My housekeeper is vey religious and it’s causing issues

We live overseas btw for anyone wondering.

So I have a lovely housekeeper who is very…religious.

She tells me off when she sees the children’s toys with horns (dragons, dinosaurs, Yoga Goat) or if she sees any children’s books about magic or witches. My own tarot cards and crystals are tucked into a drawer.

There is somewhat of a language barrier as I think we are having a normal conversation and she says “Jesus is coming soon” out of the blue.

There is also an ongoing battle between the nanny (different religion) and the housekeeper as nanny believes in evil eye etc and has given charms to me and the housekeeper says they are “satan’s work.” Nanny took the children to a Halloween craft workshop and came back with witchy dolls and a pumpkin which housekeeper said we should burn.

They do however both agree that our rescue street cat is sent from God to protect us.

AIBU? Do I double down on the no religion talk or let her go?

People are just pointing out that having domestic staff engaged in some kind of tiresome superstitious feud and the Second Coming and cats isn’t inevitable, like death or taxes. Even diplomats can manage.

And they are equally entitled to post their problems here. This isn’t some left-wing socialist forum where rich people are condemned and vilified.

And?

‘They can manage’ - sure, so too can the vast majority of mumsnet users that post about their issues. Doesn’t mean they can’t or shouldn’t post. Anyone that can’t relate and/or isn’t interested in a topic can scroll right on by.

You sound like you have a fabulous life OP, if I had the funds I'd definitely have a housekeeper, driver and butler. No yougsters anymore so no need for a nanny. From what you have said you work hard and also odd hours and if you can have paid help, why on earth wouldn't you? Can't help with the staff issue though, I'm agnostic and can't really understand the religious fervor some have but it clearly brings them both comfort and angst.

Love how someone with a nanny and a housekeeper is so far fetched for some people that it must be fabricated.

You have completely misunderstood by post. I was not referring to the OP. I was referring to the idea that MN consists of rich people. It doesn’t. I’d have thought my quote would have made that clear.

That was sarcasm.

Mumsnet isn’t the exclusive domain of any one socioeconomic group, and there are plenty of posters with higher than average household incomes on here. They are no less welcome or free to post about the issues in their lives than those in poverty are. It is an entirely appropriate site for the OP to use.

I agree.

The very wealthy posters are few and far between. Plus many of posts on MN are fabricated.

You also said the above.

Do you think that it’s not always possible to tell someone’s financial status from the nature of their problems? Sometimes it is, for example,
in this case. But sometimes problems are universal regardless of your bank balance. So how do would you know MN is full of poor people.

Due to the issues and often the answers to issues.

Due to the amount of time people spend on MN. Rich people have more interesting places to go and things to do.

The health forums are particularly eye opening.

I think there is a disproportionate number of teaching staff on MN.

And due to the number of posters who aspire to be MC.

I don’t think you know too many rich people in real life and have a very skewed idea about wealth.

ChimpanzeeThatMonkeyNews · 17/01/2026 14:42

She wouldn’t come back to my house a second time.
She can piss off with her opinions and moralising.

We obviously know different types of people.
My point is there are as many poor people as wealthy on this forum.
The varying answers are what makes it interesting to me.
Otherwise it would be an echo chamber.

MyTeaParty · 17/01/2026 15:16

I'm all for a bit of superstition and mysticism, but I wouldn't want my cleaner going on about Satan's work etc infront of my kids, especially if they're little and you can't explain things to them.

You literally didn’t say that. You said wealthy posters are few and far between. Now you’re saying there are as many.

GrannyHelen1 · 18/01/2026 13:29

A battle of competing superstitions.... this sounds horrendous. Seriously, none of this should be around your child, who may be distressed and frightened by the nonsense she's hearing and, even worse, end up believing it. Both need to go.
