Bumblebeesssss · 13/01/2026 16:15

Recently started a job 9 til 6. Isn’t this too long day for UK standards?

Previous jobs were 9:30pm to 5:30pm.

Am I been lazy? I

Toddlerteaplease · 13/01/2026 17:18

I work 0700-1930 or 1900-0730. Usually only with 1/2 hour break.

Morepositivemum · 13/01/2026 17:18

Yanbu op, 9 to 5 would be dreamy!!!

Morepositivemum · 13/01/2026 17:20

Toddlerteaplease · Today 17:18
I work tel:0700-1930 0700-1930 or tel:1900-0730 1900-0730. Usually only with 1/2 hour break.

how many days a week is that? I work retail and get a lot of ten and a half/ 11/12 hour shifts but it does sometimes mean it cuts down on other days

ACR7 · 13/01/2026 17:25

I do my contracted 40 hours over 4 days (7-5) Could you condense?

AlastheDaffodils · 13/01/2026 17:27

My contract says 9-5. But I also have a daily meeting at 8:30 which requires half an hour of prep. Finish time varies but normally about six.

This is normal for my industry.

Iloveyoubut · 13/01/2026 17:28

HoseGoblin · 13/01/2026 16:18

Cries in 12 hour shift.

(Prior to this I worked a 9-5 so they're not unheard of, but 9-6 seems to be more the norm)

I assume you don’t work five 12 hour shifts a week though?

BurntBroccoli · 13/01/2026 17:29

Most charities are 35 hour weeks so 7 hour days. Usually an hour for lunch.
Local Government or Civil Service is usually 37.5 hours or 7 hrs 24 mins a day.

Bumblebeesssss · 13/01/2026 16:44

Sounds like this is becoming the standard.

I always thou most companies in the UK standard hours were 35 or 37.5 per week not 40 hours per week. This has bern my experience until now but it seems things are changing and I am being lazy. Adding the commute there is not much family time left during the week.

I guess the UK is going backwards; comparing to Scandinavia countries

In Sweden the standard working week is 40 hours not including breaks

I bet the people that complain about anything longer than Monday to Friday 9-5 being terrible for “work life balance“ are the same people that complain if services/shops aren’t open outside of those hours. Everyone wants to work the perfect hours themselves, but equally they want to go to the GP or hairdresser or dentist at 6pm after work.

Many people working outside of 9-5 do so for convenience. I do night shifts, part time, because it avoids childcare costs.

RecordBreakers · 13/01/2026 17:39

Obviously YANBU to want to work fewer hours.
I quite fancy 10,30 - 1.30 per day myself.

However you presumably are expected to work the hours as stated in your contract, which you would have known about before you started the job.

How long is your lunch break (plus any other breaks which I know some places still have) @Bumblebeesssss ?

WaneyEdge · 13/01/2026 17:44

I’d hate it. We are going backwards. My DF had an office job in the ‘80s was 9-5 with an hour for lunch and a 3pm finish on Fridays. Lots of places did similar.

Seems to be unheard of now. Weird really when you think DF did everything with pen & paper, no screens at all. Technology is supposed to make our lives easier.

I do 3 long days now as that’s what suits me. I’d hate to do a 5 day, 40
hour week now.

Freeme31 · 13/01/2026 17:44

My husband does 40 and on top a compulsory 45 min lunch and 2 hour commute. Your right its not great for family life but it’s a good job and tbh we need the money. Did they need tell you the hours at the interview?

InterestedDad37 · 13/01/2026 17:49

Dolly Parton might release "9 to 6" 🎶😀

That’s not what I was talking about though. If people want to work night shifts good for them. It’s when people moan about other people’s working hours. Plenty of people who are say hairdressers or dentists are quite happy to work 9-5 to get their own nice work life balance. But then people who also like working those hours then moan that they don’t want to take time off work to see those people. And start complaining that these services should open later to accommodate them. People are always moaning that I apparently don’t work late enough or start early enough for them. I should have a worse work life balance purely so they can have an easier life.

I’ve only ever really known 0800-1800!!

I've always known 8am until 6pm, with a 30 minute lunch and a 15 minute tea break

Soashamed60 · 13/01/2026 17:54

Office hours have always varied between 35 & 40 hours per week. I've only ever had one job that was 40 hours a week in all my working life, always managed to get 37.5. My last job was 8-4 with 30 mins lunch. Makes such a difference to work life balance.
Back in the old days I suppose we needed an hour lunch to run personal errands like the bank, post office etc. Now everything is done online we don't need an hour so it seems like such a waste of time. Can't you request a more flexible hours?

cobrakaieaglefang · 13/01/2026 17:57

7-4 or 8-5 for me, 1 hour unpaid lunch. 40 hr week.
My first job in the mid 80s was 37.5 hr week.

Bumblebeesssss · 13/01/2026 18:01

Thanks. I think I will start taking 30min lunch and leave earlier

Ugh, those are shit hours to have to work. Too long a day but becoming more normal. Too many of us work too long hours anyway, there’s generally fuck-all time left for enjoying life.

That’s capitalism, innit? Until workers demand better and en masse refuse to bend to the will of business owners and a greedy capitalist system in general, nothing will change. It’s going to take a revolution to stamp out shit that no longer works for the good of our wellbeing, leisure time and family time.

Well, don’t do that unless you ask first! And get it in writing. That would be disciplinary action where I work.

Bumblebeesssss · 13/01/2026 18:09

jamandcustard · 13/01/2026 16:47

It's very normal nowadays but there's no way I would go back to a job like that.

I work 8-2 at the absolute most. Most days it's 8.30-1.30.

Sounds wonderful. I guess you only get paid part time?

Pricelessadvice · 13/01/2026 18:12

I’m so glad I’m self-employed. I’ve done the 9-5 thing and hated it.
I now generally work 10-3.30pm (some days I start earlier/finish a bit later)

DoveTurtle · 13/01/2026 18:13

I did an 8-6 once. Never again!
