GP mucked up my blood tests

jt1952 · 16/01/2026 17:17

I feel like crying right now.

I saw my GP with a suspicion of an under active thyroid. He agreed with me and said he would book in the following blood tests:

FBC
Liver function
Renal function
Thyroid function
Tests for ferritin etc
Vitamin D
Cholesterol

I have had the blood test and got the results today. He only ordered FBC, renal function, liver function and HBA1C.

For full context I am overweight, I’ve lost 10 stone and I am still losing (intentionally). The GP has messaged to say the blood are all fine and as far as he’s concerned that’s the case closed. I can access my results.

I feel so frustrated that half the tests he promised haven’t been done. Now I need to start the entire process again, wait four weeks to speak to a GP and wait another four for a blood test, wait a week for the results and see if I actually get the tests I need.

AIBU to make a complaint? It really feels like he was trying to pull a fast one with the HBA1C, and blame this on me being pre-diabetic. In actual fact it’s at the bottom of a normal range!

Sounds like an error. Could you email the practice and tell them? Might be you won’t need an appointment and the gp can just do the request form

They said this morning they can’t

i went with fatigue, always cold, hair thinning and low basal body

I’ve had these issues before I started losing weight and the GP agreed that with my family history it’s likely thyroid issues.

I didn’t go to the hospital. I had it done at the GP surgery and it was all from her screen.

Yeah I've never had a form either.

GP adds tests to my notes. Hospital phlebotomy team logs in, prints stickers and adds them to my blood.

I think you need to get polite and forceful op. To the practice manager. It doesn't sound like the receptionists will have any authority over this.

yikesanotherbooboo · 19/01/2026 10:43

The two likely options are mistake or that all the results are not yet back.
Around here vitamin D has only very specific indications for request which you would not fulfill. I agree that having HbA1c tested sounds logical.
Just follow up with your doctor , ideally by econsult or similar if you can otherwise by requesting a phone appointment.

I think that’s going to have to be my next step isn’t it? It’s just such a pain.

I mean yes and no. How long does it take to bash out an email?

Keep it brief and polite. Ask for a response by end of play tomorrow.

Ask for the tests to be scheduled this week. They always have appointments, the duty doc can do the tests.

I just find it really frustrating

It’s not sadly. I’ve asked multiple times because it would be so much easier for me but the surgery stopped doing tests ordered by the hospital (because they would have all their slots filled by the hospital tests) so the hospital started refusing to do tests from GPs. It’s really silly.

This is a funding issue - GPs do not get paid for doing tests ordered by a hospital. Most Trusts do have phlebotomy clinics onsite that can be booked via the booking system if a GP surgery has no appointments available at the surgery.

It’s still really frustrating.

I’ve spoke to the practice manager on my lunch and she said they’re not able to overrule a GP’s clinical decision, so they can’t get the tests ordered or ask them to order them. I have been offered the next closest routine appointment, which is at the start of February! She said that because the GP made the clinical decision that it wasn’t necessary, I need to basically convince them that it is. She said it being in my notes is irrelevant because he can “reconsider” after the fact?

I'd be absolutely livid at this point!

And put the test on a credit card.

Can you book an emergency appt? Make something up to get a same day one?

I’m just going to book the appointment in Feb and roll with it. The icing on the cake is that they’ve messaged me to ask for £95 to send my medical records to my wegovy prescriber! I think not

It feels like a joke at this point. I can’t believe they haven’t ordered them

Check with your wegovey prescriber to ask why they need them. Most just inform the gp surgery you are on them and
that’s that, they can tell most medical conditions from what you are prescribed. I’d question why they are agreeing to send your medical records to a third party without your consent.

It’s a thing you tick on the form, they trust you but do you give consent for them to contact your GP to verify tha you’ve been truthful re all conditions. I consented to them contacting my GP

OK you must have a different system to us. If you don’t have a form, how does the phlebotomist know what to take and how does the lab know what to do with the blood?

The phlebotomist has the notes from the GP on their screen and they label the vials with this information after they have drawn the blood.

Fair enough… where I live the pharmacy will turn you away if you don’t have the form and there’s no computer in the little room where they do it!

ETA: Wait you’re a different person, how do you know what happens in the other PP’s area??
