Constant criticism from Boss

Dinoswearunderpants · 15/01/2026 14:12

After so much negative feedback from my Boss, I paid for a private dyslexic assessment and they confirmed I am dyslexic.

I could write 100 things correctly but as soon as I write one thing wrong, my Boss brings it to my attention.

Today's one, I sent an email to him and his Boss and it had a name in the title spelt incorrectly (think Clark instead of Clarke). Internal document, no one other than Boss/his Boss will see it.

He's belittled me before saying I should know basic English/grammar etc. HR are aware and have supported me and I use things such as read aloud to help.

The title of the document was a classic dyslexic moment of reading something so many times, it looks correct.

Other than these (in my mind) trivial mistakes, I am good at my job and receive good feedback from others.

It's just my boss who seems to have an issue. I'm just at my wits end with it. It genuinely feels like bullying.

I'm in two minds whether to speak with HR again. I am not trying to use my dyslexia as an excuse but equally I feel like there should be some give here.

How long have you been there? How long has your boss been your boss?

Been there nearly three years, same Boss the whole time. Slowly over time I've noticed a shift in his attitude. He isn't good at managing anyone. We're a team of six and he doesn't do any one to ones or training. It's almost as though being a line manger is an inconvenience for him.

I'm just worried I'm being sensitive. I can obviously take feedback/criticism but it just seems like he wouldn't pull other people in the team up about it.

Is this a junior role?

Either way, if he isn’t doing what he’s meant to be doing - that’s reason enough.

How have your reviews with him been over the last 3 years?

Slowly, and I do mean slowly, read the post to which I was responding.

Then come back with your thoughts

HR then.

Great idea if you realty want to be seen as someone who is out to cause issues and is a snowflake
Companies will support mangers 99% of the time
Someone made a mistake
Manager mentioned it
Employee goes to HR
HR dismisses issue
HR thinks employee is someone to be watched
So does boss
Employee will be high on the list in the case of redundancies
Employee scuppers chances of promotion or any discretional bonus
That is what happens in the REAL world

It's not junior but equally I am capable of doing the role. The only issue he has are these typos. Not the actual content of my work.

I am classed as protected under the disability act though. It's not as simple as giving feedback and I am ignoring it. I literally can't help it.

OP If you have dyslexia, which is recognised as a disability, it means your employer needs to provide reasonable adjustments and make an assessment of how they can support you.

You need to make HR aware of your diagnosis for that to happen. They need to know that you are struggling with the current line management.

Your manager needs to be reminded that he is risking a claim for discrimination in the workplace with his current behaviour ...

Keep records in the meantime of everything that is said to you by this person.

Wallabies232 · 15/01/2026 14:57

Is it his delivery or the way he addresses things that is an issue OP? I would expect to point out where people have made typos, but in these circumstances I would try and do it in a sensitive and supportive way - to help them rather than to criticise.

redfishcat · 15/01/2026 15:00

In another thread, someone who was a manager, was asking if it was okay to ask someone with dyslexia to add a sentence to their footer.
The words were something like ‘please forgive any spelling or grammar mistakes as I have dyslexia’.

would this be something you could use?

Thank you. We did have meetings with HR when I was first diagnosed about six months ago but it feels like he's fallen back into bad habits.

I suggested doing that and he said I shouldn't draw attention to it. Almost as though it's such a dirty thing.

In a very similar thread a very months ago, it was suggested that tools such as spellchecker in Word and Gramnarly would be useful.

I would be cautious of boldly claiming you can do your job to a high standard then failing to actually do so.

redfishcat · 15/01/2026 15:15

@DinoswearunderpantsIn would just ignore him, add the footer, and then keep a very clear record of when he is bullying you about something you literally cannot help.
he sounds really incompetent and like an actual dinosaur, to not understand. You need to check his underclothing 😀😀😀

I have asked for Grammerly (they haven't approved it) and use spell checker. The issue often isn't the words spelt incorrectly but actually another work is used instead. Read aloud helps me spot so many mistakes but that wouldn't have been able to spot today's mistake in the title.

Did they decline your request for grammerly?

tartyflette · 15/01/2026 15:54

Meanwhile is there a colleague you could ask to cast an eye over your emails (not always but perhaps from time to time) to check your spelling? I would be happy to do that to help and I'm sure other people would too.
In fact, before I retired I was a journalist in a busy newsroom and it was surprising how often people would call out 'Hey how do you spell occurrence? It looks wrong to me, even on spellcheck.' Or similar.
Any typos are of course my own... but one further tip, triple check any names. They're a minefield.

They haven't updated me in months. Said it's not approved with IT so they need to get an exception.
