He had every right to stop you and did nothing wrong. He acknowledged that it was only slightly over by not giving you a ticket. Just suck it up, accept it was fair and move on.

I'm not judging you. I'm forever speeding. As you say, you're paying more attention to the road than your speedo. I'm always catching myself coasting along a few miles over. But if I get caught, it's fair enough. Not realising I was doing it doesn't mean I wasn't.

This is exactly it. He’s a man on his own, seen a lone woman doing 32 and decided to exercise a power trip.

So what is the rule for police pulling people over? A male officer can't pull over a woman for speeding? Is a female officer allowed to pull a man over?
There were 2 male officers when I was pulled over and I was 22 at the time but I was able to accept if I hadn't broken the speed limit I wouldn't have had to deal them at all.
If you don't speed you won't have to worry about it. Having said that it does seem petty as it was a very small infraction.

Imbusytodaysorry · 17/01/2026 15:52

@dialdrunkforyou id say the officer was having a shit day .
This is why you are charged at 37 and over or 27 and over as cars got up and down . I mean who sits at 50/60/70 on the nose the whole journey . Nobody .
Ut would never stand up in court and this is why he never recharged you .
Ignore he was being an arse.

we quite often have mobile speed checks on a new stretch of rd near us
they pull every one over who’s triggered it

and like you a couple of colleagues got a verbal warning but no action because they were just and so over the limit

this is nothing to do with power trips or gender

can’t understand why you seem to be completely in denial that you have done anything wrong irrespective of of how minor

MauriceTheMussel · 17/01/2026 15:49

Absolutely nutjob replies on this thread.

YANBU and your speed at 2mph over is fine

I mean, I think most people agree that they were being a bit OTT.

But 2mph over can see you being prosecuted so it quite clearly isn't fine.

C8H10N4O2 · 17/01/2026 15:54

dialdrunkforyou · 17/01/2026 14:30

I tend to pay attention to the road ahead of me, which is what you’re taught to do.

You are supposed to use your rear view mirror regularly. This was still the case when my DC were tested.

Suck it up, you were lucky not to be ticketed and have to do the speed awareness course/take points.

Except that's not what happens at all 🙄

dialdrunkforyou · 17/01/2026 13:08

oh give over. If I was doing 35 I’d understand but a couple of MPH on a clear road with a slight downhill isn’t speeding.

Was that your attitude with the police 🤣

jacks11 · 17/01/2026 15:54

Oh, give over OP.

you are being ridiculous! Yes, he was a little over zealous but you weren’t given a ticket. And you were speeding, albeit only marginally, so you were breaking the speed limit and the law. Yes, I’m sure the vast majority of us have done similar, it’s probably not even the worst thing you’ll ever do, but it was still breaking the law. In your position, I’d recognise I was in the wrong (technically) and take it on the chin even though it is probably a bit OTT. Being outraged and “shaking”, accusing the police man of being on a power trip and victimising you because you are a woman is just a bit much. It’s like those parents who always have an excuse for the children’s wrongdoings as “just a joke” etc. you were in the wrong (albeit only by a small degree), you got caught, accept the ticking off and m move on.

Being a woman travelling on your own does not exempt you from being stopped for driving infringements.

If that's how you feel then you have answered your own question. Why bother to post?

NellieJean · 17/01/2026 15:55

You’re shaking because you were caught speeding but you aren’t going to be prosecuted?

NewYearSameYou · 17/01/2026 15:56

Everyone on here making snarky comments has done the same at some point: drifted or gone a couple of mph over the speed limit to get past someone when over-taking or trying to avoid what appears to be an erratic driver, going downhill, etc

It would have been overkill to ticket you, OP. but you didn't get a ticket, just a reminder to pay attention to your speed. That's not unreasonable.

roseymoira · 17/01/2026 15:56

Why are Mumsnetters always shaking? And how many years do we have to use Mumsnet before we start shaking?

ThisSparklyHelper · 17/01/2026 15:56

PatThePenguin · 17/01/2026 13:52

Traffic cops tend no to get involved much with catching murderers and rapists.

And if the OP is scared of male police officers, she did a very silly thing by knowingly driving over the speed limit.

Oh what a silly woman, really deserved to be taken down a peg or two 🙄 2mph over the limit as if nobody here has ever done it

ChicJoker · 17/01/2026 15:57

TheLightSideOfTheMoon · 17/01/2026 13:03

The speed limit is there for a reason, not for LOLs.

Oh fuck off.

absolutely ridiculous from the officer. There’s a 10% allowance before they can prosecute leaving room for error on both your speedometer and their own readers. You would not get done by a speed camera for going 33. I do it regularly.

People aren't saying they've never done it. They're just saying that OP should hold her hands up, not strop about like she's not done anything wrong.

I think it probs makes more sense to say "28-32mph" to cover that variance but if you think 35 isn't ok but 32 is, what if the next person argues well 32 is ok so why not 35? or 35 is so what not 38. you see how absolutes solve the argument?

No, there isn't a 10% allowance. And yes, you can get done by speed cameras going 33mph. As has been said on this thread multiple times.

Of course it is speeding. It's a speed limit, not a target.
