My doctor was late to my appointment because he had been at the local country hotel full of asylum seekers...

When was the last time you had a home visit? Is this a way of managing the " problem" by them taking clinics there? Is it a way of hiding this issue? I understood they did not have access to the NHS yet I see massive bags of medicine labelled for this hotel too at the dispensary. We wait about 6-7 weeks for a routine appointment.

Here are two big reasons why the count if asylum seekers skews male:

Men, particularly young men, are vulnerable to forced conscription which can mean being swept up at the point of a machine gun by whichever warlord’s gang sweeps through your village first. Families put their life savings into sending their young men to safety, even with people smugglers.

For both practical and cultural reasons, husbands and fathers often travel first. The plan is that they, who are strongest, will make the dangerous journey. The women and children will join them when they receive asylum, under the Family Reunification Scheme. People arriving in the UK under the FRS are not counted as asylum seekers. Thus many women who come to join their husbands are not counted as asylum seekers.

No one goes to sea on a small rickety boat unless it is safer than staying put, and that goes double for putting a child on one.

You’re wasting your breath. We’ve told them this 100 times already. Unfortunately they won’t reply to any of your facts.

For reasons people have explained ad nauseam it won’t be population percentages.

I know the reason.

The reason is that the people crossing the English channel in boats are not asylum seekers.

I said I wouldn’t respond again, but this is outrageous. The vast, vast majority get asylum. You are lying.

Mumsnet are mad for the poor oppressed asylum seekers.
This is because they live in rich ghettos and never come across any 🤪

I live on the edge of two areas of high refugee concentration, have taught refugee children and volunteered with refugee charities. This is why I’m not anti refugee. I’d bet the majority of those demonising them have never met one.

shuggles · 18/01/2026 19:19

@DuncinToffee, @GalaxyJam Neither of you are getting this.

At the very least, the gender ratio of asylum seekers should reflect the general population. So a slight majority should be women.

Logically, the vast majority of asylum seekers should be women, given that women face greater hardships in times of war and conflict.

If 1 in 5 asylum seekers are women, then that means 4 in 5 asylum seekers are men. So for every 4 men entering the country, only 1 woman enters. That means women are a very small minority of asylum seekers. Do you understand ratios?

We are getting it and are giving you fact based evidence

Still awaiting yours

Sp people are aware and can raise it with their MPs if needed.

Healthcare for asylum seekers should not be at the detriment of everyone else, obviously.

Asylum seekers only make up 0.16% of the population... Hardly detrimental to everyone else.

An analysis of the asylum system - NAO report

We’ve mapped the asylum system to show where delays occur, and set out four requirements for an effective system.

Eh? I know women make up 51% of the population. Why
do you think I don’t? I have no idea what your point is.
1 in 5 asylum seekers in the U.K. is female (or female or a child, depending on your data source). That’s all I said.

38% of asylum seekers are women and children under 18. Which leaves only 62% men. What this doesn't show is the proportion of those men who are single in the sense of being unmarried rather than unaccompanied. What it also doesn't show is that 80% who enter the UK under family reunion visas are female. Once family reunion is taken into account the sex distribution rebalances and may even be a higher proportion female.
Oh, and it also doesn't show that a single asylum application can include multiple people, so if a man makes the application and includes his wife and kids, it is going to skew the figures.

Well it is detrimental if you have a gp who can't organise themselves and allow all their sessions and commitments to clash and overlap.

I’ve never had a doctor’s appointment start on time. It’s nothing to do with asylum seekers.

Because racists trot out the same old disproven nonsense as facts.

  • They’re all men.
  • They all come to the UK and we’re the only country any asylum seeker could possibly want to come to.
  • No other countries take asylum seekers, but they pass through all those countries to get here.
  • They come because they get more benefits here.
  • They get given phones, tablets, teslas, etc
  • They’re housed in 4* hotels with spas and room service.
  • They’re all rapists.
  • They want to convert us to Islam and force us to live under Sharia law.
  • They are all going to steal our jobs, while at the same time not getting jobs and sitting on their arses on benefits*

*when in actual fact they’re not allowed to work, nor claim benefits.

Never a truer word spoken 👏

Do you know what i need to click on to translate it I cant see it Thanks

You'll need to use your browser's translate ability, if it has one. Otherwise, this article is less informative, but seems to explain the basic problems in English (Disclaimer: I don't know what the website is! It's just a random one I found when googling).

Other news articles from The Sun and GB News explain the incidents that took place in more detail and seem to align with the Wikipedia article, but say that the Dutch students were forced to live in the housing complex, which they weren't.

Women and children have died trying to cross the Channel,

Maybe do a bit of research before asking such a silly question.

Sometimes helped by men shoving them.out of the boats so they can get on

I'm guessing he did so because our practice has a high % of elderly patients and covers a semi rural area. There has been various problems with the practice - waiting lists, appointments , issue of meds - and they have recently closed a smaller service they had in the next village. This has been highlighted in local social media.

Can you link to that coverage?

Re forced Ive seen a comment that the choice may have been to live there or be homeless so not forced but also not much power to choose

JenniferBooth · 19/01/2026 14:25

Stek Oost will cease to exist in 2028. The status holders will then be rehoused. The students have to find a new home themselves

When the project opened in 2018, there was actually a waiting list.

You can all come on with your personal attacks and insinuating you are a bigger person but there needs to be a longer term plan than this. What would you all suggest happens to these men in the long term ?

They have their asylum claims assessed, and are then either allowed to work and participate in society, or deported. In the meantime, we treat them as human beings in need of care. If you are unable to cope with this, you should give some thought as to the society you wish to live in

Ppl desperate to be housed are on waiting lists in the UK. Is it not the same in Holland?
