GP mucked up my blood tests

jt1952 · 16/01/2026 17:17

I feel like crying right now.

I saw my GP with a suspicion of an under active thyroid. He agreed with me and said he would book in the following blood tests:

FBC
Liver function
Renal function
Thyroid function
Tests for ferritin etc
Vitamin D
Cholesterol

I have had the blood test and got the results today. He only ordered FBC, renal function, liver function and HBA1C.

For full context I am overweight, I’ve lost 10 stone and I am still losing (intentionally). The GP has messaged to say the blood are all fine and as far as he’s concerned that’s the case closed. I can access my results.

I feel so frustrated that half the tests he promised haven’t been done. Now I need to start the entire process again, wait four weeks to speak to a GP and wait another four for a blood test, wait a week for the results and see if I actually get the tests I need.

AIBU to make a complaint? It really feels like he was trying to pull a fast one with the HBA1C, and blame this on me being pre-diabetic. In actual fact it’s at the bottom of a normal range!

Surely they could book you in for a cancellation (can you be flexible?) given the situation, or in my area we can just go along to the local hospital and take a ticket and wait for phlebotomists to do it. If I got at 8:30am is I’m often 1st or 2nd in the queue. Results on the app in couple of days …

Sadly it would t work with my job. I work at the hospital. They could do them there but they’re “not allowed” 🙄

OP, are you the person who posted a couple of months ago about your knee and how you had issues with your GP then too?

No?

I’ve calmed down slightly after dinner and a bath, I’m just really pissed off with the entire situation and the fact my body doesn’t seem to ever work properly. I’m young, I’m supposed to be in the best shape of my life after losing so much weight and I’m here with a fucked up knee, no energy and to top it all off I’ve just got my bastard fucking period. Grumpy night and because of the wegovy I can’t even comfort eat like I used to. I might just retreat to bed 😒

I had the exact same thing this week, had a blood test, my primary concern is my thyroid and they agreed to test that and they suggested also testing all the others that are also in your list. Got the results yesterday and they’ve tested for everything but the thyroid! I’m quite upset as I have a fear of needles and it takes a lot for me to feel brave enough to have blood tests done. Not to mention the half day’s holiday I had to book off work for it!

Yes ironically I have a fear of needles too. For some reason I’m fine with the needles for my WLI but anything else has me acting like a little kid 🤣

@penguin23sorry that happened though, have they given you any idea of why it did? Really strange!

I’m contacting them on Monday to find out what happened, it’s so frustrating as I never mentioned any of the other things to test, only the thyroid as my symptoms seem to align with hypothyroidism. It’s lucky that I’m not as scared as I used to be with blood tests, I used to pass out while having them, I started giving blood to help with my fear, it was horrendous at first but it did really help me. I could probably just about hype myself up for another test if I have to 🤣

Rachel63 · 16/01/2026 19:54

Whilst you’re waiting for a full blood count, to make you aware that you can get under active thyroid finger prick tests from Amazon (and Boots), they will give you an indication if your levels are consistent with an under active thyroid but not the full picture. They’re only around £5 and easy to use.

Hope you get sorted at the doctors.

I closed my eyes the second I sat down and had to promise her multiple times I wasn’t going to faint! I just don’t want another one so close to this one!

I'm so glad you're feeling a little bit better!

Please know that your intransigent grumpiness has cheered me up no end tonight. I'm actually a little bit inspired by it.

CelticSilver · 16/01/2026 20:01

If this is genuine (I have my doubts) then I think the GP is telling you to stop bothering them because you are a nightmare patient.

I’ve not chased them for my results. Since I’ve been an adult I’ve only ever seen them for an ongoing health issue, and now this. That’s it.

Yep I always close my eyes, I couldn’t bear to see any of it but this time they had all the equipment laid out on the desk when I walked in 😩

Have you tried using emla cream? You can buy patches online and put on an hour before your blood test. Its numbs the skin.

My mum was severely needle phobic following months in hospital after an accident and her veins collapsing. Game changer for her.

Oooh, I’ll take a look! Does this not affect the results?

Hello. Understandably you are stressed about this. I've had a few tests done this year, and there can be two things happening here you might not be aware of. Firstly, some tests can take longer to come back than others. Secondly, if there is a result that they want to discuss with you, then it can get referred to the doctor to review before they release it. As a result, it might be a couple of days before they review it. At which point they will contact you, either through the system or by phone or message.

My point is, they may have done those tests but you just don't know yet.

Absolutely nothng wrong with contacting them to ask, just be aware that could be what has happened. I wish you all the best 😊

Won't affect the results, they clean it off your skin before putting the needle in. It's what they recommend when doing blood tests on children.

No. The cream starts of white, then after 30+mins it goes an opaque, gel colour. It gets wiped/cleaned off, then an alcohol swab is used before taking a blood sample. Emla is used on kids for blood tests and cannulation, but also needle phobic adults. I used it years ago when I had a belly ring and didn't feel a thing.

Did you get the results on the NHS app OP? Thyroid results take a bit longer. I had the same thing in December.

Anyahyacinth · 16/01/2026 20:52

jt1952 · 16/01/2026 19:01

Am I? If the GP knew there’s more to come he wouldn’t say they’re all fine and no need to follow up.

It's possible that this function when results are normal is a delegated function, results are returned digitally it is likely only abnormal results go to a GP for further action.

You've had a standard and reassuring response to the blood tests returned so far.

Actually impressed you had a call, my experience is a text message.

I have access to my medical record so can view the status of tests...this could be something to sort out and your wish for a highly personalised NHS by voting for increased funding where you can

Munchyseeds2 · 16/01/2026 20:53

I had blood tests recently, results appeared on my app and I thought some had been missed.
A few days later I got a call from the surgery and a phone consultation was booked with my GP.
The tests had not been missed, it seems they don't put them on the app if there is an issue.
Give them a call on monday

I am not diabetic or anywhere near but this test was In ny results so I think it's routine

jt1952 · 16/01/2026 18:46

My GP didn’t. A member of their admin team did.

So you haven’t spoken to anyone regarding the test results, you don’t know who has reviewed them, you’ve just had a voicemail and come on here to rage. Frankly, I’m amazed that your GP surgery closes at 5pm!
Really, you need to get a grip, phone the surgery on Monday to point out the error and they will sort you out an urgent phlebotomy appointment. Stop fretting!
